hey everybody it's math you up mr. domestic where we spread joy and positivity through sewing in fabric play this video I am going to show you how to sew an equilateral triangle an equilateral triangle is when all the sides are the same length in the angles the three angles are the same totalling 180 degrees geometry is fun this is I feel the easiest triangle to sew so if you're new to triangles this is the one to do and I'm gonna walk you from A to Z soup-to-nuts how to do it and you will go from having triangles to oh it's gonna be a pillow top when I get there the finished project these the height of them are three and a half inches and this is a free pattern it's called ambience or ambience this was larger equilateral triangles but you can also make this with this technique so get ready to have some fun get your equilateral triangle on and before we get into the content anytime you're enjoying this make sure to give it a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe to my channel keep it positive wait no that's in the end so the first part in this video I'm going to show you how to cut the equilateral triangles with some fabric and I'm making a project using the AGF at autumnal edition they have a new bundle up created bundles and this one is super duper awesome perfect for fall love these colors and I'm just going to show you with one of them you get a print that's easy to see for y'all that doesn't make you go like cuckoo in your eyes you can't put this one right here okay I'm just gonna open it up and for the pillow top that I'm making I'm using three and a half inch strips so the height of the rectangle not rectangle triangle triangle geometry yes but is going to be three and a so I'm just gonna make a strep man three and a half right here it's gonna wonky even it up there take my rotary cutter and then just cut that's three and a half inch track and it's not iron so it's not perfect sorry about that but from here what you do and this works with any size that you choose of an equilateral triangle so you need to have a ruler that has a 60 or a thirty degree angle on it because an equilateral triangle all three of the angles are 60 degrees that's why all three sides are exactly the same so let's start here okay so that's the 60 degree line and I'm just going to slice here right there there's one and it's also easier whenever I made the entire pillow I think I did five what's this called strips together and so I was able to cut a bunch of triangles at the same time but I just want you to see the basic motion so make sure to line it up right there cut see that's one and just flip it back and forth and back and forth and some will be upside down so if it's a directional print just see that one's wrong I almost cut it see pay attention because I was on the 45 so I need to make sure to get on the 60 30 angle like this and as long as you get like right on the point and you make sure to match this up it should be good to go and then you just continue continue continue right here one more and what I found when doing equilateral triangles because they're kind of easy-peasy this so which I'll show you that even if they're slightly off it's totally fine fabrics forgiving so it's like a millimeter off it's no big deal just keep going I think y'all are getting the gist of it the hardest part is making sure that go they also have like equilateral triangle rulers which I've used before but it's not necessary to go out and buy it you can use a regular or if it's got this this angle on it and tada tada so I think you get the gist of how to cut them but see look boom it's the thing which way which way which way so why I joked about that is whenever I'm sewing them up I'll put these aside he doesn't have these randoms here what I'm sewing them up I want to make sure that the grain of the fabric so the grain right that's going along the grain as opposed to the bias it will just make the overall project stronger so I make sure that the grain is on the bottom and the top so here's one it's not the grain no see how it stretches boom boom boom boom boom boom so this is the grain and here's another one I know that that one is the grain but see stretch those make this whole seam sturdy and then it'll be directionally the diagonal will have some stretch which is normal fabric right so then you just line these up making sure that like that and then now you can see how I lined up all of the triangles for my project and then I just sewed up each row going from top to bottom and I have left the bottom one for you to have as your example so I'm going to show you how to so that was that so all the rows you can do over to this I've already stitched up one two three four five of these rows and I've left the sixth row raw and open and I'm going to show you how I stitch these together to make it super duper simple and then how I press it in iron in the end so let's go over to Tim Gunn for some selling action ok the first thing is to see I stacked them up making sure that they stayed in the drawer direction they're supposed to because I do have the grain on the top and the bottom of the triangles as I said before that just makes it easier to sew so now let's get our stitch on and I don't know where my quarter-inch butt is so we're kind of estimating it but I'm estimating it the same and all of it so it's roughly a quarter of an inch so just so you can see these first two let me pull them here ok so these two are the first two so you want it to stitch like this and these are equilateral triangles so regardless of how you have them they're going to all match up so I flip it this way because this is the grain how you can tell boom it doesn't stretch this one which stretches stretches on the bias so I flip it over like this and then they all match up see because equilateral they'll just go here and I'm just using that right here as my marker for everything and I think it's a quarter of an inch if you have a quarter inch but it makes it a lot easier okay this one was like obvious okay so you just set up the side open it tada like this and then this is where it gets super duper fun and I have found you see if I can explain this this is the new one going on so I want to match this one up to this one so I am going