How to transfer bees from Nuc to Hive | Beginner beekeeper tutorial [How to install a nuc of bees]

[Music] [Music] okay [Music] you can lean it over you can set it in it either way okay doesn't matter all right so you step over here so put the smoker on the hive right here give it a couple pumps make sure all right good morning we are here with cor Smith my youngest daughter cor has decided that that she wants to uh keep bees she's going to show us how to install her first nucleus of bees that we purchased from rural route Farms here locally um I know there are a lot of people out there who watch our YouTube channel who do business with us and and we greatly appreciate that we're going to show you this morning um cor installing a Nook of bees now we've brought these Bees home we have brought them against the hive we have opened their little front hatch as you can tell there's a little closure right here that when you get these bees this is snapped shut you stick a knife blade or a hive tool under it pop it up set it back down you create this little porch area these be have been setting here for approximately 40 minutes um we we're not doing anything more than showing them that they can come in and out of their door they've been moved you can see the displacement they're not going to go far from your nucleus um core is going to show you stepbystep placement of the frames from the Nook box into her Hive body uh as You Can Tell She's Got her feed ready core go ahead and take your top off and show them what you got going on inside the hive she she chose a a 10f frame box you're going to run how many frames in it nine CU it has the SP okay and you're going to place the bees in in the center of your tin frame you I see you've got your feeder installed M over against the wall so that means you're going to place your bees in order from this box MH here here here here here the way they are in the nook correct mhm okay um I say you have an entrance reducer on on the front why why do you have your entrance reducer in play that way the bigger hives don't try to rob the nuke okay so your your bigger hives aren't picking on them if they have a smaller opening to the fence okay all right great well you you've done an outstanding job you and your friend on painting painting your hive body you kind of making dad stuff look like junk but uh I I guess as long as you and the bees are happy that's all that matters okay Cory well let's uh let's kind of get started what I will do is help you fill your feeder and then you're kind of going to be on your own you want to give them a full gallon they'll go a long ways if they got a gallon of feed you'll be having to put a super on these dudes pretty quick okay this one I know you like all right if you'll put your floats in like this yep it on and now they'll go right just push it right on down in there perfect now just take that one great okay now you got you some smoke I'm going to back up now you're on your own you you show the folks watching how you're going to do it I think if you'll just crack your lid give them a little smoking under the lid just be gentle and slow okay I'll hold your lid open for you so this Frame would go right here right that's correct like you have to you may have to work frames might be need to be worked apart stting to put some more smoke wouldn't hurt just keep keep them calm we don't want to over smoke [Music] them there you go as you go down in between them just work it over to the edge both hands so you come up straight now I noticed you're not necessarily concerned with seeing the queen right now right no job one is is you want to get these these bees situated into their box and and make a good transition there you go work them slow okay good job slowly man those are nice nice gentle calm bees lots and lots of brood I'm seeing on my side anyway I don't know what your side looks like okay go ahead and work that a little further away there you go y I heard it pop slow and straight up oh yeah this is going to make you a lot of these right here okay get that one what have they been building there well they just been building them a little cone has the awesome video dude has he picked off the queen in her in his filming I have not seen her yet okay I've been looking I can assure you she's there by the reaction of these bees it looks like all as well cor do you want to show them now just a little smoke on this clump of beef okay now I'm going to I'm going to intervene just for a moment and then you're going to show the folks what we're going to do with with the box here okay now remember as we talked you're going to take that box these remaining bees they're going to go in that height but due to the fact that that I have got colonies of bees setting out here we don't want to continue to leave these bees exposed we want to make this as quick and easy a transfer as possible so take this box let me move your smoker for you take your box walk around here to the front let Jason know you're coming and what you're going to do all your you're going to do is set this box right here and we're going to allow those VES to walk up in into the Hy okay they'll go right up here and go right on in I'm just going to take my hve tool we're done kind of doing what we're doing for just a minute and we got them set right there now go ahead and smoke your bees a little bit on on the top so that they get low and then you're ready for your inner cover proud of you you're doing great putting your first Nook in it goes this way Notch up yes ma'am you're right I believe they're they're so impressed about how nice a home they're moving into they're just no wonder they're not even bumping you or nothing they're excited as I am about you you having you want put those yep you're ready you want to get the spiders out M you got a SP two of them we can't have that okay okay now just take your smoker and blow a little smoke into that empty empty box kind of step right there and blow it that way and maybe drive them up the hill there's not not enough of them in there at this point to count they'll all get off that box so you see them coming up here now all right well what do you think about your first Nook install good no problems now are you going to continue to take care of this Colony yes this is going to be your project over summer correct mhm okay have you got a goal set for them like how far do you want to get them do would you like to push them into honey production at least one or two supers on top okay okay so your first and foremost goal is to keep these bees healthy expanding you put feed on them immediately because they've been moved they don't know where the forge is just yet uh you told me you put an entrance reducer on to keep the big big hives from picking at them you did a great job moving them you didn't you didn't fumble anything you know occasionally I'll fumble something and it so but but that's okay I thought you did a a fabulous job okay um we hope Hope by doing this that it puts a lot of your minds at ease uh for your first install there there's a ton of people out there who buy Nooks for the first time uh cor wanted to to show you her first time install um hoping that that gives everyone the confidence to do it let's talk about if if today when we picked the bees up uh had it been pouring rain um had there been an emergency that you had to get to that was going to take a little bit a phone call a zoom meeting or something you had time to get your bees come home and get them set down you notice she had her box placed beside her Hive and the front entrance popped open that counts for everything rain uh you know emergencies hey I got to do this you have time don't make it um a necessity your necessity lies within bringing these Bees home getting these bees set down beside where they're going if you've got all day and it's beautiful like it is today by all means open them up make the transfer put them in the order that they go in in the center of the hive don't get hung up on how do I feed them you can have a deep frame feeder you can have an entrance jar feeder um shut down the remainder of that opening these bees will be fed probably that one gallon of feed and it's going to push them through these remaining three frames that are in here with these bees cor will add her next box and we're going to we're going to show her doing this and coming along
