Every since I switched to lexus I get my annual service and I have been pleasantly surprised at how cheap it's been. They basically stick to the required maintenance from my experience and when I knew I needed tires the service associate recommended a good shop where I could get it done for a much better price.
What a lot of people forget is that dealerships don't know the previous history of maintence for the car. So obviously they are going to sell services of that stuff. I took my car to a dealership for wheel bearings and they said I should get an oil change even though I just had done one 1500 miles ago but they didn't know that.
I actually think the Honda dealership, other than forgetting to actually check about the recalls being done, wasn't too bad in this video. The brakes were apparently fairly worn and if you do the rear drums it's legitimately a good idea to do a brake system flush while you're at it since you need to bleed the brakes anyway after swapping out the drums. The prices are the usual dealership high prices but it's CAD and not USD so it's not absolutely crazy. Obviously getting it done at an independent shop would be a lot cheaper but a lot of dealerships also provide perks like loaners and shuttles and whatnot.
The other dealerships seemed to tack on a lot of total nonsense though. I think as long as you go into the dealership fairly educated about what your car actually needs they'll basically never pull this garbage with you. Last time I hit up my VW dealership for their oil change special they were cool about it and just asked to make sure that I had done the rest of the required service myself (which was mostly just visually inspecting a bunch of parts). It's mostly when you go in clueless that the sketchy dealerships will try to rake you over the coals.
Ehhhh. It isn't really possible to over service a car. It is possible to neglect a car and have it become a danger or wear out faster. I feel that most people going into the dealer who fall for the "upsell" probably aren't hurting anything since it's possible that service hasn't been done before.
This is one of the reasons I lease. Maintenance is covered - at least at BMW it is.
This is very common and not only do they suggest way more shit than you need, their prices are outrageously expensive for everything, despite getting the stuff the cheapest. $621 for a brake job that costs maybe $180 in materials and labor for an average pro. They're out for nothing but profit and there's a good reason they're nicknamed "stealerships". I feel bad for all the poor people that are clueless and ripped off every day because they don't know any better. I'm a car guy who has worked in a family owned shop and I've still been jerked around by other shops that think they can pull something over on me, but immediately stop when they find out I know what I'm talking about.
so fix your own car lol...
if you can't trust a dealership or other mechanics, better learn to fix your own car.
Dealerships try to rip you off?! No way!!!!!!
Oh my god I work at that Chrysler Dealership. LMAO this is so bad.
