In case you donโ€™t want to watch: he said it was several factors and some of that includes itโ€™s an 80k truck and financial reasons such as he plans on buying a home. Also he doesnโ€™t need a truck.

So what this video emphasizes to me is that I really donโ€™t need a truck and I am not really a truck person. Now that Ford and GM and Rivian are planning on NACS plugs, range becomes less of an issue as well. So I should probably drop my R1T reservation and just wait until I find an EV I really love to replace my Polestar.

This is going to be a common theme with the Cybertruck. Thousands of Tesla fans simply buying an $80k+ truck because Elon made it. 6 months later selling it because they don't need an $80k+ pickup.

This dude bought an R1t before owning a home or having the means to purchase one? Some of these YouTubers really over leverage themselves for a shot at that influencer life.

what's up guys it's Brandon flash today we're here with my 2022 rivian r1t and I'm filming this video because my rivian r1t is sold [Music] if you're new here welcome my name is Brandon flash we're on this channel covering electric vehicles charging electric vehicle Adventures things like that and this is my 2022 rivian r1t I purchased it last September of 2022 we're now in June of 2023 I've put 24 000 miles on the Serbian r1t and now it's time to sell it so let me give you a little bit of background on my experience as well as kind of go over everything I've liked everything I don't like and some concluding thoughts on what my experience with this vehicle has been if you haven't already I'd encourage you to hit the Subscribe button that way you see all my content about my future EVS charging things like that but as far as my EV background I've actually had quite a few EVS I started my EV Journey with a 2013 Chevy Volt Plug-In hybrid then moved to a 2015 Tesla Model S 70D actually went to every state in the lower 48 of the United States with that model S that's kind of what started the YouTube channel I sold that with almost 200 000 miles on it moved to a Volkswagen id4 I put about 17 000 miles on that in just about a year covered that quite extensively on the channel here kind of got tired of the id4 and then before my rivian came in uh my review actually came in earlier than I expected I picked up a 2022 pole star 2 had that for just under two months put about 4 000 miles on it made a lot of videos in that brief period with it and then I picked up my current rivian r1t and now I'm selling it and my next vehicle will be a Tesla I'm not revealing which model or specification quite yet you're going to have to stick around hit the Subscribe button to find out um and I'll go over why I'm selling it in just a moment here but here we have it I have quite a bit of experience with EVS more than most both Tesla and non-tesla and I want you to keep that in mind as I'm going over the things that I like and I dislike about the rivian to start off this video I'd like to go over the specification of my particular rivian r1t so as I mentioned this is a 2022 rivien r1t you can see it's the very nice rivian blue exterior color I might be a bit biased and thinking that it's very nice we have the 20 inch wheels with the all-terrain tires these are a factory option the tires are wearing quite well I'd say probably about 10 000 miles of remaining life I did rotate them once haven't rotated them again you can see the brakes are still looking pretty good um I mean not that you can really tell much and I would hope they're in great shape still at 24 000 miles the whole truck exterior does have paint protection film on it I've gone over that in previous videos but as a result there's effectively nowhere or anything on the exterior of the truck a couple minor Rock chips here and there in the ppf but not into the paint I did add some running boards uh the linked Down Below in the description as a video to my accessories video and that you can see where I went over those I also made a dedicated video going over the installation I do have a window tint on all of the windows not on the roof but the rears I added 80 just to add some heat rejection front windows I believe it's either 30 or 35 percent tint and then the windshield has 80 tint as well back window 80 just to make it better heat rejection coming around again very little wear or anything like that we have the tonneau cover back here there you can see the Bed Extender that I added at this is one of a handful in existence but bed cover does still work there you can see the Bed Extender in action and the tonneau cover like most of them doesn't make the best noises but still fully functional unlike a lot of them seemingly and I think the reason mine still works fine is because I actually use it fairly frequently and I also do fairly frequent touchless car washes so it kind of flushes out any debris or anything that may build up and just come around to the side again no exterior wear or anything like that so why don't we move into the interior also show you the window stickers that you can see the exact options and things like that as well as the MSRP of this truck so here we have it rivian r1t Adventure Edition so this is not a launch edition like some of them are or like Kyle from out of Spec's truck however the adventure Edition and launch edition are effectively the same I just came down to kind of how the option packages were done and the launch editions actually saved a bit of money on Wheels and paint colors and then they have a slightly different badge over there on the edge of the dash mine says adventurous forever and the launch editions say launch edition there so here we have 71 500 for the adventure package we have up charges for the exterior paint color and the wheels and tires so the rivian blue is the most expensive exterior color because I have an adventure Edition early pricing from pre-march 20 March 1st 2022 I actually have ocean Coast interior at no cost uh if you were to order today that's a two thousand dollar option power tonneau cover fifteen hundred dollars uh that was originally part of the adventure package and that was seventy three thousand dollars but then they split it out when they were doing some restructuring of the pricing but it was effectively the same price full-size spare tire 800 so I have that in the tire compartment back there destination fee you can't get around that even if you take Factory delivery because that's actually a federally uh regulated fee because they want it to be the same no matter where you take delivery just for fairness very old uh old school fee structure there and total thought total price just under eighty thousand dollars seventy nine thousand six hundred dollars of course that's before taxes or anything like that but that's the window sticker and the full configuration and here we have the interior so as I mentioned ocean Coast interior holding up really well I did a tour of the condition fairly recently but you can see the driver's seat of course is going to have the most wear but still has essentially nowhere there's a little bit of creasing going on here on the driver's seat bolster even with the running boards to make it easier to step up and in you still do have to sit on this a little bit as you get in so you kind of plop down on this and then scooch over but still very minimal wear given that you sit on it every time you get into the truck essentially here we have the 3D mats uh kagu mats that I'm a huge fan of have a set of these already for my new Tesla so just to give you an idea of how much I like these I also had these on my previous Tesla Model S if you haven't already I did a whole video comparing these mats to the factory uh chilliwitch mats as well as the optional rivian all-weather mats so just in case you haven't seen that and that's also in my accessories video as well let's go to the back seat again looks effectively brand new very little use of the back seat I've maybe had people back here 10 15 times if that don't really have more than two people in the car ever but every once in a while and then here you can see center console of course looks brand new passenger seat again looks brand new a couple minor scuffs here and there but most of those will just wipe right off but door cards are nice soft touch and really holding up well could just use a little bit of a detail but again not the end of the world before we continue a little bit further I do want to show you the mileage on the truck so we go into settings and then