to date I have uploaded approximately 640 YouTube stories that's an estimate because youtube doesn't actually provide any analytics for stories even a year after they were launched but it's roughly in the right ballpark I've been uploading them since October so basically since they launched and I've done around 20 stories a week I think that puts me somewhere in the top 1% maybe top 0.1% of the users of this feature and I think I've never used software from a major software company that has been more infuriating than this so in the second episode of the thanks I hated series I want to talk about why on earth I thought YouTube stories were a good idea to begin with and why they actually aren't at least not the way YouTube has decided to implement them I [Music] have always envied instagramers for having access to stories it is such an easy way to create casual videos without having to edit them for days and it's really engaging it's really easy to have a conversation with your audience in them so when YouTube launched stories I was all-in right away I created a whole new series for it called the Friday checkout I uploaded my first episode on the 18th of October and I thought the feature set of stories was really basic back then I didn't want to complain because this was an early access program so instead I sent them an email with 9 things that I thought had to be fixed for YouTube stories to actually be useful and eight months later and not only have those not being fixed like actually zero of them have been fixed I actually think YouTube stories have gotten worse since so let's take a look at where YouTube stories are today and why they are so frustrating so the first thing that drives me absolutely nuts about YouTube stories is that you never know where they will show up if they will show up at all so let's try to look at two different accounts on two different phones and usually stories from me show up in my home feed today on this account no no YouTube stories for me let's go to my subscription feed and oh look today they are actually my subscription fee so maybe on my other account that will be the same let's take a look I'm in my subscription feed no stories Why Why are they sometimes here sometimes there sometimes in both places sometimes in neither what is the logic behind all of this and then let's take a look at these stories actually I am using an account that is very much subscribed to Toccata and I know for a fact that I have uploaded stories for tagout are just a couple of days ago that I haven't watched on this account yet and they do not show up here what is the logic behind showing these stories sometimes and not on other times and instead I get things like this pornhub intro from Rush 9 6 or whatever whatever which is definitely not a channel that I'm subscribed to and generally not something I'd like to see on YouTube and the reason why this unreliable discovery system is such a pain in the ass is that it is basically the only way anyone will ever find stories like you can't search for them I can't share them the only way you'd actually know that somebody you've subscribed to has uploaded stories unless YouTube shows them for you is that you'd go to their Channel and then you'd navigate all the way manually to the stories tab nobody would do that on their own and by the way there they are the stories that I haven't washed on this YouTube channel yet and by the way even that you can't actually do on other devices so you can't do them on a laptop you can't do them on a TV it's just not available how does that make any sense because of how unreliable YouTube stories are as an actual content platform all you get is primarily what I'd call subscription baiting so just here in a row I have one two three stories that are just simply designed to do one thing to get you to subscribe with some stupid thing so for example who wants to win this iPad in June giveaway and if you do you should click Subscribe you understand that this person does not know which of his subscriptions actually came from YouTube stories right like he couldn't give you the stupid iPad even if you wanted to this is just a 15 second scam to get you to subscribe to a channel that you have literally never interacted with this is what you get with a trash platform like if YouTube doesn't turn stories into a platform where you can reliably super content of course nobody's going to make good content for it and the only thing you're gonna get is this subscription beta crap you know if you think it's bad for you as a consumer just wait until you see what it's like to actually create stories so to demonstrate let's just try to create a new YouTube story I opened the app I tap on create and the feature has crashed sometimes it's just a feature that crashes sometimes the entire AB Force closes it happens about seven out of ten times I tried this with three different phones but I don't think it's related to my actual device and even if I do get to upload something it doesn't mean I've succeeded because about half the time there's some sort of weird glitch there's many kinds for example two days ago YouTube decided to turn my voice into that of a chipmunk there is a video I did not edit that came straight out of the YouTube story's app in case you're wondering and it's just so many more glitches like sometimes it will trim off like half a second from the end of the clip so like a word is cut in half sometimes when I upload two stories in a row it will upload the second one first so the order is wrong and people don't understand what the flow of the sentence is the other day it was actually showing a thumbnail for a story that I have already deleted so when people clicked on it nothing played just skipped on to the next story and they're wondering hey where the hell is the story that I was supposed to see there's just a new glitch but feels like every week and those are just the bugs after a year of working on YouTube stories and promoting the hell out of them there's still no analytics for them I can't monetize them I can't put links into them I can't archive them there's nothing I can do it's it's completely uses the only thing that you can do with YouTube stories are these dumb click here to subscribe and then you might win a fake iPad that's the only thing that they're actually useful for I had such high hopes for this format you know it would have been great to have something like Instagram stories without having to actually move our whole audience to a separate platform but I guess it's just not gonna happen and I'm done giving it more chance so instead of doing the Friday checkout as YouTube stories I've decided to just create a separate new YouTube channel for it it's called the Friday checkout you can find the link to it down in the description and go subscribe to it it'll be a little less interactive than the Friday checkouts where it has YouTube stories but at least you'll be able to actually find them this time around and watch them on whatever device you want and if you are on nebula the Friday checkout should go on nebula as well so also link in the description I hope you enjoyed this new format I hope you subscribe to both channels and I hope I'll see you on Friday on the Friday check out bye [Music]
