the Second Story entitled mom learns a lesson Craft Center is is not a daycare the third Story how a lawyer uncovered a corporate scam and fought for justice the first story is I need a checkout receipt or the story of the woman who keeps all her important documents in her bra this afternoon a very weathered looking woman walks into the lobby and asked if we had rooms available let's call her Smokey I tell Smokey what our prices are and she asks if she can pay cash I tell her we actually need a card now to be precise we do accept cash for the room but we still need a card on file for incidentals but I didn't get that specific with her because I didn't actually expect her to stay and was hoping she would just leave Smokey was clearly troubled from the get-go and I wanted her out of there as quickly as possible she mumbled something about not having a card asked another vague general question and then left I thought that would be that I was so wrong about an hour later she comes back she would like to stay here after all as it turns out I ask her what room type she decided on she wants a bed in one of our shared dorms great I'll need a photo ID and a credit or debit card do you want them both at the same time or one of them first I tell her I need both she reaches into her bra and pulls out just her ID don't pull on it she warns me there's a layer of plastic coating on the front of the ID that's ripped up and crumpled against itself if I uncrumple it and press it flat I can read all the lettering on her ID great okay now I need your card she wants her ID back before she'll give me her card I was a little taken aback since normally people actually do give me both at the same time and while I have both in front of me I can verify that the names match but I figure I already typed her name in so I can check in that way so I give her back her ID at this point she starts unwrapping a Visa gift card that she bought at the store I tell her she has to have a card with her name on it now she starts yelling at me you never said that I told you the card I had from my bank stopped working I'm sorry for the misunderstanding but it's actually fairly standard for hotels to require you to have a card that matches your name I tell her well is it for incidentals can I give you a cash deposit my manager was close by and was able to jump in at this point he tells her that we can take a $200 cash deposit Smokey is now pleased that a manager is paying attention to her oh are you the manager you know I used to work in hotel Administration she tells us I find it extremely unlikely that someone who's worked in a hotel would be so shocked that someone at a hotel front desk would want a credit or debit card with her name on it but whatever I take her money $100 bill and 520s for the deposit then some more 20s for the room I give her a receipt for the deposit have her sign our check-in sheet and give her a key for her room I thought that would be that I was so wrong approximately 3 hours later she comes down to the desk again yeah know Smokey tells me I'm just not liking the feeling of the shared room and I haven't done anything in there all I did was sit on the bed and organize my makeup she says she tells me she wants to switch to a private room I tell her the private room is going to be $180 plus tax what a few hours ago it was $140 she screams this is absolutely false is this a hostel or a hotel apparently it's outrageous that we dare to charge market rate prices on a busy weekend with a major event in Town how did the price jump to $180 when it was only $140 a couple hours ago the price was not $140 a couple hours ago well are there any discounts I offer her a quite Hefty discount and calculate the price difference between what she paid in the new price apparently it's still too expensive for her at this point my heart rate is highly elevated with fight ORF flight adrenaline coursing through me smokey was being extremely hostile in a way that I'm afraid I can't really capture properly here and the dialogue I've presented here is but a fraction of what actually went down at this point she decides that she just wants to check out and guess what she wants now if you guess that she wanted a full refund you'd be right so I pull up the reservation log Miss Smokey you checked in almost 3 hours ago it will be quite impossible for me to give you a refund well okay so let's take the fraction of the time that I've spent out of 24 hours no I cannot give you a refund she asks for her deposit back certainly I'll need your key back I'll give you your key back after you give me my deposit back I'll give you your deposit back after you return the key I tell her she pulls the key card out of her bra then she fishes out the security pass that we had put with the key with her name and reservation number printed on it before she gives it back to me I have no idea why she would want to keep that I open my cash drawer and give back exactly those bills the 105 ratty 20s she gave me earlier out of her bra smokey now I need a checkout receipt we don't do checkout receipts yes you do you have it within your power to make a checkout receipt I signed a form when I checked in you gave me a receipt when I gave you a deposit now I need a receipt to show that I checked out and I got my deposit back I mean I would think having the cash in your hand would be proof that you got your deposit back but whatever this woman was not going to leave without a checkout receipt whatever that was fine what do you want it to say Smokey it should say I've checked out and today's date and the time fine I open up a text document type in I've checked out along with the date and time and print it out on our crappy receipt printer Smokey is not pleased I explained to her that I gave her exactly what she asked for and that I can have it say whatever she wants it to say she just needs to tell me what she wants on this stupid piece of paper because I sure as hell don't know what a checkout receipt is she tells me to add the name of our property in her name I add I print she leaves I immediately put her on our DNR list the second story is entitled mom thinks our Craft Center is a daycare I made a Reddit account just to share this story it happened more than once at the water park resort I worked at for a year or so let me preface this story by mentioning I'd been working with kids for over 10 years at this point both in daycare and in the entertainment sector backstory the local waterp part Resort I worked at was geared towards families so we had an era area where kids and their parents could come and do crafts together it had little tables with crayons and free coloring pages and books to read we also offered several paid activities such as Ceramics to paint and t-shirts to die let's call it the kids club I was told by several co-workers upon being hired that parents were fond of trying to drop their children off