carbonated beverages are delicious but i was thinking the other day why do we have carbonated food so i decided to do a bit of research and i pretty quickly found that people have carbonated fruit in the past not many people but a few have definitely tried it and it just so happens that it looks really cool so today i've decided to carbonate a bunch of different foods primarily fruits to see how it works but first i need to get my hands on a lot of fruit which won't be difficult and for that i owe a big thanks to walmart plus for sponsoring this video the tricky part will be getting the dry ice there just aren't that many places around me in boston that haven't but i started making all sorts of phone calls there were a shocking number of rejections i literally called every place i could possibly find but all they seemed to have was regular ice i guess not that many people are going out and trying to carbonate their fruits but finally i found this really amazing guy who had plenty and he wasn't even that far away oh you do oh when i asked him why no one else had it he said because they all suck so i picked up the driest just now it is in the back of my car but as i was walking away i heard the guy say put your windows down in a super thick boston accent and i was like why and then he just goes cause he'll die if you don't and now just like that i am back home with the dry ice just from the short car there's already a bunch of frosting on my cooler this is gonna be awesome now that we've finally got our dry ice i want to see what we're working with here this is a classic driest experiment and we have to do it before doing anything else right now i'd always been taught that using warm water was better for getting more smoke out of the dry ice so here we go boom many catholic camps in all seriousness when holding this i feel pretty badass it just feels like i'm invincible now that we know that dry ice works it's time to order our fruit and as i said this part could not be easier oftentimes i head to the market and then lug all sorts of groceries back home but i recently joined walmart plus which gives you free same-day delivery of groceries from your local store and the order process is crazy simple too i go online and select from a number of fresh high quality ingredients for this video i'm picking out all sorts of organic fruits and some veggies too since i'm just really curious to see how well these are going to carbonate i also might add a few drinks to carbonate and potentially a couple of foods too but we'll see now i've ordered it and it's that simple the ingredients will be here in no time and while we wait there are several things i love most about walmart plus and i really hope you'll hear me out here especially given the fact that i order ingredients for delivery several times a week and really don't mess around with this kind of thing first the prices are the same as they are on the shelf meaning there aren't any crazy markups on items the way there are for other delivery services this is simple it means that you'll get high quality fresh food at walmart prices you'll love next and perhaps my favorite of all is the fact that specially trained shoppers hand pick all the freshest items their entire mindset is to shop the way for you that they would for their own family groceries are also picked up right before delivery from your local store meaning that everything is very very fresh and in addition to groceries you can get all sorts of household and family goods yup i even got this toilet paper from walmart plus ah just got the notification my order has arrived these are super heavy so i'm definitely lucky someone tackled the shopping trip for me and it looks like all my fruit and veggies here are fresh perfectly ripe and in season i mean just look at these ripe vine tomatoes or this crisp watermelon so visit walmartplus.com now to start your free trial today and with all of that said it's time to get carbonating we have finally made it it is time to fill up this cooler right here and get going because it's going to take us hours and hours and hours but don't worry i'm going to make it quick for you just quickly go down and toss a like on the video i mean is that not the only thing i ever ask of you think about it this way i'm in here with manny right now breathing in all sorts of co2 just for you minnie you lightheaded first things first i'm going to open up my cooler to begin to pile in my dry ice you know what i think it's going to be a lot easier if i pour it once i've poured in all my dry ice i'm going to move it all to one corner of my cooler in order to carbonate this fruit i want it sitting as far away from the dry ice as possible i'm gonna cover up the dry ice with a few kitchen towels to kind of contain it all to one place and make sure none of the fruit gets stuck to it and then i'm gonna start putting in my fruit and veggies i've heard from a lot of people that grapes are the coolest thing you can make carbonated but i have a weird feeling that oranges are gonna be my favorite so i'm excited to see how that'll play out while i'm putting these in i'll explain the process really quickly the way this works is actually quite simple dry ice is just frozen carbon dioxide so as it sits