I really appreciate Craig listening and responding to the feedback, explaining why it was done that way, etc. From my experience of Software Eng, it can be very frustrating for users when technical decisions are made and users don't have an explanation as to WHY those decisions were made.
This seems like a change for Apple, who would historically not give such an explanation but I appreciate the change.
Bravo Craig.
Interesting point he brings up about rounding the UI and the aesthetic of straight edges being inorganic.
Still need to listen to the full podcast, but I’m surprised Apple’s allowing these kinds of questions. It really does seem like they’re starting to listen more though - interviews with ATP, Gruber, now MKBHD this year.
The ATP guys & Gruber know not to poke too much because of how quick Apple can be to cut off access, so it’s doubly interesting that they allowed MKBHD to ask some tough ones (no calculator/weather on iPad). I guess we’ll see next year if we get another one of these.
Wow, Marques is right — that Mac OS battery icon is horrendous.
Does MKBHD ask him about apple silicon on the podcast? Specifically whether bootcamp/windows will run on these machines? That's like one of the most talked-about concerns on here.
One of the best video MKBHD made. Went in detail on so many issues/ concerns in recent OS updates and loved hearing Apple's point of view. Wish Gruber had questions like these instead of soft ones which had press release like answers.
Wish the whole podcast was on video.
Great and insightful interview. Obviously you always want to hear more about future products and software, but Marques Brownlee did well putting out what’s on everyone’s mind about the new announcements with tact while trying to get what he can! So much respect for that man and what he’s done for the tech world the last few years
The whole video is worth a watch if you’ve got the time. At the end, Marques asks perhaps two of the most burning questions people have about iPad.
Marques: The iPad still doesn’t have a default Weather or Calculator app. Why?
Craig: You know there's some things that we we have not done because, to do it we would want to do something really distinctly great in that space. I think it's obviously easy to create a calculator app, but creating one that feels like “wow!” this is the greatest iPad calculator out there. We want to do it when we can do it really really well. We honestly have just haven't gotten around to doing it great, so that date that day may come. It would be easy enough to scale-up our additional our existing weather app, but we feel like what would a great weather app for iPad be? Like let's do that before we do it. And otherwise, there are great options on the App Store - there are thousands of options on the App Store in fact.
M: This one resonates [with] me because one of my favorite apps, you guys just acquired, is Dark Sky and it’s no longer on Android. So I'm like, this iOS weather app better turn into this amazing thing. I think it may be time for an iPad Weather app. That’s just me.
C: Alright, well it could be could be time for you to go iPhone exclusive, I think. That would be another good move. (laughs)
M: Will there ever be an iPad + Apple Watch experience?
C: I get it, I think there’s an interesting place where Apple Watch can for many people take that kind of “the device that I need to have” [role.] With it having LTE it can be that device that gives you the degree of connectedness on the go and then you got your iPad when you want to get deeper and it's a sensible point. It is not one that we have pursued yet I mean I wouldn't rule it out but I get it. I love using my iPad I love using my Apple Watch so I can understand that.
