I actually had difficulty finding guys for some reason a million women not that many guys today so mmm scuse me I have chosen a number of folks I'm gonna invite them to join me up front those that was looking for better than average hypnotic subjects and I had quite a few females that I could have picked quite easily I had difficulty finding the right number of men is what took so long I don't know why every once in a while you get a skewed result but I would often sometimes say are men better subjects and women are by snow equal suggestibility every test that's ever been done today however I did have a little difficulty finding the guys as opposed to the women but I did pick out folks that appear to be very good hypnotic subjects I was doing these very simple tests looking to see how suggestible they were how connected the mind in the body was and these folks appear to give very good response so observe what happens when you get a good visualizer someone that has that you know kind of connection look what happens when you start giving them other kinds of suggestions have any of you ever been hypnotized before first time for all of you have you ever been hypnotized never are you hypnotized right now yes or no don't know oh good answer first name so when I will do my best to remember that and stuff when do you feel like you're wide awake right now okay good honest do you more comfortable until I ask you to awaken you really are you're concentrating beautifully I chose these individuals because they seem to be suggestible seem to be able to take in an example a suggestion and turn it into action one of the promises I made you folks I said that if you observe when I bring people up I'm going to show them how to relax mentally as well as physically and you have to acknowledge this is pretty much as relaxed as a human being can be and still be drawing a breath so you have this profound state of relaxation why because of what they're visualizing right now I was asking them to visualize loosen limp their bodies completely relaxed that's the net result what is the opposite of deep relaxation how about stiff and rigid does it stand to reason to you if I would simply change the imagery in their mind instead of having them focus on being loose and limp and relaxed if I asked them to focus on being stiff and rigid like a steel bar would you expect a totally different response this has importance because if you see the test you're taking as being frightening terrible and awful as opposed to interesting and fun and a challenge you're gonna respond totally different to it I'll get you out of here it's not so you can leave you're not tied up you can go right now if you want then you find you find there you go no problem thank you for coming dear indeed so okay in a moment in just a moment I'm gonna count from one to five at the count of five I'm gonna ask all of you eyes wide open but still responding to the sound of my voice it's kind of next what you saw there if you think about it is an excellent example of emotional control for example if I asked any of you to laugh like this only the person showed on touching funny seeing the whole wide world thousand times funnier ten thousand times for him a million times where sleep hey [Applause] think about what you just saw think about what you just saw that's a remarkable degree of emotional control obviously that's not a fake laugh that's not hahaha that's real funny she was able to tap in and find a wellspring of emotion and turn it on which is impressive but also she had no idea whatsoever when I was gonna cut my hand and she went out like a light switch that is even more difficult so with this state of mind if you master it you really can increase your confidence increase durability relax increase your ability to stay focused the beauty of this particular state of mine is there are many many different things that you can do with it these folks seem to be out of it in a very very real way but I wanted to show you this idea of the opposite of relaxation so if you give me just a moment I will explain in a moment you'll feel me extend one of your arms as I extend it feel that aren't becoming stiff like a bar of Steel as I extend your arm concentrate feel the arm stiff and rigid like a steel bar concentrate rigid and stiff feel the arm locking into your shoulder stiff and rigid rigid and stiff concentrating stiff like a steel bar well it's your shoulders stiff more stiff welded Sushil right they're stiff and rigid beautiful stiffen rigid feel the arm now rigid and stiff stiff and rigid as if it were a barbed steel welded to your shoulders stiff and rigid rigid and stiff beautiful just like a steel bar excellent like a steel bar well it's your shoulder stiff and rigid rigid and stiff and as I extend your arm it becomes rigid stiff stiff and rigid in a moment as I count back from three down to one the arm becomes more stiff and rigid with each number so stiff and rigid that by the time I reach number one you'll discover you cannot lower or bend it no matter how hard you try by the time I reach number one like a steel bar welded there you go stiff and rigid like a steel bar three getting more stiff and rigid too as if it were a bar of steel welded to your shoulder