if you've been shooting your instagram reels with a smartphone so far and you're looking to up your game then the next logical step is to start using a dslr or mirrorless camera i'm stephanie and in today's video i'll show you how to shoot your instagram wheels with a dslr camera but wait there is more i'll also show you how to edit your instagram wheels in premiere pro afterwards if you're only interested in one of the processes then use the time stamps below and jump to your desired portion of the video if you're interested in both parts however then you're going to need three things a tripod a basic knowledge of video orientation and premiere pro fortunately i'm going to cover all three in today's video before we continue if you have any questions that i haven't covered in today's video for some reason then please send your questions in the comment section below and i will do my best to answer them as quickly as possible now let's start with the first part of how to shoot an instagram reel with a gslr if you have a dslr camera then you probably have a tripod already but if you consider buying a camera then you will absolutely need to buy a tripod for your maximum convenience so this is my dslr canon 90d i've placed it on my tripod horizontally at the moment this means that the camera will record videos in a 1920x1080 resolution this is the video format that you see on youtube but the instagram wheels need to be shot in a vertical orientation which simply means that the camera will record in 1080 by 1920 resolution so all i need to do is simply adjust my dslr in a vertical orientation by flipping it 90 degrees the tripod should give you the ability to do that easily then i turn my camera on i hit record and i start shooting my reel and that's it congratulations this is all you need to do to shoot your instagram wheels with a dslr now for the second part let's jump to my computer so that i can show you how to set up your instagram reel in premiere pro okay guys now i've uploaded my reel on my computer and i have opened up the premiere pro so we are ready to start new project here i'll just name the project test ig real with gslr it doesn't matter at the moment and i'm just going to click okay now that premiere pro is fully loaded and ready to go first thing we need to do is create a new sequence to match up with the resolution and frame rate that instagram uses for reals and this is how we do it we go to file then new then sequence you will see a bunch of different presets to choose from but the preset that we need is located under the folder digital slr and we look for the jclr 1080p 30 which means 30 frames per second i quickly want to point out why we choose 30 fps 30 fps is the optimal frame rate for the instagram reels regardless of whether your video is 25 fps 30 fps or 60 fps instagram is going to convert it to 30 fps so that's why we choose this particular preset you click on the preset only once and you go straight to settings the only thing that we are going to change here is the frame size so basically we're going to switch these two numbers so here i'm going to type 1080 and here will be 90 20. no other settings need to be changed in the future you're going to import many more wheels in premiere pro hopefully and it will be pretty tedious to change the orientation every time you open premiere pro so in order to avoid that tedious work we can simply save this custom preset by clicking on save preset and then we can name our preset in some meaningful way so that we know what the preset actually is so i'm just going to name it ig real 1080 by 19 20 30 fps and then i click okay and tada the preset is saved and every time you go to sequence it will be saved under the custom folder so it's already marked i'm just gonna click ok and the preset has been successfully loaded great work after we have created the right sequence we can import our reels i'm just going to import a test reel i made to the project folder here i'm just going to remove that folder and then i'm going to drag this clip to the timeline when this message appears just click on keep existing settings even though i've shot my reel vertically it's still gonna import horizontally but the fix is super easy you mark the clip in the timeline and then you go directly to rotate here rotation and then you click on the zeros and you just type in 90 which means that the clip will be rotated by 90 degrees and now it fits perfectly from here on you do whatever editing you need to do with your wheel cut color grade etc and when you're finished it will be time to properly export your video so that it matches instagram's criteria so how do we export it you click on file then export and then you choose media a new window with a lot of settings pops up and i'll go through the essential settings that you need to change one by one so no worries it's pretty easy let's start with format you don't change anything you keep the format as it is h.264 then the preset we don't change the preset we leave it as it is match source high bitrate this preset is the closest to the settings that we need our next stop is output name currently this is the name of the video and here in output you can see which folder the video is currently saved in if i want to change that name which i do i click on the name and then i choose the folder that i want the video to be saved in so i'm just gonna go to test real i'm going to rename this to something more meaningful like test igrill yeah that's that's really meaningful and then i click save and i can double check if the real has been saved in the proper folder and yes everything is okay our next stop is basic video settings here you just quickly need to check whether the resolution is correct 1080 by 920 everything's fine we don't need to change it then the same with the frame rate the frame rate should be 29.97 so we don't change anything okay then we check render at maximum depth for better quality then here we scroll down a bit more until we reach encoding settings honestly here under performance i just go with whatever setting premiere pro has chosen for me by default i haven't had any problems with hardware encoding so i'm just gonna keep it that way we will ignore the next settings until we reach bitrate settings here we select vbr to pass we need to set the target bit rate to the number two and then the maximum bit rate we need to set to number three and the last setting that you need to check is the use maximum render quality this one needs to be selected in my case it's already selected if yours isn't then just check the box and voila these are the only changes that we had to make the last step we need to do before we export this video is to save this preset with these exact settings so that we can easily apply these changes every time we export ig reels you click the save preset icon which is next to presets then you just choose a name for the preset something that will be understandable ig real 1080 by 90 20 30 fps and then i click ok and then this preset has been automatically selected but from now on every time you export another ig reel you can just directly choose this preset and all the settings will be automatically filled for you now it's time for our final step we click export this process takes a while but once the clip has been successfully exported premiere pro will notify you with a message here on the lower right corner and you can find your instagram reel in your desired folder now that you've successfully exported your instagram reel you probably want to transfer it to your phone this is easily done with free file syncing platforms like dropbox or google drive i personally use google drive because i can access every file from all my devices but you can choose any other platform that's more convenient to you if you have any questions please let me know in the comment section below i hope you found this tutorial useful and i wish you the biggest growth on instagram i'm going to post more instagram related topics in the future so subscribe to my channel to stay notified