about and then we've got the odometer somewhere here there we go 23 939 miles effectively 24 000 miles might just call it 25 000 for sake of this video we'll see here we have my trip that I did not reset when I got the truck uh this total energy is not correct because for one of the updates it actually counted half of the energy that it should have versus uh the correct amount so that's going to be wrong forever essentially but if you just take that number with the efficiency because the efficiency has always been correct uh then you'll get the total energy so we've put about 12 megawatt hours through this battery and we've averaged two miles per kilowatt hour over the 24 000 miles that I've been driving in if you haven't been following previously you might wonder how the heck I managed to put 24 000 miles on my rivian in just about nine months well it's quite simple I live in Charlotte North Carolina but because of the way that rivian was prioritizing deliveries near service centers I actually set my delivery address to a family member's house in Minnesota because they actually have a service center in St Louis Park Minnesota which is just in the Minneapolis St Paul metro so I took delivery there that also had the side benefit of being able to have paint protection film done very conveniently at Tint Pros which is a shop I've been going to for a very long time uh immediately after taking delivery I actually drove it out to Colorado visited Kyle from out of spec uh did some adventuring around Colorado and things like that and then after spending a few days there I actually drove it all the way back to North Carolina that was just about 5 000 miles in the first month so if you haven't I do have a one month Five Thousand Mile Impressions video that I did many many months ago uh this past December between Christmas and New Year's I actually went down to Florida uh so did all the way down to Key West and back and then some driving of course around Florida as well and then I've done quite a bit of regional travel both for work and personal reasons uh between North Carolina South Carolina Virginia and Georgia so over time that just adds up really quickly I also drive a fair amount just around greater Charlotte Area because Charlotte's fairly spread out just for whatever reason I want to drive around but that all adds up so 24 000 miles in nine months it's worth noting I haven't towed with the truck and I also have not really off-roaded it I did do some soft off-roading in Colorado on some dirt like logging kind of access roads but nothing that I would consider even coming close to the capabilities of the truck they were roads that I would have taken in a Tesla without any issues or really any other car maybe with slightly more care than with the truck but they were basically just dirt roads that maybe were a little bit rough I definitely did much worse in my old Tesla Model S 70D when I was in Maine going on roads that I wasn't sure I was going to make it out of but uh I was totally fine so that's just speaking a little bit to my experience of things that I've done with the truck I know many others have pushed a lot harder Kyle is towed all across the country um Zach from Drake everything has off-roaded his like crazy he just posted his one-year review recommend checking that one out as well if you haven't as well as Kyle's video he's put about 30 000 miles on his in about a year so without further Ado let me dive into why I'm selling it as well as my experiences both good and bad conclusions I've come to and my advice to you if you're in the market for a rivian now or in the future one question you might be wondering is well if you like the truck why are you selling it well it comes down to a few different factors it's an expensive truck yes I got it at a very good price uh getting it at the early price and getting about twenty thousand dollars less than what the current pricing would be but it's still an 80 000 truck uh and I plan to buy a house in probably the next 12 to 18 months or so and doing so requires saving money or saving more money anyway as well as improve my debt to income ratio so at the end of the day mostly comes down to financial reasons that I'm selling the rivian and realistically I really don't need a truck some people certainly do need a truck for whatever reason whether they haul things like dirt bikes or a lot of dirty stuff things like that but that's not me uh usually when I'm hauling stuff it's actually things that I want to keep clean and out of the elements so having a four and a half foot truck bed like this does is actually not that useful for me uh most of the time I found that I try to put stuff in the back seat of the virivian rather than the bed because I don't want it to get wet or get hot or get cold or whatever the case may be and for that purpose having an SUV or having a hatchback or car with a good sized trunk is actually a lot more useful to me so most of the time my truck bed goes unused aside from every once while I'm hauling something larger but I think I'm going to find a lot better use of having just a great trunk rather than having a truck bed and if you've noticed some of the vehicles I've had in the past I'm actually not really a truck person I've always been kind of a smaller car person I like the maneuverability kind of sportiness handling things like that and not to say that the rivian is bad at any of those things it's actually really not but it's still a very large vehicle at the end of the day and I just really don't have a need for a vehicle that large and if I can improve my financial situation and get into a vehicle that suits my needs better well I mean I think that's kind of just a no-brainer at the end of the day another factor in selling my rivian is that as more and more rivians are coming on the road it seems that for whatever reason uh they're depreciating more which I find a little bit strange considering that if you were to order one today uh and I think a lot of people are maybe ordering them today it's hard to say for sure you're going to be paying a much higher price than what I paid so in theory even my price or above that should still be the market value I of course have about 25 000 miles on mine so that does impact the value of course but I think it is a bit surprising that rivians seem to be settling in the low 70s some are even creeping into the high 60s which I find quite strange because if you were to order one again you'd have to pay 90 Plus for a similar vehicle but if you look at the r1s market that seems to be still holding in the high 90s some even Crossing into six digits still and that's pretty interesting I think the demand just isn't quite there for for the r1t and a lot of people that would buy one have already bought one whereas the r1s is a lot more broad Market vehicle and people can just buy it for their family versus an r1t is pretty Niche ish Market which also I find a bit strange because if you look out on the roads at least down here in the South there's four drafters everywhere and the roofing r1t is very similar in use case and capabilities to a raptor obviously a bit smaller bed bit smaller cab but as far as being an expensive high power kind of sport truck versus being a function oriented truck they're very similar in that case so I kind of wanted to sell before the market started bottoming out completely I think there is going to be a very high floor on these just given the capabilities of the truck I don't think we're going to see them go below 60s or into the 50s and still until they really start Crossing High high mileage like 50 plus thousand miles and that's mostly just due to kind of being an unknown quantity rather than actually being low risk but a huge battery very capable vehicle below fifty thousand dollars it's going to be quite a while before we dive into the full things that I like and dislike I did want to mention that I've done two reviews on this truck previously so the first one was done at one month five thousand miles and then the second one I did was after six months and 17 000 miles so if you haven't already I'd recommend watching those that kind of builds up to this you can watch it before and then come back to this or you can watch it after doesn't really matter you'll definitely hear some repeating elements between the different reviews but some of the things that I mentioned in previous reviews actually have been addressed uh in this review or I guess since before this review uh if you will but