so we're going to show you how to tell the kitchen walls flashback tiles are a really great practical choice for any cooking and eating area they're waterproof stain resistant easy to clean and the color never fades they're common a huge variety of colors shapes and finishes that go with any style of kitchen fixnum isn't difficult with just a little bit of planning the right tools and attention to detail so Tara and I have already taken off the old tiles so the first thing to do is work out how many packs we're going to need to cover the area for this we just need a tape measure a pencil and some paper measure the height and width in meters and then multiply the two measurements to work out the area in square meters how's your math theory that's two point five three meters by point four three meters that's approximately one point one meter square we'll need to add on roughly about 10% for cutting and wastage so let's round that up to one point two square meters this pack covers half a square meter so we'll need three packs simple if the area tiling is in a regular shape for example where you might want the tiles to go further up the wall under an extractor hood just split the area into rectangles and measure the height and width of each rectangle and add them together knowing the amount of piked means that you also now much adhesive will need because the coverage in square meters is stated exactly on the table or bag don't forget we also need sufficient wall tile spaces and grout before we set out the position of the title's we have to prepare the wall surface the surfaces should be flat firm dry and free from any grits using the face mask in a well-ventilated area scrape off any wallpaper flaking paint or crumbly plaster if the wall has any defects such as damper decay these must be repaired first if you're in any doubt seek specialist advice now fill any holes or uneven surfaces but don't overfill and make any bumps you can use a straightedge such as a spirit level to check for bumps patches of new Behr plaster or old dry plaster can suck moisture out of the tile adhesive and stop the tiles from sticking properly to prevent this we need to prime the area with a suitable primer or PVA adhesive diluted with water the primer must be dry before you start tiling so apply it as early as possible and allow plenty of time for this you can tile over old ceramic tiles if they're flat and firmly fixed depending on the adhesive you're using check the packaging for instructions just make sure the grout joints overlap slightly for this kitchen we've chosen these ceramic tiles what you think nice a tarry nice Arthur now a top tip if your walls a bit wherever a smaller tile will conform to the ship better than a larger tail and be less likely to leave corner sticking up now we're going to set how to fix the tiles if your tiling between two walls you should always start from the center of the wall and work towards the corners don't start in a corner otherwise you could end up with a whole tile at one end and a small sliver at the other end you should own to have a similar size cut tile at each end unless you are lucky enough to have a wall length that takes a whole toilet each end meaning you don't have to cut one if you're tiling from a fixed object such as the end of a kitchen worktop you should start with a full tile at an end of the worktop and work towards the corner now we're ready to mark up if you're tiling above a kitchen worktop you should be able to tell straight above the worktop as long as it is level and flat if you're not tiling above a worktop or if your workshop isn't living a flat you'll need to fix a temporary batten to the wall Alain 450 millimetres by 25 millimetres playing soft wood commonly called two by one is often used but any suitable batting can be used where a baton is used it's normally fixed so that the tiling starts at the second row up cut tiles are then fixed in the first row after the batten is removed here we're tiling above a work top which is flat and level so no batten is required you'll need a notch spreader like this as well as your adhesive as we're using ceramic tiles you can use a ready-mixed adhesive if your tiling with porcelain tiles you'll need to use the pounded variety to set your tiles properly first apply some Adisa to the wall using the knob spreader initially only apply enough adhesive to fix four or five tiles at a time you can apply slightly larger area of adhesive once you get the hang of fixing the tiles never apply more than one square meter of adhesive at a time because the adhesive will form a skin before you can fix the tiles press the first tile firmly in place with a slight twisting sliding action to ensure optimum adhesive contact press the next tile in place and insert a tire space between the two towers before moving on to fix the next tile when using title spirits and you're doing a brick effect on the wall you can easily stop this little piece off via creation of te and just plain shifting light so make sure that the tile space is back from the surface of the tile otherwise it will show when the tiles are grout it occasionally lift a tile to check the contact between the adhesive and the tile is good you'll need at least 50% contact in a dry area like a kitchen it's best to fix all the whole tiles first before moving on to the cuts and other fiddly bits you can avoid accidents by keeping the work area tidy as you go also use thin gloves to keep your hands-free from adhesive my top tip is clean off any surplus adhesive from the child fissures and between tile joints as you go it's much harder to remove adhesive once it is set first score the glaze top of the top with the cutter wheel then you position the line over the pressure point bear down and the tile snaps like this so it's measure score break and make sure to score right to the edges for a good clean break when we come to obstacles like power points we may need to make an L shaped cut you cannot make an L shaped cut like this with a flatbed tile cutter you need to use a wet towel saw but if you don't have a wear tassel there is a way around it you'll need at a store like this measure and mark out the L using a pencil scroll the cut lines you flatbed tile cutter support the tile on a flat surface and cut along one of the cut lines using the tassel make sure that you cut right to the corner put the towel back into the flatbed tile cutter position the remaining cut line over the pressure point bear down and snap the tile if you have a small piece of child to remove you can do this using tile nippers like these before you start tiling make sure the electricity is turned off at the main fuse board check that it's off by plugging an appliance into the power point before you proceed any further once it's off remove the face fake screws and gently ease the plate forward then apply adhesive to the back of the tile and slip the tile into position now replace the faceplate screws and partially tighten the screws until the faceplate is back in position you may need longer screws now allow the Tyler DC's to fully set before you finally tighten the faceplate screws otherwise you might break the tile only turn the electricity back on when the faceplate is back in position drying times vary depending on their deceive you using so always check the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging you might need to allow at least 24 hours for the toilet duty to set before you start routing some Ready Mix tile adhesives are also suitable for grouting the tiles if the grout is impounded form you'll need to mix it with water until it's a smooth paste when mixing and using Grell use protective gloves and suitable protective clothing to prevent skin contact and use splash proof eye goggles to prevent any possibility of eye contact be careful not to mix too much or too quickly as you want to avoid trapping air in the ground grouting is always messy so use a plastic sheet to protect the surface below the tiles really work it into the gaps and use the spreads to clean the surface of the tiles as you go there's no real scientific way of doing it but just don't be shy when you finish an area allow approximately 15 minutes for the grout to dry before cleaning the tile surface with a damp but not wet sponge rinse out the sponge frequently with clean water remember you can choose different colors of graph that will either contrast or match your tiles depending on the look you want to achieve when the grout the set within the joint remove any remaining white haze by polishing the tile surface with a dry clean cloth or given the surface final wash with a dampened sponge and clean cold water and there we have it a lovely fresh detailed kitchen surface give it a try more ideas and know-how is a DIY job you you
