video game voice actors the talented voices behind our favorite video game characters who shaped our childhoods in 1980 the game berserk brought voice acting the video games for the first time in history causing audiences to be completely blown away by its realism at the time computer voice compression was extremely expensive estimated to have cost the manufacturer $1,000 per word since then the video game industry has exploded at an unprecedented rate currently raking in over 140 billion dollars a year and the demand for quality video game voice actors is higher than ever before my name is Anthony Padilla and today I'm gonna be sitting down with some of the best video game voice actors in the industry to learn the truth behind their jobs are they living out their childhood dreams voicing the most iconic characters in videogame history or do they feel immense pressure to live up to the unattainable expectations of the most cynical fans are these voice actors hard-working artists focus on crafting iconic voices to shape our culture for generations or are they lazy cloud chasing parents drifting from one gig to the next only motivated by fame and fortune [Music] hey Tara hello hello kg amen thank you so much for coming out teaching me about the wondrous world of video game voice actors man happy - happy to be here what do you consider yourself video game voice actor just voice actor in general I call myself voice actor I call myself a talker you paid to talk I always say I used to get in trouble for talking too much in school so now I've made a career out of it first attention now attention so what is being a video game voice actor consists of a lot of it I want to say a good 60% is still screaming when you're when you're getting stabbed how long have you been a video game voice actor I started around 13 years ago probably did my first game about 20 years ago and I was working on Pokemon what you did you did voice acting for Pokemon yeah what you want to hear the voice yeah what was your voice they only do it to get that reactive how many video games do you think you've provided your voice for 40 40 that's that's a lot of game yeah that's a good number of the number of games probably around 50 I'd say 50 games like you have to understand sometimes we go in and we're called additional voices oh so that's a lot of it like yeah I go in and I'm like the shopkeeper and there's one line yeah totally so that's why we don't know a lot about the game itself what are some games that you think people watching might recognize your voice acting is recently I've been doing a bunch of the Fire Emblem games I play Sonya in hero's and echoes she sounds much more interesting than I do Wow recently we just had a very lovely movie called detective Pikachu huh based off the 3ds game and is provided the voice of detective Pikachu you are detective me too video game yes sir did you do an example of that voice now sure detective Pikachu you know before he was Ryan Reynolds eyes he was kind of this guy you know yes sound like he had six marriages 14 kids yeah could give you tax advice you know yeah yeah yeah yeah what do you do to prepare your voice for a voice recording session I do a lot of this works doing I have no idea before and all it doesn't make me feel real dumb I guess me a little dizzy maybe it's maybe I enjoy that how would your younger self react to knowing that you would grow up and have video game voice acting be part of your career he just be really happy I didn't turn out to be a doctor I think they'd just be shocked that someone paid me to talk and it wasn't some teacher telling you to shut up do you play the video games that you voice I try to listen to all my stuff that come out a little bit even if it's on youtube I definitely play the games that you know I'm I'm your genre interested in I think my voice is pretty annoying will you listen your voice in games and get annoyed by yourself think of my own voice and I hope no one else is but I am what's the most difficult voice acting gig you've ever been a part of there was a game called the sky of five I was a character named red Magnus red Magnus was this voice always for hours on end and that's it he never got quieter than that so after our I think it was 30 something yeah I coughed up a little blood you coughed up blood off the blood in the booth I would not be able to reprise that role if they offered it to me today you would have to decline I would so turn it down yeah the money was great the help loss yeah was noticeable how do you recover from that I didn't talk for like two weeks two weeks just to silence before I can even pretend to scream again it was bad can you teach me some of the basics of video game voice acting there's three things you can do to join the ranks of video game voice eyes right now so the classes are screaming grenade scream the word grenade right that's a basic number two getting lit on fire okay like five six seconds oh yeah okay all right yeah and three falling off a cliff those are basics as are all of those things happen absolutely simple video most video games those three things will happen all right you're you're you're in a room with your soldier friends right the enemies are coming around the corner you Rene get launched and your friends don't see it you scream it