I do have some notes here but we're going to start with things that I do like about the truck and it's a pretty darn long list and overall I love this truck it's by far the best vehicle I've ever had and I would hope so it is the most expensive vehicle I've ever had but I've also driven a lot of very nice vehicles uh expensive and not expensive and this vehicle just checks all the boxes better than pretty much anything else I always like to say when describing this that it's kind of like having three vehicles in one it's basically taking the tech of a Tesla taking the luxury of a Range Rover and it's taking some of the off-road sporty Baja type capabilities of a Ford Raptor and it's putting them all into one vehicle and then you have rivian r1t it's not quite that simple and it doesn't do everything that all three of those Vehicles can do but if you need a way to describe what a rivian r1t is I think that's the best way to put it you can rip it down a Canyon Road you can tow a car trailer or you can just daily drive it and be in comfort and there are very few vehicles that can do that breadth of capability in one single vehicle um and that's just kind of the big conclusion here it's awesome but I do have some specific points I want to hit so the brand image of the vehicle as well as rivian just as a whole is really fantastic I've yet to meet anyone that doesn't think of rivian positively if they know what rivian is which most people don't know what rivian is I'd say the most common question I get when people see the truck is they're first intrigued because they think it's cool they think it's electric usually I do have a sticker on the back window that says 100 electric so that usually dispels some of those questions if they see it but usually the first question is what is it I'll tell them it's a rivian then they'll ask who makes it I'll again answer with rivian and then they're just confused so I usually like to describe rivian as it's kind of like Tesla five years ago when not everyone had heard of them but now everyone knows what Tesla is or if you don't know what a Tesla is at this point you kind of live under a rock but I think rivian's going to get there in about five years and the basis that Riven has built around their brand uh image and just culture as a whole both in the community and at the company itself are overwhelmingly positive everyone I've met that works for rivian has been a true Ambassador for the brand really cares about what they're doing likes what they're doing uh and it's just kind of a good person and same goes for the community of people that own these vehicles are interested in these vehicles they're just not the typical car Enthusiast it's kind of a mix of kind of the REI crowd if you will those that are into outdoorsy thing kind of go to National Parks but then you also have some of the tech people uh similar to Tesla uh I kind of equate it to the early Tesla days when everyone you met was very nice and welcoming and things like that and I hope this stays with rivien as they continue to grow unfortunately as things like this dude tend to go mainstream that's not always the the case but one can help but at least for right now there's a very positive brand image around rivien the trucks the community the company and I think that's something we're supporting RJ as a CEO is doing a great job being very open and transparent all the communication from the company's been very transparent and partially as a result and just the very Stark design of it this truck turns heads everywhere you can pull up to a nice restaurant and it gets looks you can pull up to for example whitewater center here in Charlotte which is kind of a dirt parking lot that it's like the REI crowd basically they've got mountain bike trails they have hiking trails that have uh White Water rapid training facilities of rock climbing all of that stuff they also have a beer garden so lots of fun stuff and you can pull up there and everyone's looking at it which is kind of cool or you can even just drive through downtown and everyone's looking at it asking questions taking pictures and that's not for everyone so I do like to mention that not everyone is interested in that level of attention I'd say if you're looking at a ribbon you should be at least on some level ready for that level of attention or be good at ignoring people the software updates on rivians have been awesome pretty much every month roughly uh I'd say somewhere in the three to five weeks between updates uh rivian's pumping out an update that not only has small improvements of little quality of life but also a whole page-long uh change log that's really listing every single thing they change it could be something as little as fix the bug where liking a song on Spotify caused it to crash that's a totally made up example but it would be something along those lines just to give you complete transparency of the things that they're fixing improving adding in every single software update and not every single software update adds new features necessarily but they're all noticeable improvements in the usability of the truck when I got the truck it was good um but actually the driver plus system they're eight ass Lane keeping and we'll touch on that more in a little bit and the things I don't like was really bad it was super ping-pongy and basically didn't work but now it's actually quite good so that's kind of the most extreme example of things that they've improved with software updates like I mentioned as far as rivian as a brand the Riven r1t and r1s are so much better of vehicles than they really have any right to be as the first product or vehicle that rivian as a company has ever put out it's astonishing what they've accomplished with this it's so well put together there's so much thought into everything down to the camp speaker the flashlight uh the gear tunnel every little thing is so clearly well thought out that you would think this company has been making vehicles for 30 years or a hundred years even I would be impressed with this vehicle if it had a BMW badge on it if it had a GM badge on it if it had a Ford badge on it it could have any of those on it and it would be just as impressive but it's even more impressive coming from a brand new automaker making cars is not easy I've been in the automotive World cars have are immensely complex and to manufacture them at scale and ramp as quickly as rivian has I mean just look at Lucid they're not doing that great of a job at ramping but rivian is so that really shows the leadership they have and that they seemingly know what they're doing or at least they're hiring the right people that know what they're doing another example the pedal calibration so if you've driven an EV before you know that most EVS have some form of one pedal driving which means you can accelerate of course uh but also come to a complete stop just by lifting off on the accelerator pedal and not have to use the brakes to slow down because it uses regenerative braking and the calibration of that on the rivian r1t is excellent uh very few vehicles have this level of pedal calibration especially from a new automaker Lucid did really well on this as well I must say um but Tesla's kind of The Benchmark and I'm super impressed with rivian's nailing that calibration uh we're gonna kind of go rapid fire through the rest of these things that I like they're kind of just um bullet points but I do want to talk on some of the things that I don't like in a bit those are a little bit stronger and require some improvements ventilated seats if you haven't had a vehicle with ventilated seats well you don't know what you're missing going to really miss the ventilated seats in my coming Tesla but I'll make do uh great use of space and storage on the truck I tweeted a picture of all the stuff that I took out of this I'll try and Link that down below but there's just storage everywhere under the rear seats the massive front trunks the gear tunnel I had stuff on top of the spare tire in the bed just awesome use of space uh this one's pretty obvious the truck is crazy fast it does zero to 60 in three seconds maybe a little slower than that on mine in particular with the all-terrain tires but stupid fast it's the fastest truck you can buy 835 horsepower I think like 1100 pound-feet of torque if you haven't been in one you don't really know what you you're missing but crazy fast it's Unique gets tension everywhere already talked about that it has actually pretty excellent