I actually didn't think I was going to need all these chairs but I should have known better there we go go seat right there now can I flip you over there and can I get you to flip with her and if I get you to flip with her we kind of have guy-girl value and if you slide a little bit closer together you'll see why in just a few seconds excellent I'll probably ask one or two of these folks to come down it's a little bit difficult to manage 1213 people but you there are a number of excellent subjects in this group as I would have predicted high school students tend to be very very good subjects overall these guys appear to be very good visualizer so I've invited them to join me on stage let me explain what I'm doing and why I'm doing it ask a good visualizer to visualize the tips of their fingers is two powerful magnets you tend to get a very dramatic response ask a good visualizer to visualize holding a hundred balloons fill with helium you often get what's called levitation very dramatically observe what happens when you ask good visualizers to begin visualizing other things let's see your first name is Lauren are you hypnotized right now you don't think so do you know this this four five times a week for 30 years I mean it's just deepest secret deepest of deeper deeper more and more relaxed more more relaxed now I couldn't get to you right right so I'm working a first name is Alex would you pick a spot and just look at that red looks like an exit sign up there God keep your eyes on that spot please don't take your eyes off it beautiful now what we're gonna do in the next few minutes what we're gonna do in the next few minutes is just take these guys a little bit deeper if you look they have begun the process of just totally letting go and totally relaxing but quite frankly they're not nearly as relaxed as they can become so in a moment I'm just going to start slowly counting backwards from five down to one with every number I count I want y'all to use your imaginations imagine with every number I count just imagine that you can feel your mind in your body sinking down deeper and deeper melting down loose and Limp relax drifting down deeper and deeper so limp so relaxed so loose that by the time I reach the number one every single muscle from the top of your head to the tips of your toes is totally completely and perfectly relaxed by the time I reach the number one and let's start that process by taking a nice deep breath so breathing deeply fill your lungs with air excellent and as you exhale slowly five start drifting back down even deeper let's the muscles in your legs just go totally limp and loose and relax feel the tension just draining out of your bodies feel loose and limp you're doing beautiful it's taken uh nice deep breath now breathing deeply and four and now drift down II even deeper all the muscles in your arms heavy loose limb relax keep going deeper deeper deeper deeper deeper Oh deeper and more relaxed loosen limb hey nice nothing nice deep breath now breathing deeply and three there it is all the muscles in your face and jaws all the muscles around your neck just limp and loose let that heavy head drop wherever it wants to go there you go deeper and deeper deeper and deeper - deeper and deeper to sleep now drifting down into a very deep sleep your arms limp and loose and heavy relax all the muscles around your eyes all the muscles in your head and scalp just one more number and when we reach that final number I just want to let every single muscle from the top of your head did it tips of your toes just go limp and fall into a very deep sleep take a nice deep breath now breathing deeply there you go and sleep one no way down sleep deeper and deeper sleep loose and limp deeper and deeper and just keep going deeper with every breath you take until I ask you to awaken let me do my best to explain what it is you are seeing I scan the audience did a few little tests looking for good visualizers people that apparently have practiced this somewhere long before they came into this auditorium these people if you interview them afterwards somewhere along their lives have been practicing some form of visualization self-hypnosis just not calling it that so I've identified good subjects ask a good visualizer to visualize holding 100 balloons fill with helium and you get a very dramatic response ask the same people to visualize every muscle in their body from the top of their head to the tips of their toes completely loose limping relax this is what you get you get a relaxation that is pretty that you know almost unnatural these folks are pretty much as relaxed as your human being can be and still be breathing there is zero tension in these people's bodies every single muscle you may recall one of the three promises I made was whoever came up here to do this at the end is likely to be very very relaxed it's because it is profound relaxation most people usually don't experience relaxation this profound normally and so afterwards the report I feel really really good and it has to do again with what they are currently visualizing if they see their body completely loose and let me relax that transmits into completely loose limp and relax what's the opposite of that stiff and rigid right does it make sense if we simply altered the picture saw something else in their mind you would expect to get a different response would you not okay the opposite of loose limp and relaxed one would imagine might be stiff and rigid so let's see what happens I extend your arm stiff like a bar of Steel's extend your arm rigid as I extend your I'm feeling I'm becoming stiff and rigid like a bar of steel welded to your shoulders stiff and rigid concentrate stiff and rigid rigid and stiff like a bar still stiff and rigid concentrate stiff rigid like a barbed steel feel that I'm locking into place stiff and rigid stiff and rigid rigid and stiff like a bar still concentrate stiff rigid like a steel bar rigid and stiff concentrate stiff and rigid feel that I'm locking into place welded stiff and rigid like a bar of steel concentrate stiff and rigid like a steel bar I