so if you're watching this video you've likely heard of Mako Mako is known as kind of the cheap paint shop for getting your car repainted they also do auto like auto body and collision work but in general Mako has gotten a bit of a bad reputation for being rather cheap maybe having bad paint quality you might see some peeling you might see a whole lot of things that you don't want to but the trade-off is that their paint jobs are extremely affordable compared to most places you're spending half maybe even a third of what you would for a normal paint job so I had my daily driver get repainted by them to kind of put their quality to the test now they have multiple different levels of what kind of paint you can get there's multiple stages of how much you can have them do and as you go up in quality obviously the price goes up as well however what I found interesting is that they actually have a warranty based on whatever package you buy that warranty could be one year four year or five years and this includes all damages to the paint such as orange peeling or anything weird that happens on the paint end and not something that you did to the car this does not include Rock chips this does not include damage from you scraping it against a mailbox this is just if the paint on their end has failed they will fix it for you at any time within that warranty period so these options ranged quite a bit in price the first option was just a base coat of paint that ran for roughly 300 and didn't have any clear coat and only had a one year warranty now my plan is to own this daily driver for about the next four to five years this is a 2014 Subaru BRZ and it was in dark gray metallic originally but when I bought it the biggest flaw with the car is that the front end was immensely chipped up there were chips Nicks scratches all over it to the point where it wasn't even it always almost looked like the car was dirty because of how much damage there was to the front end of this car so I wanted to get it repainted but it being a daily driver and only doing it for kind of aesthetic reasons I figured I'd want to save some money so I figured I would give Mako a try so the other options were for about twelve hundred dollars there was a four year warranty and that was a base coat with multiple clear coats on top of it and then there was a premium package for over two thousand dollars with a five year warranty but I thought that was a little bit excessive there was also another package I believe in the medium for six to seven hundred dollars but that only came with one clear coat and one base coat whereas the one that I selected was ultimately the twelve hundred dollar package which came with two base coats and two clear coats I wanted the card to be protected over the next few years of ownership and I didn't want to risk anything funky happening so I figured I wanted the cheap out to an extent by going to Mako as opposed to a different uh different paint shop but I didn't want to overdo cheaping up because I heard that you get what you pay for so I wanted to put to the test what happens when you actually get a higher quality paint job from Niko so I gave them the car and they said they would have it done in about two or three weeks and I had pretty good expectations I selected a color known as Garnet red I wanted to go with a dark sparkly red but you would see maybe on like a Camaro or a Corvette um and I had picked the color based off of what it looked like in the sun when I was holding like the little Swatch palette in my hand but something kind of funny happened the red ended up being darker than I thought it was which is no fault of theirs um they just gave me the palette and that's the color I chose so I wish I went a little bit wider but the color came out as more of a maroon when there's not sun on it when there is sun on it however it looks absolutely phenomenal it's like a nice deep dark sparkly red but that was to be expected considering that I chose the color while looking at it in the sunlight I didn't consider that when it was dark out the color might come off as maroon and it's also hard to tell what an entire car is going to look like off of a small Swatch but that like I said was no fault of their own so I got the car in there and about two weeks had passed and they hadn't done anything they hadn't started it nothing had happened and I guess they were pretty slammed with uh with paint jobs at this point so I I kind of understood that I was told two to three weeks so I figured I would have it in two to three weeks ultimately I ended up getting the car back after about a little over three weeks but still within the realm of what I had asked for and what I found odd was that they didn't really start it until a few nights before um so that was kind of kind of strange I would rather have them just told me hey well me in four days with the car bring it in two weeks from now as opposed to bring it in now we hold it and it sits on our car in our parking lot for two weeks and then you have to find some kind of alternate transportation and then we'll do it in the last week so that was a little bit disappointing but all in all I got exactly what I was told was going to happen I just wish they had maybe coordinated that a little bit better as far as only having the car when they were actually going to be using it so that I could have had it for my own personal use outside of when they needed it so as far as preparing the car was concerned I needed to strip down a lot of the wax off but I did that myself they didn't ask me to do any of this but I was told this would get you a better result um I also had to take off a carbon fiber spoiler as well as a trunk lid thing that came with the car from Factory so pretty minimal preparation uh but once I handed it to them they took care of the rest now the only other thing that was kind of odd here is that the door jambs were also not able to be painted they could have done it but it would have cost you like a thousand dollars more and when the entire point to the paint job is to get a paint job for twelve hundred dollars to have my door jams painted for an extra thousand is not really worth it so I declined that offer so moving from that when I finally got the car back uh you're probably seeing what it looks like on the screen now but it came out absolutely phenomenal I was really really impressed with it at first glance I