so I've got 15 tons of sand here I'm gonna use this and spread it all over my lawn and level it out and make it flat and I want to show you how I do that looks like this is just simple sand not too fine up to about two millimeters so for Kentucky bluegrass or cool season lawn you want to do this in the fall or in the spring so you want to do this when your grass is growing the most strong or vigorously if you have Bermuda that generally will be in the summertime it's really easy to do just shovel it on and throw it on now you wouldn't want to go putting this gas in the machine on the grass [Music] [Music] so I've got about half of that 15 ton pile of sand spread I've got it spread all over here we've got a spread over here and this is a crazy amount of work running out of steam holy crap I am tired so this is not difficult to do it's just hard work it's a matter of spreading sand it's putting in the hard work thread in the sand around it's really not that hard to do I would say that this is the hardest part of the operation just spreading the sand I'm almost done with this load I'll have about maybe five or six more of these little carts full and then move on to spreading it around on the long butt it is hard work for sure but for me it pays off I like a nice flat flat lon it's 807 p.m. and I've been working at this since 5:15 so it took me three hours to shovel 15 tons of sand there's a lot of moisture in the sand and when they stay in these piles the moisture doesn't come out so kind of want to knock them down tonight well it's kind of dark a little bit so as I spread it out just a little bit the sand will become more dry the reason I want to do that is because the drier the sand the easier it is to spread if it's wet it kind of clumps up doesn't doesn't work itself down into the canopy of the turf as easily the next day more sand coming another 15 tons I'm gonna put it here spread it out last time I did this a year ago I ran out of sand and it was a sheer disappointment so this year I don't want that to happen again [Music] [Music] the GT still runs round two [Music] [Music] okay so this is what I use to level out the lawn I drag this behind my four-wheeler ATV so this thing is ten foot long ten foot by twenty inches so this thing's constructed in a pretty simple manner it's just a piece of c-channel right here so it's 2 inches tall here and then one inch of here got a piece of seat channel here piece of angle iron here and then another piece of seat channel here I just welded this angle iron in the center so I kind of patterned this after something else that I saw on the Internet and so it's got kind of these cross members here weighs 65 pounds it's really kind of ideal for what I'm doing here so this is a 90 cc motor on this little four-wheeler I've got a bigger four-wheeler that I likely will be pulling out just kind of want to see how this thing works for towing around this drag device it's 65 pounds and kind of a little bit difficult with the sand and we're gonna see [Music] so it's just not gonna be strong enough so I'm gonna get out a machine that will that is sufficient for this job this boiler is clearly a better tool for the job and it's going to handle this drag no problem this is working just fine actually it's just kind of a long slow process of just dragging it in dragging it in so with the 10-foot long drag it just goes simple when it his fans really well so you're able to get all low spots pretty so you just got to keep dragging it and dragging it and slowly the sand just kind of works itself down into the canopy of the house and kind of disappears and it looks like a beach right now and that's a good thing for me all that driving around on the floor here that gave me a headache actually I'm either getting motion sickness carsick or from my head turned back like that looking at the sand it just kind of made me sick I don't feel very good let's say the project is a success so I've got a really low spot right in here so if you can see right there where I've got the sand it's pretty thick right through there and that is where I have a sprinkler trench that's low so over here the sand still quite heavy I'm not sure if I should just keep dragging it or try to maybe broom it in but so over here this kind of area right here is Oh probably over an inch deep in sand and I just put a crapload of sand down in my drain box there okay so it's two days after I spread the sand I think I spread this on Tuesday and actually it's Friday so that's a bad deal the grass is growing too much and I had to kind of wait for the sand to dry out but it looks like it's dry I'm gonna spread the sand around with the four-wheeler and the drag and kind of see if we can make them even more of the sand disapear I think that's pretty well gonna do it for this section unless I add more of that sand that's over there the rest of the stuff kind of has to be done by hand and with the push broom so I'm actually quite pleased because I was a little bit stressed out there for a minute that they had too much sand but with watering and kind of using the push broom I'll be able to get it all kind of worked into the soil and into the canopy of the grass it's got to get done quickly because the more the grass grows up the harder it is to spread sand and to thin it out so I think what I'll do now is throw more sand maybe in some of these outlining areas that I'm not able to get with the drag and then I'll likely spread it with and then I'll likely spread it with the push broom or the landscape rake so this is working good I'm really happy with this and it's just it's over it's so rewarding I love doing this because it's so rewarding and it just it gets smoother and smoother every year I do this so I think this is the one two three fourth time I've done this so this is the fourth time I've done this and it just gets better every time you can really kind of tell where the low spots are where the sand kind of doesn't move so those are the kind of areas that you got to really kind of work with the push broom so so the next tool I need to make is I need to get several of these broom heads so then I can mount these broom heads to the top of my drag and turn it over and if I got the froome's lined up all the way down then I could just drag it around this broom everything down in I really want to do that but it's one thing I have not gotten to so this brittle is an awesome tool when you're doing the top dressing it works the sand right down into the canopy so doing this all your lawn is easy molo puts and drag it in with some kind of a drag mat or something wide and then use a broom to work it down in do not smother your lawn or will not survive and repeated applications year after year it turns into a flat awesome piece of work [Music]