think I missed number one you'll discover you can't lower or Bend that arm by the time I reach number one that arms like a bar of steel welded to your shoulder feel this happening three if more rigid so stiff and rigid one even as you try to lower the arm you'll discover it won't go down and I want you to try in fact that once you feel it's important you'll discover it won't go down till I clap my hands but I really want you to try even as I press on the arm it remains stiff and rigid rigid and stiff you're not trying too hard enough stiff and rigid feels important rigid and stiff stiff and rigid like a steel bar welded to your shoulder come on he's just not trying hard enough I want you to really really try the harder you try the more stiff and rigid the harder you try the more stiff and rigid the all we call the bell curve I said about two percent very very very good hypnotic subjects we have a name for them in the business we call them flappers for an obvious reason some folks are able to so totally let go so totally relaxed so totally focus that they literally slide right out a chair and end up on the floor that represents about two percent of population give these folks a round of applause they are amazing are they not deeper and deeper now more and more relaxed loose and Limp loose and let loose and let loose limp all the way down deeper and deeper more and more relaxed more more relaxed want you to use your incredible imagination is now because in a moment I'm going to start counting backwards from five to one as I count backwards I want to imagine that we're being transported to the top of a mountain by the time I reach number one we are going to the top of a very tall mountain visualize that in your mind by the time I reach number one five four three two one top of a mountain and you didn't bring your jacket you didn't bring your jacket it's freezing up here man is it cold up here it's totally freezing absolutely freezing shivering cold shivering freezing cold so grab somebody next to you keep your eyes closed but grab somebody next to you now hold on to somebody really tight grab somebody next to you hold on grab grab somebody grab somebody hold wrap your arms around somebody somewhere grab real tight real tight real tight freezing shivering shivering cold it just keeps getting colder and colder in a moment when I stamp my foot it's going to go below zero below zero below zero hold on now it just keeps getting colder and colder more and more freezing now freeze and you have a picture this this is the blackmail picture but let me explain what's happening at this point sleep all the way down 5 4 3 2 what most physicians will tell you for a more relaxed loosing a deeper deeper deeper more more relaxed deeper more like solution efficient sleep sleep sick sick sick sick we will I don't know what to make it it's mess most physicians will tell you that you cannot increase our decrease a person's external their extremities through the use of visualization but you can easily do it with visualization were you able to actually measure their skin temperature right now you would see that most of these folks their skin temperature has decreased anywhere from three to five degrees the blood is responding just as if they were out in the cold it would retreat to the center of the body and to protect the brain the extremities the fingertips would would literally get colder and you're not supposed to be able to do that you're not supposed to have that kind of conscious control want to see the opposite of that I'm gonna count back from five to one when I reach number one we're going out to a beach on a beautiful sunny day keep your eyes closed because the Sun is very bright you don't with that Sun to burn your eyes but it's a very very bright day you're sitting out on the beach chair by the time I reach number one five four three two one sitting on the beach chair now sit up sit back keep your eyes closed and just enjoy it it's beautiful out here it's a hot beautiful summer sunny humid day and the temperature is getting hotter and hotter more and more uncomfortable now hot humid sticky try to cool off fan your face fan your face fan your face fan your face pin your face just keeps getting hotter and hotter fan your face hotter and hotter more and more uncomfortable fan your face hot hot hot hot faster faster fan your face faster faster faster faster here here's some lotion rub this lotion all over your body it will keep you keep you nice and cool rub this on this will cool nice and cool this lotion will keep it cool rub it all over your body rub this lotion all over your body those shouldn't keep you cool rub this lotion all over your body there you go rub it all over your body all over your face all of your arms all of your legs rub this lotion there you go rub the lotion and get it in your legs and your feet rub it down around your ankles there you go rub it all in there rub it all in there now nice and hey there must've been something that lotion honey or aloe or something is attracting those gnats swarms of gnats swarms of naps now swarming around your face get rid of them get rid of the gnats get rid the gnat to give her that oh they're all over the place they're everywhere get rid of them get rid of them you did it you did great you got rid of them you got rid of them now sleep deep asleep five four three twenty big news five four three two and mom deviously deepa ctv ctv ctv deepa see these folks a round of applause these folks are excellent can he get this one only the person showed I'm touching eyes wide open went to people I said I'm shaking chair eyes wide open said yeah how you doing are you hypnotized sleep games it Houston stuck like glue to see the chair deep asleep over in five four three two one you're back stuck to the chair there you look just like glue excellent round of applause for these guys these guys are actually they're excellent all right any questions about anything you've seen so far note the following everything I'm doing is matching a picture with inaction see your arms stiff and rigid like a bar of steel imagine you're