a backsplash is not only a really practical element in your kitchen it can also make a real style statement I think you can never go wrong with a subway tile backsplash and to mix things up in this kitchen I added a darker grout now believe it or not installing a backsplash is a really quick and easy project if you follow these simple steps the first step is selecting the right tile for your space we went with a 12 by 12 sheet of smaller subway tile for this kitchen which is not only beautiful but it also makes installation go a little quicker I started by applying a backer board to this base then using a trowel applied mastic to the backer board here's a tip use a small trowel to back butter or apply mastic directly to the tile on places you can't get it on the wall drive it at first to make sure the tile fits and if it does apply mastic to that area then put the tile into place insert spacers between the tile sheets to make sure you have uniform spacing across the wall the spacers should match the space between tiles in the tile sheets apply a sheet of tile then work your way out when you come to a spot that needs a custom cut measure where the cut should go mark it then use a wet tile saw to cut the tile to size let your tiles dry overnight before grouting pick your grout based on the tile you're using expanded or unsanded in a clean bucket mix the grout by pouring the powder into a bucket then add water and stir until it's a cake batter consistency remove the spacers from the backsplash and wipe down the tiles with a fairly wet sponge to remove any dust use a trowel to apply the grout in sections moving back and forth to push the grout into the spaces now don't worry about getting grout on the tile the important part is to push enough grout into the spaces when you finish each section use clean water and a sponge to wipe off the excess grout on the tile surface get off as much as you can and then when it's dry you can wipe off whatever is left using a clean cloth if you have a free weekend you can do a backslash and it adds greatly to your home's value and style