range uh if I drive this truck nicely I am fully convinced I could get 300 miles on a charge from 100 all the way down to single digits but I usually plan on about 250 miles starting from 100 on a road trip and I don't drive gingerly I drive typically 80 plus miles per hour on the interstate especially down here in the Southeast if you're not going 80 plus you're getting passed by semis and you're actually a bit of rolling roadblock if you're not going at least 75 plus so to get 250 miles pretty easily even in those conditions is very impressive so no complaints about the range we'll get into charging in a bit because those two do go together powerfront is just awesome uh I didn't really use the front trunk on my previous Tesla and my id4 didn't have one pole Stars was basically useless but the rivian having a power front trunk makes such a difference in the usability of it because you just press the button on the exterior and it opens and same with closing it you don't have to be careful with where you put your hands you don't have to pop it from the touch screen it really is just the little things that make it super useful it's kind of like having a power trunk which is so much more useful my tonneau cover still works as I showed in that exterior tour I don't know if I would have bought my truck without the power tonneau cover realistically so it's a bit disappointing that they discontinued that for right now hopefully they bring it back very soon it's been like six months that they've stopped producing trucks with power tonneau covers I feel bad for those owners that are taking delivery because they're really missing out on a pretty great usability aspect of the truck and something that kind of makes it from more of a basic truck to more of a luxury truck by having that power built-in tunnel uh built-in AC or not AC air compressor so for filling the tires super handy I haven't used it that much but when I have used it it's really been nice to use has a nice long hose that reaches all four positions uh and that way you don't have to dig out like a little 12 volt compressor or battery powered one or whatever it's just always there always ready to go it's automatic it's not the most accurate so be mindful of that have a tire pressure gauge to adjust after you air up uh and I do wish it could air down it doesn't actually reduce tire pressures which is a little silly but anyway still very useful the outlets on the truck so 120 volt power outlets there's one underneath the console here on the back side then there's also two in the bed and there's one in the gear tunnel super useful I actually use it all the time going to miss that on the Tesla might have to get a like jackery or something similar battery um or wire up an inverter which I'm not really looking forward to but I'll make it do uh but super handy you don't realize how often to use Outlets I mean I was washing a car the other day with a pressure washer there wasn't an outlet handy on the exterior of the house and I just powered it for my rivian because I was parked there anyway and that was much easier and it just worked perfectly The Hot Spot built into the truck is super handy uh I'm I have my iPad right here connected to it uh rather than having to connect to the hot spot of my phone uh I use it all the time right now The Hot Spot function and the rivian is unlimited no cost included with the rivian membership uh which it sounds like they're changing the model of originally when they announced that it was supposed to be one flat fee and then you got unlimited access to uh their premium connectivity of sorts which included hotspot streaming but also unlimited charging on Meridian Adventure network but all of those things are currently still free uh Riven also originally promised that it would be free for the first year with any new delivery which makes sense um but we haven't seen any costs any announcements anything like that so right now I just use the hot spot like crazy unlimited data it works great I've streamed on it I've done live streams on YouTube with it uh I use my laptop my iPad my phone all the time again works great and often the cell service even though I have a t on my phone and the hot spot on the truck runs through ATT tends to work better on the truck hotspot because it has an external mounted antenna in the shark fin antenna kind of right up there so very happy to have that and uh wish I would have that in the Tesla and it's really quite silly that Teslas don't have that you would think that they would offer like a premium plus connectivity or something that included hotspot functionality and I would certainly pay I don't know five ten dollars extra a month for that or something opportunity for Tesla but we'll talk about that more once I have my Tesla and we do a review of that um the suspension capability on this truck is just wild and while I don't really fully take advantage of it most days I'm running it in standard height which is kind of the middle um and on the soft suspension it's super capable you can raise it I think like seven inches something like that you can also slam it down uh so you can have it nice and tucked down like a sports car if you want to rip a back road or you can raise it all the way up if you need to go through water there was a flooded Road when I was going to Wilmington North Carolina uh Jack the suspension height all the way up uh drove through it no problem and I think I got quite a few looks from people of what the heck is that and how are they doing that but no issues and super capable glad to have that and not only is it height adjustable but it's also adjustable damping and it has hydraulic cross connection roll control it's basically the same suspension as what a McLaren has that you have hydraulic lines with adjustable compression and rebound instead of sway bars so there's a massive amount of articulation that can happen because it doesn't have sway bars similar to like on a Jeep if you were off-roading you may disconnect the sway bars and newer Jeeps have electronic disconnectable sway bars so very capable suspension I'm a little bit concerned long term with it uh if you were to own one of these for 10 years or 100 plus thousand miles that we'll see how it well it holds up air suspension doesn't exactly have the best reputation for long-term uh operating costs and reliability but hopefully it's built well and modern air suspension is obviously a lot better than for example a 2003 Audi Allroad that every single air suspension on those fails so I guess time will tell hopefully Ravine did it well it seems pretty darn sturdy the hydraulic lines for the roll control are wildly strong looking but that doesn't necessarily indicate a whole lot so we'll see sound system in this truck so mine is a little bit earlier truck it's an 11 000 Vin and it actually has the Meridian sound system I think 19 speakers something like that but recently in the past probably two three months something like that since I think March 2023 Ruben actually switched to doing in-house speakers similar to the Tesla Model of having their own sound system that they developed and from what I've heard I haven't actually heard the system myself it sounds basically the same I've actually heard some reports of it actually sounding better so I'll have to experience it at some point but I don't have any complaints about the sound system I don't think it's necessarily the best on the market um in some ways Tesla sound system has a little bit more character to it if you will uh it seems like the rivian system is lacking a little bit of the very low base somewhere in like the 30 to 80 Hertz would be my guess I'm kind of an audio nerd but not an audio nerd to the level of some so I'll leave that to others to comment on but I think there is some room for improvement but it's still very very good and I don't think anyone's going to complain about it it's just that that doesn't mean that it's perfect but that's kind of the list of all the things that I love about this truck and of course overall I really really like the truck it's awesome the infotainment's super responsive the seats are super comfortable steering wheel is great the ergonomics are excellent um just everything about this truck is pretty fantastic but that's not to say that it doesn't have room for improvement so why don't we dive into things that rivian can improve on or things that I think Ravine should change and I've divided these into two different categories there are items that