freezing as if you were out on the top of a mountain everything as a picture connected to it transmitting that picture into action this is how self hypnosis works see yourself standing there graduating with honors picture yourself as a physician as a doctor as a mathematician as a teacher whatever it is you're looking for have a clear vivid picture of it and you can often transmit that into everyday action any questions about anything you're seeing don't be shy you guys are the honors students right yes ma'am it's been demonstrated time and again and if a person knows how to fake it they can easily fool even the most skilled hypnotist there's not that much to it if they know how to do it most people don't know how to do it so you kind of you know here's what I look for I look for absence of motion this is being videotaped if you fast forwarded this videotape what you can see these people will lie like that sometimes for four or five to six minutes without making a single motion try to do that most of you right now are in motion some party use movement you're tapping your foot you're scratching your head you're moving around you're fiddling I can see in the audience these people don't move at all in fact they start breathing in unison after about two or three minutes so if I were looking for someone who is faking I'd be looking for extraneous motion most people can't do that the other thing you see is an ironed out facial expression just this total body relaxation to be able to do this to most people most people can't do that you lift up their arm and there's still tension they push it down do it with a hypnotic subject it drops like but if they knew how to fake it they could easily fake it the most skilled hypnotist can be fooled typically because they can't do anything in hypnosis they can't do out of it but assuming they don't know how to fool the hypnotist that's what I'd be looking for any other questions better yes yes no this this this they will be longer get get a hunch get a hundred people and you'll get a hundred individual responses and please keep in mind for demonstration purposes I'm whipping along I mean I'm doing suggestion bang bang bang bang one of the reasons I try to get them much better than average subjects is so that I can do these really dramatic here's $100 if I wait 200 hours in front of most you twenty minutes into a presentation you'd be grabbing the money so I am deliberately going for the better-than-average subjects for demonstration purposes and you will often get all kinds of individual differences really doesn't mean anything any other questions before I move on anything at all all right deeper and deeper see five four three two one sleep all the way down deep in diva sleep the count of five now eyes when if that didn't work out very well so maybe you're not properly motivated here's what you give you twenty bucks we can stay hot why wait wait bagel I'll give you 20 bucks we can stay awake for ten seconds but here's the deal you're gonna be looking at that spot you got a nod your head you to show the 10-second clock is starting and if you can stay awake for ten seconds I'll give you $20 bill-- fair enough take as long as you need whatever it is you have to do just give me that nod when you're ready beautiful sleep way to go guys what kind of five one three five so why do you not think you're hypnotized just out of curiosity because you can see everybody you can see everybody sleep way 95 we think kind of fiving open your eyes everybody's naked everybody's naked kind of 500 you want young lady clearly an extremely good subject obviously deeply hypnotized does not think she's hypnotized because she hears everything that's going on I used to have a plaque in my office it had a guy levitating above the doctors desk and it was a caption that said I don't think I'm hypnotized I can hear every word you're saying it's a very very common experience for people who are hypnotized to not think they are there and there's a lesson there if you go home and decide it you want to try to do this to improve yourself or to learn some focus learn some attention exercises don't go home and visualize your goals and think you're going to feel it happening most people it's working even though they don't think it's working and mostly up here I'm going to assume do not think your massage is that a fair statement well Joe let me just second sit back in those chairs perfect take a deep breath breathing deeply beautiful to play ninety five for 350 percent boost deep normal all the way five the sale with confidence and and I really don't when they have this little battle going on in their mind human beings have to rationalize what they are experiencing here's a statement I've been making for years I have to believe it humans are much more rationalizing than they are rational most of us are not rational we don't make rational decisions but we have to rationalize our experience an example would be have any of you ever had laughing gas nitrous oxide and dentist's office if given enough you will start laughing what's interesting about it is you'll always find something to laugh about something that wasn't funny five minutes before won't be funny five minutes after the gas wears off if you're laughing you have to attach that you have to rationalize that some people we report afterwards you know I was laughing at this fly flying around the room the stupidest thing I ever saw it's not funny now but boy was it funny when I was taking that laughing gas he has to rationalize his experience I feel like I could stop doing it but I still do it anyhow and that the strangest thing in the whole wide world and that's a very very common you have to kind of have an expanding explanation for what you're experiencing any other questions about any aspect of this pardon me are you cold yep yeah cold cuz that's really cold is it cold in here is it sleep as I count back from 5:00 to 1:00 the temperatures gonna go down to normals they count back from 5 to 1 the twitchy's gonna go away the temperatures gonna be absolutely perfect you gonna be cool calm collected