I made myself the challenge with 3D printing the ultimate starter box set that beats anything The Games Workshop have ever made while also making it as cheap as possible Third Edition box set analyst contents are the reason why I got addicted to plastic crack 20 years ago and unfortunately I missed their limited edition made the order run of the box sets in January so I'm going to use it as the starting point to expand upon for our ultimate 3D printed box set the guys over at Edge monitors have really created something else and to put the icing on the kick they are pre-supported well I'm definitely going to find out if my gloves are any good with the amount of spikes on these figures with the Dark Eldar being agile the models are a bit skinny in some places like the ankles and it has led to some bridges while taking them off the supports even after using the hot water method it doesn't bother me in all honesty it's easy to fix and frankly they are cheap enough to print the black Templar spacemans are the epitome of Third Edition for me they were so easy to paint apart from the white pauldrons over the black Prime models back then there was no YouTuber Reddit to let you know that you should paint gray first and then pin thin coats of white over instead I just painted many many thick detailer raisin coats of streaky white games workshops have somewhat revived the black Temple irons in the last year or so but that also means so has 3D printing there are tons of different options ranging from kickstarters that give you bits for your Marines all the way up to faux Marine sculpts from so many different creators so this is probably going to be the hardest part of this challenge is trying to pick which one I go for these have printed off fantastically and I'm glad that I have access to a 3D printer these models actually look like the ones on the front of the box you won't believe how good these look built but before I show you I'm missing something I forgot there was a loudspeeder in the box and I never really liked the land speeder model I'm going to be very honest with you but I suppose while we're doing the primaris version of the Marines we could possibly look at doing the storm speeder this does insert the Templars I mean I have 10 assault intercessors charging up the field trying to get into close combat high as a flying hovercraft gonna help with that after much deliberation and in honestly a lot of back and forth I decided that I'm gonna print the impulsor instead the Rhino should have really been the vehicle included in the original box set I imported all the Min Hull parts and the repulsors into the Microsoft 3D Builder which for a free product is outstanding unless the program build the tank for me which saves me so much time later on thank you the downside to printing like this I'm also not lowering my layer height down from the default 0.05 millimeters is that the sheer suction force can cause lines to be formed in fact somehow it's managed to create a perfect chevron pattern on the front of the tank which would be handy if this was for the iron Warriors now this doesn't bother me so if this happened to you then all you have to do is get some resin on the brush fill in the gaps and then just cure over it again this is a reminder that in our community of 3D printing we need to stay vigilant and try and stay a step ahead of g-dubs I got the fire for the impulsor literally a day before Games Workshop decided to release a whole range of dmcas and result in a massive bandwidth taking out a load of great models from a lot of great creators it's been said before and I'll say it again if you see something that you like download it there and then because there's no guarantee that it's even going to be there in the next hour one of the great things about the starter box sets is the terrain that it comes with and Third Edition did not disappoint I came across this old Kickstarter for plants and rocks and find a literal Treasure Trove of scatter terrain and base Toppers there are so many options to choose from and I want to stick somewhat with the idea of having tall vegetation on the planet so I chose to print off these alien tentacle pieces using the pre-supported options I didn't want it to be one-dimensional so I printed off these jungle light plants as well to add texture and parts of the plants did fail with the pre-supports but it actually still looks like it was meant to be a part of it so I'll be printing more of these plants in the future but I'll probably support the rest of them myself as I later did Scarlett terrain is something I've never really thought about but doing this project has given me a lot of great inspiration to do more but it has made me realize that I do want an fdm printer to print off like a full table's worth of terrain if that's someone that you would like to see then let me know in the comments below the tank traps were simple enough to find the good thing about scenery and terrain is that there are so many files out there on thingy first and because gdubs don't hold a copyright for tank traps and runes they can't bully the creators to take them down I debated about just printing these directly onto the plate but thought it would just be easier to use some Auto supports and throw some extras in to help the runes were a hard part of this but only because I just couldn't decide from all the options on which one I wanted to print and also which ones would actually fit on the printer terrain is meant to be cheap and Hollow in it will save me some resin money but I'm already saving a small fortune printing this instead of buying the box and I'm only really printing one out for the video so I'll print it solid and use supports just to be safe not too long ago I made a video about 3D printing a small daf Core Creek Army and saved a clean Fortune Dune so but one of the models had these really cool ammo boxes for the big artillery shells and they will be a perfect addition into this already packed 3D printer starter box there's something missing though and I think I know what it is now it's no secret that Games Workshop have an unhealthy love affair with Space Marines and they want us to love them as much as they do they always seem to stack the odds in the Space Marines favor whether it be a brand new Space Marine lieutenant model anytime any other Army gets a small breadcrumb of a model update or even a vehicle in a box set where the enemy is a squishy Dark Eldar I think the dark Elders should get a similar vehicle to really balance out the battlefield and also to make this a great starter box for you to share with your myth in comes the Raider the transport choice for the Dark Eldar and what a fantastic sculpt again from Edge minis this is a great addition to the Army and now we we have a proper starter box set that I would be happy to play with either Army because unlike Cheetos I don't have a bias towards one Army apart from chaos chaos wins every time before I work out the price of all this and if I've even saved any money doing this project I'm gonna need to paint the models because I've got a really big problem with printed models and never painting them and how can I expect to convince people to 3D print our box set whenever they're not even painted I'll not bore you with higher Donuts because honestly it's been shown a million times but let me just tell you one thing oil paints are amazing if I didn't have a 3D printer and instead bought the Third Edition box set it would have cost me upwards of 225 and that's quite frankly for models that really haven't stood the test of time and also made for a really unbalanced beginner game My ultimate Third Edition box set costs 75 and it saves you 150 and you also get great models as well I personally think that my box set gives more options for two players but let me know what you think in the comments below let me know if you like the original Third Edition box set more or if you like my updated 3D printed one this isn't even the biggest savings that I've made 3D printed my own box sets so if you've ever wanted to know how much cheaper you could 3D print boxes for then you need to watch this video next because I 3D printed their limited Run Battle Force box sets and I saved an absolutely shocking amount of money I also want to give a big thanks to my patrons without you guys I wouldn't be able to do these bigger and better projects and your support means the world to me so thanks very much guys