are kind of inherent to the Truck design or at least the R1 platform uh and then there are also things that I think can be improved with software updates or kind of incremental changes so there are things that the inherent things they can't really be changed with software updates or would require more of an extensive overhaul in production things like that and then there's the software update so we're going to start with the inherent characteristics of the truck and one of those things at the end of the day it is a pickup truck so it's pretty inefficient use of energy as I showed before during that intro walk around I've averaged two miles per kilowatt hour since I've gotten this truck which if you're familiar with Tesla's you know that a model 3 can get about four miles per kilowatt hour so that means that this uses twice as much energy as a model 3 which shouldn't come as that much of a surprise it weighs 7 200 pounds it has a pretty flat front end it can tow 11 000 pounds and it's just a big vehicle so I'm not necessarily complaining about the efficiency but it is a factor I like to joke that gas trucks or gas guys letters as people know but the rivian is kind of an electron guzzler if you will so it's using a lot of energy to do the same driving as something that a Tesla would and that's just how it is but something to be aware of as a result of being an electron guzzler if you will on road trips that can get a bit impactful um when you're charging at home it doesn't really matter as much obviously you will notice it on your electricity bill but depending on your region I think national average for electricity is somewhere in the 10 to 15 cent per kilowatt hour range and I've on DC fast Chargers I've noticed that going from 10 to 70 which I think is a pretty reasonable range on a road trip gives you enough to continue on with a buffer maybe even skip a Electrify America or other stop that's about 86 kilowatt hour and at Electrify America's just flat normal rate pay as you go rate that's 48 cents a kilowatt hour which works out to 41.28 for that charge uh if you were to pay Electrify America's Pass Plus rate so if you pay them four dollars a month you get a discounted rate on your charging that brings that charge session down to 30.96 so you're coming out six dollars ahead even after the four dollars a month so if you fast charge your rivian even once per month on Electrify America it's worth paying that four dollars a month um Pro tip there but even at home that's about a nine dollar charge which that's very reasonable that's nothing to complain about at all uh and that 10 to 70 percent that's probably getting you about 150 maybe 200 miles of range depending on how you drive uh speeds your configuration things like that so it does add up on road trips and it's something to be aware of again it's not a complaint and if you can afford an 80 000 truck that shouldn't be an issue and there's also plenty of opportunities to get free or reduced cost charging whether that's at hotels or at your house or whatever it's really only impactful on road trips um talking about the suspension as I mentioned the suspension is super capable and generally leads to a very good ride but it can be a bit jarring at times it can be a bit crashy kind of and I've heard this from other rivian drivers as well I think partially it's due to the unsprung mass of the tires uh and the wheels they're just very heavy I think the wheel and tire combination for the 20 inch all-terrains is over 60 pounds which is not light and if you're going over a pothole or something like that it's pretty rough of course it depends on the pothole and of course if you're driving a sports car or something like that it's going to be much worse so it's definitely not bad but I think it could be better for something like this or compared to like a Ford Raptor of similar-ish characteristics with that said if you're going down a road and there's kind of undulations in the road or on-ramps things like that it handles those extremely well it's more just a more abrupt type of things in the road that feel a bit rough or crashy at times uh again with the wheel and tire package the tires on this as they've worn they have gotten a little bit loud which is not my favorite um I think if I were to keep this long enough to replace the tires I would probably go with a Nokian one HT or some other uh more all-season type Tire rather than an all-terrain tire that way you'll also get a range in efficiency Improvement but you can still keep the nice 20-inch wheels uh as Kyle mentioned in his review the DC fast charging on this truck it's pretty good it tops out at about 221 kilowatt but the thermal strategy leaves a lot for improvement and Riven has improved this a lot since I've had the truck uh when I first had it actually seemed pretty decent and then as we got into winter it seems like Rivia made some changes it actually got pretty bad it was dipping really aggressively as the battery heated up especially in colder temperatures and then the past few updates it's kind of incrementally improved and it's pretty good I made a video diving into this with both before and after updates with can bus data showing battery temperatures so if you really want to dig into that I do have a video about it um but I think it's kind of just inherent to how the battery architecture is done that I just don't think it can cool it quite effectively enough to really keep up with the massive amount of thermal load that 500 amps going into the battery produces similar to how the battery can overheat with fast charging the motor inverters so it's actually taking the DC power from the battery and converting it to three-phase AC for the motors those can actually overheat when you're doing a ton of regenerative braking or if you're really heavy on acceleration but more commonly you're going to have a longer load profile from regen going down a hill Mountain whatever over many miles than you will from accelerating because you're typically not using that heavy of acceleration for that long periods of time um but they can actually overheat the inverters a bit to the point where you lose a lot of your regen capability and similar to other things moving has really improved this over time with software updates but it's still not perfect um I think in the coming versions they can probably improve that and hopefully on the dual motor cars that's improved I think a lot of this is just stemmed from the Quad motor design and just not having enough cooling capability for four Motors four inverters that's just a lot of heat being generated it's kind of just an inherent design flaw I think but something just worth mentioning kind of along the lines of charging I think rivian picked the wrong charge port location for this truck for two reasons actually the original prototypes of the rivin r1t actually had the charge port on the passenger front side if you look back at some of the original unveiling photos I think it was the LA Auto Show in like 2019 something like that but they had the charge port on the passenger front side and today it's on the driver front corner and I think that's the wrong spot because one it's actually pretty annoying to access your front trunk while you're charging from the driver's seat you either have to go all the way around the charging station or under the cord or over the cord just depending on how it's set up at that particular site uh I mean that's minorly annoying but not the end of the world but there's also the other factor of Tesla superchargers and opening those up and the coming NAX adapter I think the charge port should be on the passenger front side because Teslas have their charge port on the driver rear and having on the passenger front is effectively the exact same as far as charge port location goes for site design and for how you have to pull into a charger so I think they should move it that's obviously not an easy swap but hopefully they can do that at some point it'll probably require a different front bumper or Fender I can't remember exactly which panel it's more part of but definitely some different panel changes so not something that can be done with software that's for sure in some ways the rivian r1t and the r1s inherently feel a little bit like an early Tesla Model S or model X and those of you that have had those cars you kind of know what I mean they overall feel well put together but there's just certain things that you know are not necessarily going to age that well you