here it turns into a co2 gas and as we probably all know co2 is what makes carbonated water and the same exact thing applies here and we then seal the entire cooler with plastic wrap which is then going to keep that co2 in there and make everything pressurized thereby pushing that carbon dioxide into the fruit and making carbonated fruit nanny and i also found a really clever way to wrap this cooler up just moments after we finish wrapping this look how much pressure there already is this is already really puffed up over the top of the cooler and just think about how this will be if we leave it for hours my plan is to now leave this one for about six hours or so just to experiment and see where that leaves us with fruit then i'm gonna leave it overnight for 12 hours while i sleep that is when i'm going to try to carbonate an entire watermelon but first it's time to practice my aerial knife skills on all that extra fruit now before anybody gets upset i made sure the floor is nice and clean and i'm going to turn all this extra fruit into juice you've seen my knife skills on the cutting board so i just thought while we wait you might want to see them in the air manny is going to toss me a series of fruits and we're gonna keep a little score counter on whether or not i've done a clean cut or totally butchered it let's go [Music] wow [Music] yeah what are you drinking it's all the fruit from the floor now that we've waited about six hours for this first go-around this thing is very puffy i'm gonna break the tension with my knife and then open it up and now everybody is the moment of truth so here's the thing we can hear a very light slight sizzling here and just like i predicted some of the ingredients that were too close to the dries look frozen already that is a frozen strawberry but the real question is will any of these fruits and veggies be carbonated well there's only one way to find out oh it'll work my entire mouth tastes like grape sugar right now it's crazy hold on pop in like three of these it's crazy it's crazy oh my god this doesn't it it literally tastes like salt in my mouth it foams your entire house right so here's the thing we're on to something that pressure started pushing into those grapes and i wanted to check on this because i've never done it before and i didn't want all of these to freeze and ruin our entire experiment i'm gonna shift the fruits and veggies including of course our good old cucumbers further away from that dry ice to make sure none of them freeze and then perhaps most importantly the entire point of our video we want to carbonate a whole watermelon but we can't do it if it's fully closed so after i make a few cuts around this thing i'll toss the whole watermelon into my cooler along with some more dry ice and then we'll close it down again and wrap the whole thing up and i will see you tomorrow morning it's a new day and it's time to cut this thing open to see if we actually carbonated a watermelon not just any watermelon a perfect summer watermelon we'll slice this open releasing all that pressure and then tear off the plastic wrap once again i am really crossing my fingers for this one if you're listening closely there you can hear that faint sizzling which is a really really great time because it means that we have something very very important here carbonation i really can't help myself here so i'm gonna dive right in on one of these pre-sliced chunks of watermelon oh my god mint you can eat this i swear to god you are not fired okay go ahead you're fine no i'm just kidding go ahead go ahead isn't that crazy it is crazy what do you even think it tastes like this explosion the entire thing is carbonated with tiny little bubbles first things first let's check out this pineapple right here watch as i squeeze it i mean aside from being this gorgeous juicy pineapple the whole thing is sizzling if you listen to it let me show you up close can you hear that so first things first i'm gonna try a slice of pineapple this is so weird pretty much what i think is gonna happen is that if i've ever had any sodas that are a similar flavor to the fruit that i'm eating so let's say orange soda or grape soda or any type of fruit flavored soda that's what this is all gonna taste like it's sort of indescribable because when you eat a piece of watermelon you don't expect there to be all this foam in your mouth after but suddenly that's the case there's all these little tiny sparks and they actually feel like smaller bubbles than you normally get from something like sparkling water but it's fascinating so let's try more next up we have these vine ripened tomatoes while i'd certainly say they feel a little bit more plump than they were before the coolest part about it is this i don't know how easily you can tell but there's tons and tons of little tiny bubbles that have formed at the edges of this tomato right under the skin in fact with this other batch of tomatoes here you can see that they carbonated so much that they actually popped and cracked and if we go inside you can see that all that tomato juice is actually carbonated i wasn't gonna do this but here we go carbonated tomato is a no go one of the coolest things i've seen yet are these kiwis all that moisture and all that