and you're not going to be cold at all anymore by the time I reach number one the temperature's going to be perfect 5 going deeper and deeper for temperatures becoming perfect now 3 loose and limp and five that little man standing on the shoulder let that suggestion sink very deep in your mind only the persons who shoulder I'm touching very deep very deep very deep very deep very deep very deep very deep very deep and relaxed kind of fine when you open your eyes the very first thing you're gonna notice is that you two are stuck together you two are stuck to gether can't let go no matter how hard you try stuck few seals those handle lock sealed fused and stuck together until I come up and touch your forehead stuck together eyes wide open it's count of five one two three four five seven is called a negative hallucination she can concentrate so well that she wants to she can wipe something out of her mind we all do this to various degrees it's focusing so intently on one thing that you literally do not see what's right before your very eyes magicians are fluent with this because they'll distract you over here while they're doing something over here it's there she kind of knows it's there but for the life of her she just can't see it let's give you just one most I want you to look very carefully at me I know what you think really really hard you have any idea where your shoe is look at me and Eddie at all do you know where this just come on tell me the truth you know the shoe is do you have any idea at all where it is you sure if I give you 20 bucks when you tell me where shoot yeah all yours now have a seat here woah oh yeah what you missed her you missed your friend over there go get her now Taylor where's your gun can't you can't shoot yourself your gun that would be suicide right so here's we're gonna do you're gonna shoot that wall but it's gonna hit the wall it's gonna bounce off that back wall it's gonna ricochet off that side wall and then it's gonna come straight at you and put you into a deep sleep but you probably don't believe that do you well shoot that well see what happens shoot that wall it's going to bounce off that it's gonna hit that it's when it comes straight at you see what happens give it up for these guys these guys are ex give it up [Applause] all right we've had some fun they've allowed you to have some fun are there any questions about this I hope you're understanding what it is you're seeing you know we've had fun and games with this now imagine if these folks took this technique at home and put themselves in this state of mind instead of imagining that they couldn't find their shoe imagine that they weren't focused on being afraid and they started focusing on being better at school or liking math or enjoying science imagine if their visualization was tuned to something positive instead of something that was fun and games any questions at all about any aspect of this yes part knee hip no server whoa say it again oh the hidden observer I'm sorry I thought he said they have no server I was good that's a new one the well Dexter has a hidden observer no I'm just kidding this is the observing yourself do things is that what you're referring to we're kind of outside of yourself looking at yourself yeah we all to a very great extent this goes back to the trance-like state observe ourselves we're observers of our own actions an example I would use was I had gone skydiving quite a number of years ago and I was all excited about it and you know it's kind of interesting experience you jump on an airplane in tandem you're a mile or so up you fall for 60 seconds the chute comes up you you you you go to earth and afterwards I was remembering it and I realized that I could remember very little of it what I was remembering is what a great story I was going to tell people about the event while it was happening and not paying attention to what was actually happening and most of us do kind of look outside of ourselves we observe ourselves give you another example don't laugh try to remember the last time you took a bath or shower strange thing to ask do it try remember the last time you taking a bath or a shower most if not all of you when I asked you to do that just unconsciously took your mind out of your body it's like you're outside of yourself looking at yourself standing in that shower or sitting in the bathtub right it's not the way it really happened when you were taking the shower or the bath you were seeing things through your eyes so all you should be recording now are tiles on the wall or fixtures on the bathtub and yet most of you unconsciously included a picture of yourself did you not you do that thousands of times a day in other words if you were to run into me a year from now I'm in an airport I recognize okay hey you hypnotized the people at Park Vista High School do you remember that if you remember today most of you are likely to remember it as if you're outside of yourself looking at you and I talking to each other as opposed to looking at me from my level you unconsciously include a mental representation of yourself and that mental representation affects you in a variety of ways if you see yourself as an overweight person you're probably in have a weight problem too you alter the picture if you see yourself as being inadequate in a certain situation I don't like this I can't handle this I'm not good at this you'll tend to act that out that picture dictates many aspects of your behavior and we all do it we're just not aware that we do it this is why if you talk to a police officer and they'll have ten people witness a crime they often get ten totally different descriptions because people are unconsciously including themselves in it any other questions about any aspects of this yes sir I repeat I haven't done anything to these people all I have done is set a series of circumstances that allowed them to go into a trance any competent hypnotist is likely to tell you that they don't hypnotize anyone this is all self-hypnosis all I do is structure the environment and if I told them to do anything they didn't want to do