can't see it here but the center console I'm about to open it you can kind of just tell by the noises it makes that it may not last forever foreign so it actually has two motorized or power latches for the center console which is just a little bit silly um same with things like the doors on the gear tunnel doors so when you open the gear tunnel door it pops open and then on them there's the little flap and that's how you can access either the first aid kit on the passenger side or the air compressor hose on the driver's side and those doors just feel kind of flimsy they only have one little clip that holds it shut and you're standing on it and it's just not the sturdiest I think that should been more of a pronounced latch and there's just kind of other little examples here and there of things that just feel a little chintzy if you will and I think they'll be fine and hopefully the aftermarket will step in for um kind of fixes for those a little bit inherent flaws if you will for easy replacement and not having to do kind of extensive repairs to remediate those things but you can kind of just tell that they did things for how it works today versus how it will necessarily age over time uh I do wish it had 240 volt Outlets so I mentioned in the good things that I love that it has outlets but I think they should add a 240 volt Outlet probably in the bed maybe under the or in the front trunk but I think that'd be really useful for charging other EVS or if you have a camper or something that you're towing being able to power the whole thing with a 1450 or uh tt30 well tt30 is 120 volt but uh just being able to have more power output because you have 140 ish kilowatt hour battery about 125 ish usable and it'd be really nice to be able to use that power and power other things you could even use that for powering your house in the event of a power outage instead of a generator because a lot of people have hookups that they can hook up a generator to their house with a Nema 1450 and if you had a 1450 on your truck or even a 1430 uh or l630 whatever the case may be there's always adapters uh you could then use that to put power back to your house without having to have a vehicle to home set up a inverter on your house things like that that really just add a lot of complexity the gear tunnel shuttle so was a product that rivin announced early on kind of went along with the camp kitchen and that's actually the base that the kitchen would have mounted to never came to the market which I'm a little disappointed by it would have been nice to have that tray that you could just mount in and then be able to move stuff in and out of your gear tunnel a lot more easy a lot easier uh hopefully the aftermarket steps up for that and we see one come out but it's been a year and a half two years something like that since the first trucks came on the road and we still don't have one so that's a little surprising there's mounting points you just need a long you just need some rollers basically or um drawer pulls I'm blanking on the name of there's a name for those uh suspension noises I already kind of touched on that suspension just overall is a little bit noisy uh I think maybe some bushing improvements uh just general nvh room for improvement not the end of the world uh the back seat so you can see behind me it's fixed like that you can't Fold It Down uh the bottom folds towards the driver's seat to access the storage uh I wish it was a little bit more like an F-150 where you could fold the seat back or the seat bottom towards the back so that way you had a little bit more storage space or that you could fold the seat back forward so that way you could put stuff on top of there if you had a dog or something that way they're not on the vegan leather especially with ocean Coast if I have something dirty I may not want to put it onto the seat material but if it's just black carpet on the back side I'd be fine with that you do have the bed of course but sometimes you want something in the vehicle that's maybe not the cleanest but you still don't want it in the bed so weird little balance that's getting kind of nitpicky but I do wish there was a way to fold those forward uh it would also be nice to have some storage back there too um so those are all the things that I can think of that are kind of inherent design not necessarily flaws but room for improvement areas and now we're going to move on to some things that I think Riven can improve with software uh you cannot currently turn on the climate from the mobile app and have it stay on indefinitely on the vehicle itself you can turn on dog mode or I think they call it a pet Comfort mode and that will leave the climate on indefinitely but you can only set it between I believe 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit and sometimes I want to leave the car just like a fridge uh turn it leaving it on low just so that stays really nice and cool and you can't do that you can't have it just stay on low or high or anywhere in between indefinitely from the app or on the vehicle there's not like a keep climate on button there's not a camp mode there is a camp mode but not Tesla Camp mode style that it just leaves the uh stuff on there is Show and Tell mode that you can turn on from the vehicle itself but the downside to show and tell mode is that it leaves your lights on so I wish there was a way to use Show and Tell mode but not have it be visible from the exterior uh and this sounds pretty silly but Tesla lets you do it you can turn on the climate and it will just stay on indefinitely you can heat up a Tesla cabin to 150 degrees with the heat on high or you can cool it all the way down to like 15 degrees in the coolness it's kind of ridiculous and a little unnecessary most of the time but you can't do that on a rivian and sometimes if I'm in a mall I just want to leave the climate on on 62 degrees for an hour and a half and if I want to do that I should be able to do that uh you can turn on the climate to low on the app but does not stay on indefinitely I haven't figured out exactly how long it stays on but it is it turns itself off after somewhere in the 20 minutes to an hour range I haven't watched it that closely to know exactly there are no Adas visualizations so the driver plus screen on the instrument cluster it'll show you Vehicles kind of around you similar to a Tesla but anything behind the side view mirrors is not visualized which is a little silly there's definitely camera sensors so wish they would do that room for improvement there's all the stuff uh you can only use Lane keeping or driver Plus on pre-mapped routes and in the Carolinas and many other regions that is very annoying so while it works on the interstate for me for example if I'm going to Wilmington North Carolina East of here I'm going on I think it's State Highway 74 or soon to be Interstate 74 but it's not a mapped route it's a two-lane each Direction divided highway with sections of speed limits of 70 miles per hour but I can't use driver plus because it's not a mapped route even though that's a perfect candidate for somewhere that I would want to use driver plus uh and in many ways it's better than some of the areas the Riven does let me use driver plus like in construction zones around uh Charlotte on 485 that I probably shouldn't use driver plus but the truck will let me so I wish they would just give us uh Lane keeping and adapter for crews in those areas and similar to what Kyle mentioned they should do it like Ford where where there's mapping you can maybe have a little bit better experience but where there's not mapping you can still use it but in a more basic functionality and rivian just announced that they're actually removing or no longer including driver monitoring cameras in vehicles going forward which I thought was a little strange good transparency that they're telling us that that it basically wasn't meeting their standards for what they were intending with the vehicle um but it leaves a little bit of a question mark around rivian's capabilities around 8s and not to say that Tesla is perfect in any way around that but Riven definitely has some room for improvement as well uh phone key has seemingly gotten worse uh it was not great when I first got the truck it was working really well until probably a month ago I don't know if they're trying to fine-tune that it's more secure and that it only works when you're closer to the truck uh but recently I'm having to pull up my for my phone more often than