hey guys it's Kimberly from the fat corner shop and I'm here with Cheri McConnell and we both love creative grids rulers and I love the strip ology ruler but she loves it more than me so today she's going to show all of us her simple tricks I'm super excited to share this strip ology ruler with you I'm kind of a ruler geek and I'm always looking for ways to save time and this ruler will do just that it's great for cutting two-and-a-half inch strips for bindings for sashings it's also great for cutting squares and rectangles and I'm super excited to show you how to do it we started out with a 21 and a half inch by width of fabric piece of fabric which we're going to fold and we will be cutting all of our strips with the fabric folded so it's going to save a lot of time this way we're going to take a ruler and we're going to place it on top of the fabric there are slots and when you place the ruler on top of the fabric you want to make sure that the slots extend beyond both sides of your fabric so that when you cut your cuts will go right through the fabric and you're going to line up the ruler with your fabric and we are ready to start cutting now okay when you line up the fabric with the ruler I just want to point out a couple of things you want to make sure that the left edge of the fabric extends beyond the zero so that you'll have a little bit of extra fabric there when we make that first cut also notice that I lined the bottom folded edge of the fabric up with the black line here and that is so that the extension on the slot will extend beyond the fabric so that we can make our cut all the way through the fabric the slots on the strip ology ruler are in 1/2 inch increments and to make it even easier there are markings there are squares and stars that make it easier to cut the size strip that you want to make the squares if you just cut at the square markings you'll be able to cut two and a half inch strips and if you cut at every star marking you will be able to cut one and a half inch strips okay we're going to make our first cut at the zero line and we're just going to push the blade all the way through and we're going to make our next cut at the next square and I just can't even imagine how much time this will save need strips for sashing or strips for a binding you can cut them very quickly with this ruler and we'll make our last cut at the last square okay when you're finished cutting and you can discard the end pieces you won't be using them and then you can just take your strips stack them up and you can see how amazing it is and how quickly we cut a whole pile of two and a half inch strips okay now I'm going to show you how you can take those strips that you've cut and turn them quickly and easily into a pile of squares so I've already cut the strip's like I showed you before and I'm going to just turn the mat to make it a lot easier I'm going to bring down some strips I'm actually going to bring down five strips and I'm going to place the ruler on them again and again I'm going to do the same thing that I did before I'm going to make sure that the ends of the slots extend beyond the fabric if the ends of your fabric um if that if the ends don't extend you might have to take off a strip I'm only going to be able to get four here and everything's matching up and so now I'm going to do exactly what I did before I'm going to start at the zero with my first cut and I'm going to cut at the squares again so I'll have two and a half inch okay I've made all the cuts it's time to move the ruler you're again going to have little pieces on the end that you just discard and then all of a sudden you have piles and piles of squares this is great for when you're making those projects that tell you right off the bat to cut 162 and a half inch squares we've just done it in a matter of seconds so don't stress the next time you are sewing a pattern and it calls for 222 and a half inch squares use the strip ology ruler and make them in a matter of seconds that was truly amazing thanks so much for sharing your tips oh thank you I love this ruler it really saves a ton of time especially when you're cutting squares rectangles and strips and of course you can pick up the strip ology ruler at the fat quarter shop com thanks for watching you