thought the car looked absolutely amazing it was a little bit darker than the color I wanted but all in all looked really good the paint was thick it was smooth and there was a lot of clear coat on it so I was pretty happy with the paint job overall this was at least until I looked a little bit closer as I had started to look around the car at the small details I noticed a few things first of which was that my windshield had a big splotch of paint on it immediately I asked them if they could do anything about that because I had just had this windshield replaced because it got a crack in it not even a month before now I live in Florida where windshield Replacements are free but if I start claiming one of my insurance every month they're probably going to get a little bit suspicious about what I'm doing so needless to say they were actually really really kind about it they handled it very well and they cleaned the paint off of the windshield almost instantly after that I looked around a little bit more and I noticed a few more things uh my mirrors had a little bit of paint on them I asked them to scrub some of that off but not all of it came off you're probably seeing that right now but there's still a little bit there so that's just something I have to live with additionally my windshield also when they were sending the car down I guess somebody got a little a little too excited with the uh the Disc Sander they were using because my windshield has sanding marks all down the side of it once again I just got the windshield replacement so I'm just going to have to live with that but once again you get what you pay for so other than those small few things I then went to check the door jambs to see how they turned out as I was concerned about how good the cutoff would be I thought it would maybe be you know not very smooth and it would be easy to tell that it was a different color well as it turns out you literally can't even notice they did a very good job with this um the wine was pretty much dead straight you couldn't really even tell that it was a different color unless you're like looking for it or noticing it because the interior is the same color that the car previously was so I was actually really satisfied with this the door jams were definitely not worth the money for me and I'm glad that I didn't do it but all in all the car turned out really well the front end was completely Immaculate that was probably the thing that I was happiest about because the entire purpose of getting the car repainted was to fix my torn up front end so the front end was completely fixed there was no more ding scratches whatever they filled them all in they did it completely smooth so I'm really really happy with that aside from that the paint color looks good the paint quality seems great and I have a four year warranty on it so if any peeling or anything weird happens over the next four years they'll pretty much repair it free of charge so I'm pretty content with that other than the few small things I believe they also left some tape underneath my headlight so I had to remove myself and then tape on my reverse lights as well that I had to take out from underneath my trunk but once all that was done once I fixed a few initial things the only lasting thing that is kind of irritating is the sanding on the windshield but other than that for twelve hundred dollars I'm actually extremely impressed with what I got out of it so if you're looking to repaint the car and you're not looking to spend a ton if it's your daily driver or you know if it's a budget vehicle for you or whatever or you know money could be tight then I would say definitely try it but don't cheap out all the way like go like you could try Mako as opposed to other paint shops like they they're very good at what they do if you pay them properly if you get the 300 paint job I'm sure the same cannot be expected as you'll probably see pretty much anywhere on the internet but if you go with one of their more middle tier options such as the 700 paint job or what I went with which was the twelve hundred dollar you're still spending significantly less than most people at other paint shops but you're actually getting a really good quality paint job so overall I'm really content with it I'm satisfied with it and if that kind of category fits you and your needs then I would suggest give it a try at bare minimum maybe go stop by one of their shops and look at some of the cars that they're working on that's what I did and I kind of liked what I saw it looked like they had a good amount of cars being painted all of which did not look too bad so I decided to trust them and ultimately it ended up being the right decision despite the small few things all in all I pretty much couldn't be happier with the outcome of it I think people forget and it is easy to forget that Mako is a budget auto shop it's a budget paint shop the idea is not to give you something that's going to be the best paint job ever done the idea is to save you money and still give you an adequate an adequate product and as far as what the purpose that they're trying to achieve is I believe if they fully do that and I think people need to understand that Mako is is not supposed to be a premium auto painter I think they're very good at what they do and if that's what you're looking for if you're looking to get a budget paint job they are fully able to do that keep in mind though that they give you what you give them so if you cheap out all the way all that can be expected of them is exactly what you've paid for which in most cases won't be very good if it's just a base coat of paint with no clear to protect it so I would suggest going one of the manure higher options which would still save you a ton of money compared to pretty much any other paint shop and you really should get a respectable paint job for what you're paying for and I think their warranty program is actually quite nice so other than that that's pretty much my experience with Mako I think I had a pretty good one there were a few small things but all in all I'm really satisfied with how it turned out for me and I thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed this video if you have any questions about my experience in Mako how I got my car painted or anything in the car World in general uh leave them down in the comments below and I will try to reply to you thank you foreign