you know actually if she I made I cross the line at one point God you know you're naked anybody you know nobody else got their clothes on if she felt very very uncomfortable with that and tart she wouldn't have done it or she would have overreacted or you know asked me not to do it people won't do something they don't want to do you know you can't make him do anything or become anything they don't want to do I didn't mean to imply did she like that either I know that that's what you're thinking that came out all wrong what I'm saying is that she is in control that at all times you know if I cross the line at any point they will let you know you've crossed the line poor example on my part anyone else yes sir I'm not sure I understood your question if I got him to do what's called a posthypnotic suggestion yes in other words it's called a posthypnotic suggestion it's very common if I were to suggest well I'll give you an example that before the end of the day fair enough okay any other questions yes sir ma'am I'm sorry yes yes well spontaneously ninja is rare but it does occur about 5% of the time especially with very good subjects I take care and you'll see as I wake people up you're in complete control you and you alone or total in control this situation it's it's rare for a person to experience spontaneous amnesia the way I do it because I'm very careful about telling them they're completely in control however there are some people that just spontaneously mmm knees until they're reminded do you remember your arm being put out oh now I remember remember laughs and oh yeah and then you remembered everything it happens now therapists will use amnesia therapeutically sometimes they'll tell people they don't need to remember about the suggestions to stop smoking or lose weight so the person isn't involved they're not really actively testing it seeing if they can tear it apart sometimes it's best to get them out of it so it does have therapeutic benefit but in my format I'm very careful about you're in control you remember you know everything about what's going on one more question that I got a call today yes no I said that was for 10 minutes I think is what I said hope it doesn't happen yeah yeah call me back from Roanoke Virginia all right we got to wake these guys up here first thing I'm doing I'm gonna count back from five to one as I count back from five to one every suggestion I gave you up here is going to be totally removed stay deep asleep but everything's back to normal temperatures back to normal your shoes back to normal II can find your shoe everything is back to normal 5 going deeper and deeper for all the suggestions being removed back to normal 3 2 & 1 everything's away what deep asleep everything's the way it was before now I want to give you some positive suggestions before you wake up this is going to be the most important thing I say all day so please listen carefully from this moment forward from this moment forward you and you alone are totally in control this state of mind I'm gonna say it again ma'am from this moment forward you and you alone are in complete and total control this state of mind let me explain what that means that means from this moment forward you're going to be able to get back to this state of mind whenever you want and we're you want very easily very quickly and you're gonna be able to do it just like you did it here all you got to do is pick a spot to look at just like you did here take a few slow deep breaths just like you did here and then start slowly counting in your mind back from five to one as you count backwards you'll feel it coming back again this wonderful deep relaxation by the time you reach the number one you're going to be even deeper than you are right now and here's the best part you're gonna be able to give yourself suggestions that are every bit as powerful as any suggestions that I could ever give to you keep that in mind you completely and totally control this state of mind from this moment forward you're gonna be believe yourself any helpful positive suggestions they will be every bit as powerful as any suggestions that I give to you best part of all in a moment as I count from one to five you will awaken you'll feel rested refreshed and vigor eight or relax you're gonna feel better than you felt in the longest time totally alert invigorated refreshed one little thing however some time after you awaken some time after you awaken you're gonna hear me say the word success the instant that you hear me and only me say the word success you're going to jump up from wherever it is you're sitting and you're going to shout at the top of your voice just like Bugs Bunny that's all folks you're gonna shout at the top of your voice whenever you hear me say the word success now that's all folks whenever you hear me and only me say the word success let that suggestion sink into the deepest part of your mind in a moment I'm going to count from one to five as I count forward you will awaken completely feeling rested wonderful refreshed invigorated better than you felt in a long long time let's start that process right now one your arms and your legs are starting to wake up you can feel this happening to your mind in your body are waking waking waking you're starting to sit up straight in the chair your eyes are opening your thoughts are clear and focused - your mind is clear sharp focused precise you feel wonderful three seeing I'm stating the chair waking waking waking eyes wide open totally wide awake refreshed relaxed four totally alert waking completely eyes wide open four and five all this applause is for these guys who have relaxed so very well do any of you folks have any questions for me well you know I'm gonna send you back to your seats I just got a few closing comments for these guys I want to thank you all for coming up here good luck to you all Thanks these guys factories thank you so much probably no oh I hear you can you could you stretch yourself to the point where you strain a muscle or something theoretically possible but most people again it's all self hypnosis they will not put