not to get it to recognize that I'm next to the truck and unlock and it's just getting a little Annoying I could use the key fob but I don't really like carrying key fobs because that's the whole purpose of phonekey uh the top speed I've mentioned this before I think it's too low uh it's currently 112 miles per hour I wish it would do 130 tires are rated for it contrary to what many people will comment all tires on rivians from the factory are age speed rated which is 130 miles per hour so I think the speed limit should be 120 or 130 rather than 112. uh I do realize yes it's a 7 200 pound vehicle so maybe not the best idea but I think it should do it because it's capable of it I mean you shouldn't take most cars to 150 miles an hour but many can do it as I showed during the intro when I showed the mileage test or rivian moved the trip location in the vehicle infotainment so you now have to go into the settings menu and then you have to go to about and then that's where your trips are whereas previously it was just on the vehicle menu uh and it previously on the vehicle menu if you went into nav or went into other functions and then came back to it it would go back to that that page on the vehicle menu so you could see it whenever but now if you close out of or if you go into settings go to your trip View and then go do other stuff in your truck for whatever as you're on a road trip or just using your truck and then you come back it will often default to just the main settings menu and then you'll have to go back again to the about screen it's just kind of cumbersome I don't really know why they moved it I think it was the wrong move and we're still missing since last charge and this drive trips which I think are just very strange emissions because there's no reason we should only have two trips on an electric vehicle the system's more than capable of calculating that there's no reason they can't add those very easily uh vehicle profile so on a rivian you can have your driver profiles that you can save your some of the settings your seat position steering wheel position things like that currently they are still linked to you having shared access to the truck to someone else so you can't just create two profiles for yourself even so like if you have a profile for you by yourself or you with kids or you uh hauling stuff for whatever reason or what I like to do in previous Teslas is have a charging profile that puts the steering wheel all the way in and all the way up and puts the seat a little bit more reclined because that way if I'm pulling out my laptop or I just want to relax while I'm charging then I can just switch that profile and then when I'm ready to hit the road again I switch back to my main profile so right now I can only set my one profile because I've only shared the truck to myself which is I think you could they should just add a functionality that you can add additional profiles without having to share access to the truck in order to do that just a little bit silly there's no reason they can't do that the navigation itself it's not great uh it mostly gets the job done when there's not challenges I hope this improves I haven't gotten the latest update that includes the better route planner Integrations so I haven't had a chance to check that out but I'm hopeful that as a result of that things improve quickly uh Riven has shown that they are more than listen more than listening to their drivers their most reviewing employees it seems drive trucks so they understand these challenges uh they already switched from using Yelp for POI to Google for POI so for the actual like uh information database on where places are but the routing itself I believe is still through mapbox which is okay but definitely a lot of room for improvement I would say so I think that will come hopefully um but that kind of wraps up the things that I don't like about the truck there's things that I think Caribbean should improve and let's move on to some of the questions that I've gotten for from Twitter then we'll talk about service experience and we'll wrap this all up so as I was pulling together the notes for this video I did post on Twitter asking if people have any questions didn't get a ton of responses but I do have a couple questions that I did want to touch on so one was on frunk access compared to the F-150 Lightning so if you're not familiar um I think I showed the front trunk on the rivian but basically the whole Hood lifts up but you still have the grill if you will in place so you have to lift things up and over into the front trunk similar to like a Tesla but on the F-150 Lightning the hood plus the whole Grille assembly comes up and then you have pretty much a flat-ish load floor to put things into your front trunk uh with the F-150 Lightning mega power frunk as they call it uh and whether I prefer the lift up and over or if I prefer the flat entry and I think as someone that's six foot three it doesn't really matter a whole lot to me um they're the reason that the rivian is how it is or at least what I've been told is that the reason it has the front stay in place is for water uh forwarding because the riveting can go through 43 inches of water on the highest suspension whereas the F-150 Lightning I don't think is actually rated for any water 40 maybe some small amount uh but basically it's to allow the water to seal better or the the front trunk to seal better from the water um I think both are fine if you're below six foot it's probably going to be challenging to use the rivian front trunk with bigger items or to lift like a cooler or something up and over uh whereas with the Mega Power Front you can kind of just slide it in but the rivian also does have the adjustable air suspension so you can lower down the whole vehicle and that can help with access as well so no strong preference for me just depends on your needs and your personal build I guess uh rear seat comfort also as I mentioned I don't really have people back there very often but from what I hear it's fine um the seats themselves seem pretty comfortable I've ridden back there I think once or twice briefly there's not the most room behind some of my height at six foot three uh probably wouldn't want to subject someone to that for like a road trip but definitely for around town it's no problem having four I guess five would fit if they're a little bit on the smaller side uh in the rivium but if rear seat is a huge priority for you the F-150 Lightning might be a better choice it's just a bigger overall vehicle um so yeah that's my thought uh vampire drain it used to be worse than it is but I also don't pay that close of attention to it to really care that much uh it does seem to drain the less and the vampire drain if you leave the outlets on is still really bad I can still use multiple percent overnight if you leave the outlets on not the end of the world uh to me so I haven't paid that close of attention and then another question was do I wish I had an r1s I would say kind of uh I mostly got the r1t because I've kind of always wanted a Ford F-150 Raptor but I didn't want the single digit or low teens fuel economy that went along with it so getting the r1t being the pickup was kind of fulfilling uh childhood uh dream if you will of sorts but I think the r1s probably would have been a better choice and I probably would have gone with that if they had the same timeline and if I had actually seen one ahead of time so I had never seen an r1s in person until after I had gotten my r1t uh r1s is also I think 14 inches short or something like that maybe it's 14 inches wheelbase 17 overall anyway it's a bit smaller which I think is actually beneficial uh I wish they had made the five seat version of the r1s rather than the seven seat because I really don't need a seven seater but I really would have liked extra storage of an r1s five-seater in place of those seats similar to how the model y 5 seat has way more storage than the model y7 seat uh uh but yeah I do kind of wish I had an r1s and I think if I were to go back in time and do it over again I probably would have waited longer for the r1s if that had been an option um I I guess I could have changed my reservation it would have been fine um those were the main questions from Twitter but if you guys have questions definitely comment down below uh I'll try to answer as many as I can and if there's repeated questions or questions that need a longer explanation I'll try to pull together a dedicated video for it uh