to finger press this like this and match it up to where these triangles are even I don't open the back seam I just move it over and that's how I know what the next one is going to be is I just move it over so that these two that I'm stitching are flat hopefully it makes sense as I continue to let me get this one okay so just so you can see it boom see that's how that works stitches let me back it up a little bit so you can see some more so let me try to explain this hopefully you'll be able to see it but this one with this I have the option of pressing the seems to way I can press it this way which would fold over this fabric or I can press it this way and as you can see on the back this one is flat this is the way that I want it to be so that I can add the next one both of the triangles that I'm sewing together I want to be flat and this will make sense probably if it doesn't make sense at this point it'll make sense better whenever I press them all but I'll leave a couple of these in real time so that you can see where I'm talking off see this one's done and so this one I want to be flat I'll show you once again this to overkill this so you understand this one is the one I'm going to show the new triangle on to so I have the option of pressing the seams this way which doesn't have this one flat or pressing the seam that way and as you can see this entire triangle is what that's why I want it to be flattened that I'm going to add the next one like this see see right there how it's flat okay I'll do one more after this and really and so this one's done just do one more when I just show you here when it flat so it goes this way and if you wanted to iron in between each step go for it so that you don't have to finger press but I'm lazy I don't want you I'm all about efficiency and finger press and works for me pass me a quarter and now I'm going to fast forward the remaining you can slow this down if you want to continue to watch just a fast-forward here [Music] you [Music] you so now I'm going to show you how to prepare joining this trip to this trip to try and get those points as crisp as possible so I'm going to move these four out of the way and then just focus on these and for this I'm gonna get my ironing mat bring this to the party and this one was on top this one was on top right so what I match up are these points because as you can see like it's human we're all human right so all of this isn't going to be perfect but if you want those points to be like point delicious then that's where some glue comes in I like this it's washable so as long as you have a washable glue it's good to go and I always will glue based like right here and I put two dots on either side and then what I want to see right here is I match up those points I don't know if I can show you that on the right here I'm trying to show you let me see if I can it's all gluey but see right here this is what I'm doing I'm finding this point and this point and then I want the points to match boom boom boom boom boom boom boom there's only kind of awkward holding it like that but now that you've seen it and then I'm going to heat set it one two three four five I think that's enough to meet it and I am going to do that for every one of these intersections making sure that the glue is on this side of the seam allowance and then I focus on matching the points don't the minute them tada because the points are what you're after and right here I'm striving to be as best as I can but once again I don't strive for 100% perfection I strive for 95% perfection so I recognized in that that some of these points aren't going to be perfect so if that's your jam then maybe find another way most of them will be awesome I promise so I'm gonna pass forward gluing the others and then I will take it over to my sewing machine this back over to Tim Gunn and this is where if you have your quarter-inch foot this would have helped I still can't fly but I've been like important but as long as this is the same as all of your other seams then you can just follow that and it should catch the points at the perfect spot and this is where if you want to be extra about it and make sure that they are all like perfection then it will take a lot more time and I'm all about like being done and being finished so this is how I do it my stitch all the way through okay no I will take this back over to my pressing mat and open the seams for ya okay so now I am back over at my pressing mat and this is the final thing that I'm gonna show I have my iron here and these seams I am going to open I have found that by opening them it makes the points more crisp but one thing is you put some glue here so you've got a finger open all of these that's why I only use a little dab and I made sure to use a washable one because the beauty is permanently you won't be able to open it and you'll have to press it to the side it would still be cute but it wouldn't be following like what I told you to do [Laughter] so let me finger over one more just so that you can see get my iron make some steam happen don't burn my fingers okay and I'm gonna fast forward ironing all the seams open and then I will flip it over and then we can all clock my points to see how they are whether they fit into that ninety five percent threshold so I'll see you back in a second [Music] okay now back to real time I'm gonna flip it over oh yeah they do one final press and because those seams are pressed open it really opens up those points where you get the full pointage the point elation the pointa fication and then let's flood I'll even get up close are you scared look look at those points look at those points I definitely get myself 95% this is like a 98 percent IRR so boom boom I'm not gonna show you something the rest of them if you need to so see it again then like rewind and watch it again but I think that we're good with this tutorial so hmm now you can so an equilateral triangle project like a boss seriously it adds like a little bit of edge and like la la to a pretty basic quilt design and what you could do whether you do a gradient or a distinct pattern in it it's going to be bomb calm so if you enjoyed this video got a laugh or a tip or trick or two make sure to give it a thumbs up [Music]