goes off with a huge explosion you're not to your feet you you come to you notice the fire has spread to the brain it's crawling up ah oh my goodness I am honored I am honored sir from detective Pikachu you are now officially a video game voice actors welcome welcome what are your deepest and highest pitched voices sound what so it goes anywhere from down here for like soda and fire yeah these were kind of bandits these are you're kind of like a protagonist let's get into a fight guys this is my pro tag voice the young protagonist yeah kind of mature you know yes going on what are consequences I don't know I'd like to jump on the back of a motorcycle with this guy right Kamal wants to know if you're allowed to use your video game voice in public in other media scam cow callers what scam callers what's that all day yeah scam callers to call your phone with someone's skin scamming you and yells you it's more fun than hanging up on them right so your new answer is blowing your life hey hey how's it going you want to tell me what what hold on a second hold on a second hey honey do we need stalks in India immense life a little more spicy you know Joe wants to know what the most outrageous noises that you've ever been asked to make it a game in a game called resident evil I believe that was five I play that game I love that do you recall the screamer zombie yes yeah that was me that was that guy oh this weird chance oh my god that was horrifying I couldn't sleep many nights because of you I scared a whole group of Japanese businessmen who came in from Capcom that day to watch the recordings yeah and they were we were just trying to make up some sort of voice for the Zambian yeah and it was like Oh what about that weird reverse scream and they're like what's the reverse cream and I'm like right and they were like oh if you weren't a video game voice actor what do you think you'd be doing now is there I'd be talking somewhere it'd be just annoying people in another way esports esports esports sports game I yeah I love you sport how do your parents feel about your career voicing video games not good your parents were not proud of not proud of that it took they took a while how do your parents feel now Yao Ming is a very very famous basketball player and my dad is a huge fan uh-huh and the day I scored a commercial Hawking GPS commercials with Yao Ming oh you were in it with Yahoo I was in it with Yao Ming and he was all in so immediately your dad but you know what overnight he was like are you saying you can get me autographed basketballs from y'all man I'm in do you hope to be a video game voice actor until the day you die probably gonna lose a lot of this by the time I'm like sixty your voice is gonna be it's a it's a finite resource right yes it doesn't last you forever it doesn't regenerate at the speed in which it's deteriorated yeah yeah absolutely that's the problem so it's you know as much as I love doing video game work and I love to eat video game work I'm on I'm on a clock yeah I'd like to die in the booth yeah I just wanna I want to be like mid cane it's like a like a react painter a like a like or a death scene so they don't even actually know they were like that was so realistic you hope video games kill you yeah I brought a prince out of a video game character who already exists and I'd like to hear your own personal rendition of how you would this character's voice so maybe I will go and rescue the princess with my what do you think the biggest misconception about video game voice acting is there does seem to be a lot of folks who think we make like a lot of money yeah right yeah that all all that is so not the case yeah we're paid by a per project basis we never get residuals on any of this stuff probably that it's easy I think a lot of people think oh I could do that yeah and I and once they get in the booth they realize that first of all just maintaining your voice is it is hard because you really have to know how to use you know any kind of singing technique you've had or any vocal training you really have to support your breath and do all those things I have a parting gift for you you can grab this at pagoda shop calm now you don't have to interviewer ever that's interviewer shirt man it's yours I'm a shot shot-shot-shot go back all right you got five seconds to shout out promote anything you want directly into camera go check out my Twitter and Instagram feed it's just Tara sans la so you can find me at kg Tang on Twitter and my favorite charity is the child's play charity they get video games for sick kids check them out thank you so much thank you so much yeah I feel like now I fully understand the wondrous world of video game boys yeah cuz you're one of us I have no after spending the day with these talented video game voice actors I've come to realize that these are the true heroes who bring life and emotion to the deep immersion experienced in many video games without them many of our favorite franchises would feel shallow or sterile I know next time I play a video game remember just how much recognition these video game voice actors truly deserve see you later bye guys press a like often it'll be like react to getting punched I was like oh stop it's like ouch and exactly like pendeks you need an appendix massage now yeah yes