one so incredibly rigid and stiff now even as you try it won't go down no matter how hard you try no matter what you do until you hear me clap my hands and I want you to try I want you to feel it's important to lower that arm but you'll discover it's just not going anywhere until I caught my hands in fact even as I press on the arm even as you feel me pressing on the arm it's just as stiff and as rigid as a bar of steel well it to your shoulder it's just as stiff and as rigid as a steel bar well it's your shoulder I need a skeptic you got that I don't believe what I'm saying look in your eyes you want to see hope you try this out you don't have to be don't want but come on about shakes stiff and rigid what I'm trying to illustrate a few months ago like a barbed steel rigid and stiff like a steel bar even as I press on it's different feel even though I press on it's stiff and rigid I was trying to illustrate that a few moments ago you saw these folks profoundly relaxed because I was asking them to visualize loose and Limp like a rubberband completely totally relaxed now we've simply changed the image in their mind to stiff and rigid and ruminating the first thing would be Emily would you press down on this young lady's arm and put to the group what that feels like to you in terms of you get like resisting would be a good word right well I'll tell you what press on that young lady's arm as well to make sure it's not a fluke pretty stiff right now if you step over here if you turn around to the group just one moment back here just take as long as you need and imitate it now you you felt for yourself how rigid and stiff they were right so you think long as you want you do anything you want see if you can imitate that degree of rigidity and do however you want to do it make your arms stiff and as rigid as theirs are and you tell me when you're doing it I don't care what's wrong you use fair enough are you ready okay two fingers squeak try again right Sarge again ready hey not easy to do is it okay especially when you're pressing out here because this is a lever that's the fulcrum point and as you go out on a lever the pounds per square inch go up exponentially and yet you go out to this young lady's arm and I believe she'd be the first to report to you this is a completely different type of rigidity agreed one last thing they had their arms out like that going on for five continuous minutes try to do this when you go home tonight go home tonight and see thing and hang on right there for 90 seconds and see what it starts to feel like you're seeing a visual example of what's going on inside their brain in their mind they're focusing on the image of their arm like a steel bar so it's acting like a steel bar thank you so much I appreciated the moment I caught my hands your arms drop back down you fall twice as deep and sleep imagine that twice his deepest sleep now sleep twice as deep five four three two one deeper deeper deeper and deeper more and more relaxed all the way down five four three sleep - oh are gonna be part of an actual real experiment I will describe what I'm doing later it would contaminate the experimental results if I tell you now but you're about to see an actual real experiment and I am going to take only the person whose shoulder on touching deeper and deeper more more relaxed deeper sleep all the way down in a moment when I reach number five I'm gonna ask you to open your eyes and when you open your eyes and look out into the audience you're gonna see a big blue circle a giant blue circle above the audience and what I want you to do is start at the top of that circle with your eyes and slowly trace a smooth circle all the way around that blue smokeless circle that is in on top of the audience again whenever you summon five you'll open your eyes you'll see a giant blue circle hovering above the audience I want just start at the top slowly trace a smooth circle with your eye movements mr. cameraman can you get as close to our eye movements as you can one two three four five eyes wide open and whenever you're ready no no no with your eyes and don't move your head just your eyes nice round smooth circle all the way down keep going follow it all the way around keep going beautiful try again excellent now imagine there's a line across the room a blue line from the far left to the far right of the room slowly trace a smooth blue line without moving your head slow straight again again nice and slow beautiful nice and slow perfect sleep deep sleep deep see before you leave I promise I will explain what that experiment is about it actually is a real experiment and it actually does have real meaning only the person show them having a shoulder on touching eyes with the count of five you're gonna see a red line hovering across the audiences above the audience and from left to right without moving your head I want you to slowly trace from the left side of that line all the way to the right side a nice smooth movement one two three four five eyes wide open there's a red line would you slowly trace from one side of him to the other with your eye movements nice and slow there you go beautiful close your eyes for just a moment when you open your eyes again there's gonna be a giant red circle