something that I'm sure will come up is my service experience so I've touched on this in my prior reviews uh touched on it most in depth in my six month seventeen thousand mile review and then I also had a dedicated video of my service center experience in Atlanta after I had the puddle rip off the underbody panel and had to bring it all the way down there so check out those two videos if you want to hear about service experience I haven't had any new service experiences since those trucks been awesome I mean there's no oil changes anything like that I think I've filled the washer fluid once so one of the joys of electric vehicles they have very little maintenance and after 20 plus minutes of me talking about the truck hopefully you're still here if you've made it this far I appreciate you um let's kind of wrap this all up biggest question I know people ask is would I buy it again and my answer is absolutely yes as I mentioned previously I would maybe get an r1s instead of an R1 T if I were to do it again um but with the buyer buying my truck I actually made him agree to a write a first refusal of sorts that if he decides to sell it in the future that he offers it to me first to buy back again and I think if that comes up in I don't know one to three years or something I'd probably take him up on it we'll see what the market looks like where my personal situation in life is um but there's a strong chance that this exact truck will be back in my life at some point I really enjoy this truck it's just not the right truck for me right now at this point in my life and I think the future is very bright for rivian they're doing a lot of things very right and I think even this exact truck in one year will be substantially better than it is today just with software updates and the incremental improvements that rivian is making um it's still by far the best vehicle I've ever owned and talking about if you're looking in the market right now for rivian what one should you consider if you're ordering one or if you have a reservation or whatever the case what do I think you should look at and I think the sweet spot that is not available today but is in rivian's roadmap is the dual motor uh standard battery vehicle so I think whether you need an r1s or an r1t that's kind of up to your personal needs but as far as the powertrain goes the standard battery with the lithium-ion phosphate or lfp battery that you can charge to 100 every day and not worry about it at all with the dual motor powertrain that is rivian in-house developed I think that's going to be a sweet spot I think it will likely have very similar range to my quad motor large battery but also be more efficient so addressing one of my kind of principal concerns with the truck I think the thermal performance will be better because it'll be the dual motor and I also think the thermal performance of the battery will be better because it'll be larger mass for Less energy dense so hopefully they re-architect the cooling system as well and I think that's going to be a real winner of a vehicle both in the r1s and the r1t variants the quad motor is it's good uh don't know that I would do it again if I had the option of picking the dual motor with the same timeline because the quad motor it's a bit wonky sometimes uh I'd rather have a dual motor with some sort of limited slip differential which I believe is part of the dual motor Enduro motor system that rivian is developing um I would say for most people going with the r1s versus the r1t is probably the better choice uh I think it's just a lot more practical unless you actually do need a truck uh the R2 platform that's kind of the elephant in the room uh with the NAX announcement from rivian they said that in 2025 with the R2 platform they're actually going to have knacks or the Tesla connector on it and I think that's very compelling especially if they actually hit their target forty thousand dollar range price that they've said for the R2 platform I think there's a strong chance I'll end up with one of those we'll see of course um I think regardless I'll be pre-ordering one as soon as I possibly can because I'm very interested and want to get one as early as possible if I do get one but I think smaller cheaper more efficient Tesla charging Network rivian that's a recipe for a winner in my opinion and I think especially as the software continues to develop these get more efficient Riven builds out their Adventure Network more just all of those things over time will just continue to improve and continue to be even better for drivers and just want to wrap this up with my thoughts on rivian and adopting the next connector so I think it was two weeks ago something like that Rubin announced that they're working with Tesla that R1 platform vehicle so r1t r1s uh the vehicle is currently on the road as well as any going to be delivered they'll be able to have an adapter in Spring of 2024 to be able to use Tesla superchargers and that's super attractive I think there's some unanswered questions around that with the adapter will you be able to do plug and charge on the Tesla Supercharger Network to be determined how that will work to be determined how that will work from a charge port perspective and location because as I mentioned the charge port on the roofing is in the wrong spot for Tesla superchargers I can't imagine Tesla would want people to be blocking stalls I think in general that concern is overblown but it is a concern nonetheless so maybe we'll see an adapter with a cord I don't think that's going to be a thing just given liquid cooling and such and that cord likely getting very hot hopefully we see that it can output the full 500 amps or maybe rivian unlocks that it can do over 500 amp charging at some point but I think that's going to be very interesting likely to increase the resale of R1 vehicles I would think just depending on how well executed that adapter is and how integrated it is how well it works things like that but that's really one of the uh biggest downfalls I'd say of the rivian is that you're reliant on the current CCS infrastructure which at the moment just isn't that good on a nationwide basis uh it's not so much that you'll not be able to get somewhere it's more just that you're fairly likely to be delayed with the current infrastructure with derated stations things like that and it's kind of Amplified on a rivian compared to like a bolt or 94 or something like that because the battery is so large charging at 100 kilowatts instead of your expected 220 kilowatts it makes a big difference in your charging time because you're having to add so much energy to the battery of a rivian to counteract how inefficient it is whereas if you're getting four miles per kilowatt hour in like a bolt obviously Bolt's not the best example because the charge is so slow but if you're charging at 100 or if you're charging at 80 kilowatt for example in an id4 but you're expected to get 150 it might add 5-10 minutes to your charge in Arabian if you're getting 80 kilowatts and you're expecting to get over 200 you're probably doubling your charge time you're going from an expected charge time in the 30 minute range to potentially a charge stop in the 45 50 hour range and that makes a pretty substantial difference in your road trip overall time especially compounded over multiple charging stops but if you have access to the reliable and ubiquitous Tesla Supercharger Network that concern goes away and suddenly the comfort and the efficiency or lack of efficiency and just the great range of the ravian actually those all come together to create a pretty great road tripping vehicle because I love piling the miles on this Ravine it's just if I have to charge that's when it's kind of a roll of the dice and hopefully we see that adapter sooner I'd really like to see it sooner than spring of 2024 I'm a little skeptical that we'll see it sooner than spring of 2024. hopefully they even stick to the spring of 2024 timeline that's what both Ford GM and Rivier are claiming and then NAX native on the vehicles in 2025. so I'm very much I'll believe it when I see it with Tesla kind of person because they've had a lot of timelines that have been optimistic and they've missed them every once in a while they beat their timelines with things like the model y that came out ahead of schedule but time will tell um very curious your guys's thoughts especially if you own a rivian uh on your overall ownership experience how you think the Tesla rivian partnership
