today's vocal technique is going to help you strengthen your singing voice hello singers my name is Rania Peterson and as always I'm here to geek out on your voice and if you didn't already do it remember to get your free lesson in the link below I made it just for you to help you troubleshoot your singing so let's look at how we can strengthen a weak sounding voice and by this I mean a voice that's kind of breathy sounding [Music] or a voice that's kind of thin and quiet sounding ah and I just want to say that there's something wrong with that sound it actually is really beautiful when you do it in an intentional way but chances are that you're watching this video today because you also want to be able to have a strong voice and you can do that we just have to help you induce your vocal fold closure yeah foreign you see there is such a thing as different types of vocal folds closure or different ways that your vocal folds or vocal cords as we used to call them back in the day clothes to produce sound now when you breathe throughout the day your vocal folds are completely open or they are abducted as we also call it so that the air can just pass in and out and then when you sing or speak we close the vocal folds we adduct the vocal folds and then the air pass through them in like this bubbling motion like this and this is when you're producing sound and here's the kicker how tightly your vocal folds are closed when you sing affix your sound quality so the vocal folds they can vibrate like this and we see the time that they're actually closed before they move out again is a very short right or they can vibrate like this and you see the time that they actually get to be together is longer so we have a more vocal fold closure so when we have more vocal fold closure we have a stronger sound so chances are that if you feel like you're having a thinner sound than you want to you just need to induce we just need to get more vocal closure for you so first right now we're going to do a quick exercise to help you feel when your vocal folds close because of getting a focus on where we are really helps you within the next exercise we're going to practice a vocal fold closure okay let's feel the vocal folds close so your vocal folds are what we call smooth muscle or involuntary muscle and what that means is that you can't just be like close and then your vocal folds close kind of like with your arm I can bend my arm just by thinking about it but you can't be like close my vocals so you have to use imagery to get it right so what we're going to do is that we're going to imagine lifting something heavy and you will feel your vocal folds close up so here we go that way that you hold your breath when you lift something heavy that's you closing your vocals and you can hear the pop and actually what's really cool is that once you can get used to that sound of the pup you can close your vocal folds by imagining making that sound again you can't just like control them but you can use imagery to do it so you can just imagine that pop and that is also your vocal folds opening and closing and this closure is automatic when you sing it's just how tightly you get that everything close together that we can play around with when we get to this next exercise of vocal fold closure I want you to focus on this place right here not up here not down here not around not especially not all the way around here just this place on the inside where you make this sound okay what we're going to do to get a tighter vocal closure is to do Twang and this is not a twang that we know from country it's a twang where we are lowering the epiglottis which is this flat that sits right here above your windpipe we can close it down a little bit and we make the vocal tract more narrow and that induces vocal fold closure so let's try and get the twang in your voice right now by imitating this sound ah it has to be very piercing it's not very pretty right now so you can try and say without Twang [Music] and then turn that twang on and yeah you can think of saying yeah yeah really annoying really insisting try and overdo it yeah and you can really feel how even though you feel silly it's so loud and remember how we were just practicing feeling the vocal folds close here I want you to just relax everything it is just that little flap that's closing down it's nothing else it's not anything out here you're not going err right just let everything relax and let your vocal technique work for you you can say the sound of a sheep or you can maybe take the sound of a crying baby yeah yeah and that's actually kind of interesting right it's from nature babies they're twanging to be loud so that the mother can hear them that's kind of cool right so that's the sound that I want you to really get into so let's just try and hold the two up against each other so that you can really feel the difference so first we're going to take a breathy ah and then we're going to take a twang ah okay and over here and over here ah ah okay and now of course maybe you already guessed it we're going to swoop between the two we're going to go from one to the other and back because you might not just want to overdo it all the time right you want it to sound pretty at some point so that's when you can play with how much twang you put on your voice so let's try and start breathy then start closing the epiglottis down gradually to get more Twang and then taking it up again to take some twang away here we go oh and when you do this remember to take a good breath we can speed it up a little bit so that you don't run out of air so that I don't run out of air here we go right one more time [Music] super cool let me know in the comments how it's going I would really love to hear for many of our students and myself included this was a really big aha moment that I got when I started getting this technique right and as you're doing this just continue to think of that ah sound to get it again it's remember everything in here you know it's it's smooth muscle it's involuntary muscle like I just explained so you have to really think of all these things to get it right that's why vocal teachers and vocal coaches we often use so much imagery it's because you have to think of things to get your vocal folds to do what you want now if you're thinking that twang definitely got your voice louder but it is a little bit more of a brighter insisting sound than you were hoping for it is because you need to lower your larynx to create darker overtones yeah and to do that you can watch this video right here it's all about your larynx so I'll see you over there but we're going to continue to geek out on your voice to create the sound that you want foreign
