Let me ask you a question, what's the
biggest thing holding you back in life, preventing you from achieving your
wildest dreams? Most people would assume the answers money,
but it's not though. Everyone's arch nemesis is time itself.
See you can always make more money but, you can't make more time.
The things we choose to use our time on dictate how we live our lives. Do you know
that the average person will spend about a third of their life asleep?
That's over 25 years. I mean at least we're not as bad as cats
who spend up to 75% of their life asleep. During my time at university I actually
tried changing my sleep pattern. I read about something called polyphasic sleep,
allegedly something DaVinci himself did. The basic concept is if he can get
better quality sleep you don't need as much of it. The most extreme example is
something called the Uberman sleep cycle. It's when you take six naps evenly
spaced throughout the day for a total of 20 minutes per nap,
that's only two hours of sleep per day. That's an extra six hours to do whatever
you want. Documented cases of people successfully
using the Uberman sleep cycle are a few and far between so I picked a bit
more of a realistic sleep pattern, it's called the Everyman sleep cycle. Basically
there's a three hour core nap at night and then three 20-minute naps evenly
spaced throughout the day for a total of four hours of sleep per day, effectively
half the average. It almost worked too. I did it for several months, I was able to
work on personal projects, catch up on my favorite TV shows and video games, all
while studying engineering. But the issue with doing a sleep pattern like this is
life kind of gets in the way. Classes, work, even your social life. How
are you supposed to take a nap every four hours? But now that I'm my own boss,
I finally have the freedom to actually be able to set my own schedule and try
it again. Which is why we're building this thing.
The ultimate sleeping pod. It's called The centralized automatic sleeping pod
with enhanced revitalization or Casper for short. And no that's not coincidence,
the mattress company Casper has actually sponsored this project to help bring my
dream to reality. We're essentially trying to take as much sleeping
technology out there and stuff it all into a steel box,
or a unified sleeping system Yeah James came up with this idea a
couple years ago, he said he always wants to spend more time in the garage. He just
never wants to leave, so I guess sleeping in here is the next step. Sleeping pod idea seemed okay but now it's definitely gotten a little weird. I
think you might be going insane Jordie! Oh we're going now, okay, hi mom!
I've been here for a couple months now and I should start listing off incidents. First there's a shopping cart incident, and then there was the lightsaber fire.
I honestly don't know how these two guys are still alive. So the only time
I've seen James sleep well is during class and we're not in school anymore.
But this one time in school he he took it to a whole new level and brought a
cot into the classroom and then slept in a linen closet.
I think that worked out pretty well for him, but yeah I mean this is a bit more
extreme. I have a hard time saying that because I think it was my idea. Yeah it's a pretty weird project. I don't
really know much about it I just go to the gym with James. I've been working with James for a while now and he
definitely had some weird perks sometimes he'll be totally oblivious to
everything that's going on... dude hopefully once he starts using this
sleeping pod he'll have more focus and won't be doing this anymore... why?! So we built a box, we added some drawer
slides, I'm going to throw a mattress in, it's got all kind of tech for sleeping.
Has he lost his mind? No, no, I don't think so I mean, I don't know I might be a
little biased. What's my experience working with James?
Which one's James again? Yeah we love'd the Reinhardt's rocket
hammer and the Captain America shield, you know the plasma rifle but this, this
is becoming too much. At this point this thing has more features than a Swiss
Army knife. Maybe we should put a Swiss army knife in it. *yawn* Well, after a few weeks of building,
many sleepless nights, the sleeping pod finally done. I gotta say it's a bit
uncomfortable. Luckily like I said earlier Casper actually sponsored this
project, so naturally they sent us a mattress. now the awesome thing with
Casper is it's a direct-to-consumer model which means you can only order it
online and you get to save quite a bit of money doing it that way
instead of going to a store where there can be markups and whatnot. The other
awesome part about Casper is they offer a hundred day sleep guarantee, so if you
don't like it within 100 days you can return it with no hassles. Plus free
shipping in both the US and Canada. It's the instruction manual. I did not read
the instructions. Oh there she goes Ya that's cool Night And if you want to get your very own
Casper mattress head over to www.casper.com/hacksmith and use the coupon code
Hacksmith to save $50 off of a mattress. Plus they'll know we sent you. All right, before I show you the features of the sleeping pod, I need a nap. That was a good sleep. So, let me tell you
about the sleeping pod features. So, as you already saw we have this tablet, which
you mount on the outside or bring it in with you. And we can actually control all the
different features of the sleeping pod and record all the sensors that we have.
One of the coolest features, which I think is probably one of the most
futuristic parts of this build is the mattress sensor, it can actually keep
track of your sleep, it knows what cycle you're in in your sleep pattern, and it
can optimize your wakeup time in order for you to feel as refresh as possible,
and it's also integrated in with lights to replicate a sunrise And of course the whole pod is climate
controlled using the smart thermostat. I have it set to 21 degrees Celsius right
now and it's currently cooling the pod. In addition we also have an awesome
pillow with Bluetooth speakers built right into it, and no that's not actually
for listening to music, it's for listening to binaural beats which help
you fall asleep. We also have sound dampening foam covering the entire
inside of the pod, which makes it super quiet while you're in there even if
there are people working in the shop. I can hear my heartbeat We've also got outlets complete with USB
charger so you can charge your phone. And you can also make your coffee. As we said before everything can be
controlled by the tablet, from the lights, to the thermostat. We've even got a
remote temperature sensor to make sure the pod is exactly the right temperature. The air actually comes through the foam
over here so it's nice and diffused so young getting cold drafts right in your
face. Plus in the winter we also have a heated mattress pad which the thermostat
can also control, but since it's summer we don't need it. Hey my coffee's done. Mmmm coffee. Plus mattress is super comfy,
the memory foam has been engineered to have just the right amount of support
and bounce, yet it's breathable so you can regulate your temperature. Anyways,
check out our vlog channel to see a full video of me sleeping in the pod. It's like ten hours long. Finally one of the
coolest and perhaps most eccentric features of the sleeping pod is our
oxygen enrichment system, and over here we have the oxygen tank hooked up to the
sleeping pod we have a wire with the control module right here and can be
controlled from the tablet itself. Some people report the enriched oxygen can
actually make you feel more refreshed and revitalized, so we've actually got it set
up so it's automated to release a safe amount of oxygen in the morning as
you're waking up to help you feel refreshed. Anyway, it's a new day time to
get back to work. Well I hope you guys enjoy the video. We
know it's a bit of a different project compared to what you're used to seeing
on the Hacksmith channel but it's been something I've wanted to do for a long
time. What would you do if you only had to sleeps for 4 hours a day and if you
had the sleeping pod what kind of features would you add? Let us know in
the comments below. Thanks for watching guys. And to see the pod in action don't
forget to check out our vlog channel where you see me sleeping for over 10
hours.
It's the Leatherman Tread.
