How To Extend Electrical Outlets Over Tile

hi today we're going to show you how to extend electrical outlet mounts so the outlet or switch can extend to the face of wall tiles when wall tile is installed around an electrical outlet the outlet needs to be moved out flush with the face of the wall tiles so to be able to tighten the outlet or switch down we need to install a spacer behind the outlet mounting straps this product or one like it is sold at most hardware and electrical stores it is a plastic spacer that sits between the electrical box and the outlet mounting strap it snaps together like plastic building blocks to make any depth you need to fit the space of your tiles they fold together like an accordion and then snap to each other the first thing you want to do when working with electrical outlets is to turn the power to the outlet to are working with off then make sure your tester is working and then test the outlet to double-check that the power is off click on this video link to learn more about shutting off and testing electrical circuits once the tile is installed you can see exactly how big of a gap there is and then estimate how many spacers you will need and compress the stack of spacers together and test it to make sure it is the right thickness you can add spacers or take them off to make the switch or outlet fit properly cut the remaining spacers off the stack and then set the spacers between the outlet and the outlet box to install the spacers you will push the outlet mounting screw through the hole in the spacer stack and start the screw threads do not fully tighten the screws at this time so you will be able to get the second set of spacers behind the outlet mount repeat the process for the second screw on the outlet after both screws and spacers are in place you can tighten the screws to the outlet box until the outlet is snug up against the spacers if the screws that came with your switch or outlet are too short to reach the Handy box then you can purchase longer screws in the electrical department of your hardware store after the outlet is mounted you can install the faceplate and then turn the power back on continue learning about tile projects by clicking on one of these videos thanks for watching
