okay it's happen all of us we're driving down the road we got the AC on fresh air not recirculate and we can smell a burning smell in this case it's an oil burning smell smells like oil so what do you do you put on your gloves and get to work now I've been wearing these gloves long before there's any kind of virus attack cuz I'm lazy and I washed my hands and it actually keeps you from getting caught sand chemicals on your hands so these gloves are real handy let's open the hood see that smells coming from now when you smell oil the number one culprit is a valve cover gasket which then seeps down and gets on the exhaust manifold which is really hot and then it smolders now in this case it's quite obvious cuz when you look closely you can see oil is dripping down getting all over the place and that's what's smoldering but if I learned one thing from my father hello I said when we were fixing flat tires in the old Texaco gas station check the whole tire you find one nail it might be more so you still want to look all around to see if there's any other obvious oil leaks get your bright little flashlight all around and I don't see any I think place else that's getting on anything the rest is pretty bone-dry now the lady who owns this car is a new customer she had taken it to one of these chain discount auto repair shops some young kid was working on it when she got it back it still smelled exactly the same she knew something was up that they didn't do a very good job fixing up they said they put a valve cover gasket in well we're gonna take it apart see if they actually did or if they totally ripped her off or probably even worse they put the gasket on crooked or something and it was leaking even worse so let's take it apart it's a relatively easy job and I just got a few my tools and spikes the case I have to keep running back and forth basically just need two sockets a ratchet and a little extension and the first thing we're gonna do with the 10 millimeter socket is take off the stupid beauty cover just in the way really doesn't serve any other than making it more annoying to repair take the two bolts off get out of the way then we're gonna remove the ignition coils cuz they're in the way it's another 10 millimeter it's four of them one two three or we can take them all out easily I put the screws up here so I don't lose them and if you're the forgetful sorry take a picture of it with your phone then you'll know what your gods wearing you won't screw up putting it back together and we'll just move them out of the way put them over here and how they're all in the way then we gotta take these stupid hoses off just twist this off comes a PCV hose and there's another hose here on this urn we squeeze it a clamp this one's a little stock so we'll probably with a screwdriver that's easy way to get them off now that's out of the way and we just have to move all the bolts that hold into place and handy enough they're all ten millimeters too well just loosen them one at a time there's a whole bunch of them they're all over the place don't forget the ones in the middle and the ones in the back can't even see back there so get the old flashlight out so we don't miss any of them now they're all loose and we'll take them off can remove them one at a time I'll put them in the front here so I remember where I put them want you loosen them they're really to get off my hand just look close make sure we're all gone alright nothing the halls now know we'll pull it off cock we pull it comes off they put a new gasket its supple silicone but they twisted it and had it crooked so it was leaking down now we're not gonna make that mistake so I use this 3m weatherstrip glue when I get the new gasket I'm gonna put all glue on the inside if you notice when I pulled this off it just fell out not being glued in when he put it down it pinched sideways and then leak you glue certain spots push it in and let it dry for about a half an hour then it won't slip and pinch like it did with them yeah what we're waiting for the gasket to come they're delivering it I'm gonna wipe the edge off to get all the oil off it fell through when it was pinched all the way around get it nice and clean while we're waitin we'll see this thing at seventy two thousand three forty a mile which for Toyota rav4 is nothing even though it's 12 years old barely broken in and when we look at the top of the inside of the engine it's an immaculate shape cams are all clean there's no sludge buildup or anything everything's nice and shiny this cars been taken care of in a timing chain tight as can be which is a good thing it was a much better design when they went to timing chains originally a time he bounced it a rubber would break and they were pain in the butt to change these up chains change they already take care of it they can last basically forever since the chains inside the engine the covers off so we see inside its bathed in oil the whole time so it stays lubricated and it can last indefinitely oh we have the gasket what will deal with fog little bits of this weather trim sealer in little parts every once in a while little hair a little middle little layer then a couple dots in the middle there and a little there with that on tight so it doesn't leak dry out then you just get the whole gasket assembly check out which way it goes goes this way and we'll start putting it on and realize this goes in the middle so push that in a little then you just feed the whole thing around dress it in so it snaps you want it in tight that's nice and tight and make sure it's all in its groove the whole way around the previous person didn't do it this fell off when I picked it up cuz it was just in loose when he put it on and twisted this way it can't twist you make sure it's nice and solid in with the 3m weather stripping and the middle too and then let it dry about an hour okay now it's dry you can see and hang it upside down it's not gonna fall off and mess up like the previous guys worth did then we simply place it back in place line up the spots get all the wires out of the way so a little wire stuck over here then we'll start with the big bolts in the middle because you want to tighten it from the middle out we want to do all the middle one so put this one here and there's one in the back and we tighten from the more out we'll do the back metal one get it finger tight in the front middle one finger tight then the inside so we get them finger tight then we do all the other boats working our way out don't want you Snug them all up from the inside out you then get them talking with a ratchet from the inside out so we'll start on the back you'll get it tight the touches then a little snug the same thing here with it so it's snug then we'll do the inside one here the other inside one then we do the outside ones and the other outside one the top one here and then the top one on the other side and on the last two now we know they're nice and tight and we know they didn't bend and twist and leak and like before cuz we had glued parts in so it didn't fall down and overlap we find the holes it's over here somewhere there it is put that back on squeeze that clamp on it goes yeah we'll go over to the other side through the PCV hose ways to coil the ignition coils go back on it get them out of the hole they fell into that one go there and goes here and that one goes there and we touch the four 10 millimeter bolts back in you got a wiggle or line them up nobody else tighten them all up then we got the ratchet out and finish them off the next thing we're gonna check the oil cap to the old one the gaskets pretty much flushed it's worn out here's a new one with a new gasket you can see this gaskets gonna seal better than this one so we're gonna change the cap to know people often don't think about the camp and that dumb gasket can wear out so it's on their neck get it nice and snug and of course you don't know how much I was lost so let's check the oil what's not even on a dipstick so we're gonna have to add some oil so I'll add some oil put in 1/4 stand as we measure it we can see it's on the bottom that means it needs a whole quart so in goes in the other quart so check it again and now it's on the top dot it's full screw the cap back in make sure that gasket doesn't follow any of course you're gonna start it up check for oil leaks voila no more lake all dry so the next time your car starts to smell why not fix it yourself with a little better work it's an easy job to do in many cases and here's some bonus questions and answers Jenny says I got a Volkswagen Passat 2-liter turbo a shop replaced my main computer cuz it wasn't running now it runs but the transmission doesn't shift right what could possibly be wrong Volkswagens are endless money pits as you're finding out yet to buy his expensive new computer for it well everything on Volkswagen is so computer run and I had that same problem happen with a customer years ago they had the computer changed at another shop and it ran ok but it didn't shift right well it turns out that Volkswagen has the computers they're coded and when they're made they're coded either for a standard transmission for an automatic transmission when I hooked up my fancy Volkswagen scan equipment I found out that the ECM that the other shop had put in had been coded for standard transmission but my customer had an automatic transmission so go to a batter mechanic I have them check all they gotta do is plugging in it and they can go through their Volkswagen stuff and they can see what it's coated for and it could very well be that yours is coated for a standard transmission and all it has to do is be recoded for an automatic transmission I've seen it before but that's how Volkswagens are she's you've changed a stupid part on them you got a recode the computer they're just absolute monstrosity when it comes to fixing them which is why I tell people if you have brains don't buy a Volkswagen not any modern ones so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to ring that Bell
