I mean, essentially this works the same as practicing any other scale, I think it'll work for any stringed instrument.

I would say yes, myself, with the caveat that we have two approaches - like a guitarist (one finger every fret) and like a mandolinist (one finger every two frets).

I'm going to try it and see if it helps.

This is not exactly the same, but is, in my opinion, a good way to look at the mandolin as different from the guitar, in as much the tuning is in ‘fourths’. This approach, Four Fingered closed Position or FFcP, takes advantage of being able to move not only up and down the neck, but also across with similar patterns. I found it here: http://jazzmando.com/ffcp.shtml. An example of exercises in PDF is here: http://jazzmando.com/FFcP.pdf in C major. If nothing else, I think they are a good warm up.

I have played guitar for 30+ years and only seriously picked up the mandolin about a year ago. Once I stopped trying to look at the mandolin as a ‘mini guitar’, things started to fall into place more.

Scanning the video, but it seems that this is a common scale exercise. Honestly though, I think most mandolinists would be better off getting a scale book and some baroque music than trying the exercises.

It makes since for electric/rock guitarists, since there is a narrower range of music to work with to start, since I think you have to actively avoid genres on the mandolin.