trace a slow red circle from the top nice and slow smooth and round all the way around all the way around all the way in eautiful sleep deep see there's some fascinating research going on about hypnosis one experiment has to do with color they take a cardboard with colored rectangles on it put a control group in an MRI machine and say stare intently at the red stare intently at the blue stare intently at the yellow stare intently at the green and they want to see what parts of the brain light up then they take a control group and they take the colors away it's just a piece of cardboard with blank rectangles and they'll ask the person the machine when you open your eyes I want you to imagine you're seeing a red triangle now I want you to imagine you're looking at a blue or green a yellow and they see what parts of the brain light up then they take a group of highly hypnotizable subjects put them in the machine give them the plain piece of cardboard with nothing but the outlines when you open your eyes you're gonna see a red rectangle then a blue one and a green then a yellow one same parts of the brain light up with the hypnotized subjects has light up with the people that are actually looking at the colors different from the control group that's trying to imagine the colors now that experiment you just saw was one I came up with the other day if that is correct the experiment at Stanford if you ask a person to trace a circle with their eye movements a perfectly smooth circle you can't do it with an imaginary circle if you watch a person you'll see their eyes and moving what's called saccades so moving from point to point to point if you ask them to trace a smooth line typically you get point to point to point it occurred to me that if you had a good subject and told them they they were seeing a line you might get a smooth line those two women come with a perfectly smooth circle or a perfectly smooth straight line without there actually being a line in a circle we would have made history that would have been the first time in history that had ever been done and that would have been significant because it would have shown that a person in hypnosis actually is seeing the line they have different physical responses than a person that's not in hypnosis a simple experiment had some good subjects thought I'd give it a shot you guys recognize it I'll go back and review the videotape and see if there's any differences but that's what I was doing that for are there any mind there is one more experiment I would like to perform here with the group and here's the deal here you go deep asleep when I reach number one your name's Maddy again 3 2 1 your name's back to Maddy everything's normal Maddy in a moment I'm gonna count from one to three and when I reach the number 3 you will see a chair you'll open your eyes you'll see a chair in the middle of stage I'm excellent done got it any questions that experiment by the way just so you know there are those who say that if you give a person any suggestion they will walk right on top of or I'll give you another example out in a few minutes before I describe it but explain ok any other questions before you wrap this up any questions about any of this yes sir yes they are awake now I know that sounds odd they are awake now what I have successfully done is focus their conscious attention so that this trance state which has been there all along has emerged they will allow it to stay there as long as I don't violate any boundaries if I tell them to pay me money or jump off a building or kill somebody or do something they are not inclined to do they will break that boundary very quickly but you see a person now focused in thought by the way the same thing is happening in the country right now you see people that are harnessed in a bubble of certain thinking and acting upon those beliefs there are people who think the earth is flat they drive to work every day using a GPS whose every equation is based on the earth being round but they will use the GPS and still maintain that the earth is flat system is very powerful yes sir faking no I'm not sure yeah in other words I'm not sure what faking is or their people up here there that are less hypnotized than others that are kind of drifting in and out of it you know absolutely are there some that are totally out of it you know absolutely it's not an on and off switch it's a continuum it's much more like that yes sir it's the bell curve you know you'll get an average response about 60% of people some people I I made it clear I brought these folks up because they appeared to be better than average subjects and I wanted to do some dramatic things yes ma'am can you help OCD and addictions that you've done there has been some success with it not as much as people would hoped the opioid addiction is physical as well psychologically addictive and it's not as much as they hoped it would you will again get you know some dramatic responses with Halen's in continuum but that big mass in the middle has proved resistance because of the dual addiction of mental as well as physical to be honest with you it doesn't happen it has a higher recidivism rate than anybody expected alright we're gonna have this up take a nice deep breaths