carbonation has been pushed to the top here so when i actually go to eat it my whole mouth is tingling manny loves my kiwis i do no and you get that same amazing phenomenon with this orange right here just look at all that carbonated liquid that comes out as i squeeze it this right here tastes exactly like an orange soda my favorite one yet by far because of how cool that was with the carbonation on the other orange i wanna do it again i have to do it again i'll be honest i don't know how well the kiwi is gonna work this is a peach not a kiwi but as you can see the water content in here is nowhere close to what we have in some of the other fruits so right away i can sort of tell by looking that this one doesn't really have much carbonation and i thought that was the case but when i did bite into it you can see all those air bubbles that are left and it was actually a little bit carbonated but again it didn't have that same effect on my tongue and on my palate that these other ones so far did this pepper did get a little bit beat up on the bottom of the cooler but i'm still going to take a bite that is so weird you're used to eating all these foods for instance a pepper and a salad then maybe you'd have some carbonated water after to wash it all down but it just stays so weird like this and it's probably really hard for the camera to see but in all those lines right there on the edge have little tiny tiny bubbles even i can barely see them with my eyes here but again somehow that co2 permeated through that outer membrane of this pepper and has fully carbonated virtually the entire thing next up is a little weird but we got a nice ear of corn what are you laughing about here we go i love rock horn but i don't love rock horn flavored seltzer water this one's not for me either now strawberries probably one that many people were looking forward to interestingly enough carbonating these strawberries kind of wears them down makes them a little bit sadder and soggier but i'm really excited for this one that is really really really good the one interesting thing there about this is the fact that strawberries by themselves aren't all that sweet so if you were to go out and get a strawberry flavored seltzer water this is exactly what i imagined it would taste like no added sugar just that bubbly goodness and that natural flavor of shopping next up we got grapes grapes are the thing that everyone says are the most fun fruit to carbonate man can you hear that okay put your head put your ear up to my mouth oh i'm drooling you know when your mouth has that feeling of foaminess when you eat something that just fizzes up and bones up in your mouth and you can't really talk without that muffled sound coming out that is what it feels like to eat carbonated grapes before we get to our main event the watermelon i want to taste this cucumber given the fact that it's a cute little persian cucumber and as some of you know i'm persian cucumbers are one of my favorite things out there so how could i not want to see it carbonated they're pretty cool what's really cool about the cucumber is that it gives a certain zing and you know what i associate cucumbers with a lot is a nice cucumber yogurt dill sauce which of course has that tartness because of the acidity in the yogurt so having a carbonated cucumber actually gives somewhat of that same effect which i think is really interesting but enough talking about all the smaller fruits and vegetables let's get to the behemoth of the day the watermelon didn't we carbonate a full watermelon we're about to find out now it's time to cut open this watermelon i'm not going to be using a samurai store this time because i want a nice clean cut down the middle of our melon does this right here remind anybody of anything what about the million times have been just like this about to open up a steak to see that moment of truth this right here today is our moment of truth so let's open it up look at all those bubbles right there in fact look all over the entire watermelon as i squeeze this thing a little bit you can see even more bubbles forming i'm not sure how easy it is to see for you but this entire watermelon half just has so many tiny little bubbles which makes me think we've done it i actually think that just by cutting off the ends of this watermelon and leaving it overnight with dry ice really carbonated this entire thing it's time now to cut a nice big hunk of this watermelon perhaps a slice more even than this that's perfect and give it a try you see that giant white cluster right there those are all air bubbles i thought nothing absolutely nothing would beat those grapes or potentially the oranges but this this is the best piece of watermelon i've ever had in my life i take a bite it's like candy i'm not gonna fire maybe the rest of the day it's that good well that was a fun video and i'd call it a huge success to me it's pretty clear now that watermelon is the go-to food if you plan on carbonating any of your food anytime soon before we finish i want to remind you to go down and like and subscribe and i want to give a last big thanks to walmart plus for sponsoring this video and also for all these amazing delicious fruits and veggies this watermelon is calling my name [Music] you