in the kids club only to wander off and abandon them this resulted in one of the employees on duty there were usually two of us having to chase the parent down to inform them they had toay with their kids children over the age of 13 were allowed to come in on their own but only an adult could supervise younger children this will be relevant later I was on my game from day one and families loved me even when I had to deal with EPS I could be so frustratingly sweet and firm that they'd eventually relent I'm a pretty tall guy so I assumed most parents simply felt they couldn't push me around this one family came in a mother em and her probably 5-year-old son a nice kid enk she crouches down and tells him to have fun before making her way to the door me excuse me ma'am you can't leave your son here you've got to stay with him em he's just coloring he won't be a hassle and I'll be downstairs at the bar if you need me me and we're delighted to have him but per company policy we can't allow children under 13 to be in here by themselves I apologize em fine the mother takes her son and leaves I think that's the end of it but then the kid returns this time with his sister who looks about 13 or 14 and isn't entirely happy about the situation she had a wand in her hand which was used to play the magic themed game we had all around the resort I figured her mother must have pulled her away from her game to make her watch her brother the nice kid excitedly returns to the table where he'd been coloring I looked to the sister me is your mother with you s no she's not she said I could be in here with him by myself me I'm afraid she misinterpreted you can be in here without supervision but if if your brother wants to play in here your mom has to be with him s I'll go tell her then come on in K the kid looked pretty sad to be pulled away from his art again so I went over and grabbed some crayons for him I held them out with a smile me here you go buddy just bring these back when you're done with them and only use them on the paper Okay ink smiles thank you once more I assume things are done even if the kid didn't bring back the Crayons it was fine they were just crayons and I had made a kid happy oh how wrong I was the next day I'm working the morning shift I had worked in the afternoon the day before IEM comes in with her son she buls at seeing me sitting in the room sorting out crayons em what are you doing here me putting on my best service smile I work here ma'am are you going to color with your son today or would you like to do some of our paid activities em why can't I just leave him here you've got nothing better to do you're just messing with crayons she smiles convinced she's bested me even if it is company policy she's right the kids club was pretty dead as it was a slow weekday she hadn't counted on me being experienced with the daycare system me ma'am I cannot do that not only is it company policy but this kids club is not in any way certified as a daycare we don't have emergency contact information we're not trained in CPR which is a regulatory for daycare workers nor are we equipped to be qualified as daycare this room has one single exit a clear violation of building code for any basic child facility I'm the only one on duty and while I do have various certifications and a degree I was hired to be an Entertainer not a daycare worker if you leave your son here I will call security because not only would it violate my contract but you would be participating in willful neglect of your child we have signs posted that all children must be accompanied by an adult and I have now informed you of this no less than two times your son is absolutely welcome here but you must stay with him she was shocked I don't know if it was due to the unsettling customer service tone I took with her or the fact that I was obviously up to date on Child Care regulations either way she shut her trap sat in one of our tiny chairs and let her son color her son and I read stories together too but I made sure she remained in the room we weren't a daycare and I'd be deed if I let her treat us like one I found out later she tried to complain about me but seeing as how we had video surveillance that showed her trying to leave her child more than once the complaint was thrown out and not put on my record the third story is companies can fill your termination notice with untrue information which can f you up if you can't prove they're untrue I'm a lawyer in Brazil specialized in consumer law so I don't usually come across stories like this one but this one time we had to review my brother-in-law's termination and see if we could find anything wrong he had total an office car in an accident during the weekend he was drunk they fired him and made him pay the premium for the car's Insurance two years later the office sued him for damages alleging that he never paid the car he wrecked that's when he brought his situation to me and my wife to figure out after studying labor law for a week we found a way to defend him against that lawsuit and sue the company for three times the amount they were asking in wages and benefits he was entitled to here we go and this is why you shouldn't sign anything before reviewing any papers they present you he was hired as an engineer to work in the ampliation of power plant this is important his termin papers mentioned that one he had an advance on his salary on his last month this was actually the insurance premium from the car but they wrote it as an advance to avoid leaving a paper trail two his position was engineering assistant they actually changed his job description without his knowledge after hiring him so he worked 2 years earning below minimum wage for engineers in my country this way they could get away with one waiting two years to sue him saying he never paid anything to fix the car and two paying him less than was required by law thankfully in Brazil we have pretty strong labor laws so you're able to null anything done in writing if you can prove the information in there is untrue this is what we ended up doing we found conversations via WhatsApp between him and HR talking about the car's insurance and how he'd be able to pay this convinced the judge he did in fact pay for a premium somewhat contradictorily the judge ruled the company never actually received the insurance and ruled for my B to pay for the damages anyway while the company was to reimburse him for his premium we're looking into appealing this decision we haven't made up our minds yet we were able to prove with witness testimonies that he in fact worked as an engineer even if his papers said otherwise so the judge ruled the company should pay back two years of wages which already has double the value of the car so we are winning there are some minor things that will have to appeal but this is a win for us as is subscribe click the like button if you want to support the
