on today's flip I'm tackling this Old School Cherry buffet that I found on Facebook Marketplace buffets sell really well for me this time of year around the holiday season and this guy is in pretty good shape I'm hoping it should make her a fairly easy flip let's go [Music] hi I'm Kara with lemons to Lemonade Furniture I'm a crazy busy homeschool mom who hates credit card debt and does everything I can to stay out of it and that means flipping Furniture come join me out in the garage and I'll show you how it's done our newest rescue pup Phoebe has joined me out in the garage today to help me with my latest Furniture flip the first thing we need to do to this guy is give it a very good clean I'll use some simple green to take off all that dirt and grime prep work is the most important thing that you can do to a piece of furniture before you start painting foreign normally it's a good idea to take your Hardware off before you start cleaning but I'm going to reuse this hardware and the hardware itself needs a really good cleanup so I'm going to clean everything at once and then I'll take the hardware off and go back over the fronts of the drawers it's always really important to clean out your piece on the insides as well so I like to take the vacuum to mine to get out any dirt and cobwebs and now the hardware is going to come off foreign you see these dated details right here after close examination I can see where there's two nail holes and one of the little nails is sticking out so these are removable I'm going to use my little screwdriver and just gently pry these off and this will help update the piece a little bit so it doesn't look so dated [Music] I have an idea for this but it in quiet requires me to strip the top of this Buffet I have to be really careful when I strip and sand this Buffet because it has a really thin piece of veneer on the top and I'm going to show you how I know see that this is a piece of wood here but then this little colored part here is the veneer that lays on the top so that's all the area I have to strip and sand and if I burn through this this is going to show and it's not the same color it is not this Cherry mahogany color it's going to be a different color so I have to be really careful [Music] I'll use some chemical stripper to start removing the finish on the top I'll link the brand that I like to use the most in the comments down below you'll always want to make sure that you're wearing some gloves I like to wear my mask and have plenty of ventilation when I use this product I also use a chip brush to spread this all around [Music] [Music] foreign stripper is on I like to cover the top of mine with some plastic wrap to help keep it moist and activated because I live in Texas sometimes this stuff dries up quick and it doesn't have the full activation time that I need it to have so this plastic wrap just helps ensure that it keeps working and doesn't dry up on me foreign [Music] stripper sit for about two hours I come back out to the garage and I'll pull back half of the Saran wrap at a time I like to do this part in small sections [Music] foreign [Music] once I've scraped back all of the kremical stripper I'll use some mineral spirits on some steel wool to deactivate the stripper and help remove any of the extra product buildup [Music] now that I've let the buffet dry overnight it's time to start sanding I have to start with a high grid because I've got that thin piece of veneer on there so if this was solid wood I'd be able to start with something closer to like an 80 or 120 but because I'm dealing with something that's so thin I've got to start with more like a 240 220 a 240. I'll probably only work up to like a 300 a 320 so just so it feels nice and smooth on the top but I'll have to go really slow with the 240 first just so I don't bust through the veneer on this foreign [Music] now that my top is done it's time to work on the bottom [Music] lifting up I don't want to rip this off because I'm going to sand this down and use stain on this and I don't I don't really like sustainable putty it doesn't work that well for me if you know a solution to that let me know because I haven't found anything that works yet so I'm going to use a little a paint brush and some wood glue and glue down these trim pieces that are lifting up foreign [Music] [Music] I'll leave the wood glue to dry on the bottom and I'll give a light scuff sand to the drawers and the body of the buffet [Music] foreign [Music] now that my wood glue is dry I'm going to use my surf prep sander and remove the Finish from the bottom of the buffet I don't need to use a chemical stripper for this part because the bottom already has a failing finish which means that most of the Finish is already flaking off or it's easy to remove with a sander that I don't need to do the extra step of using the chemical stripper the bottom of this had so much more damage on it than I thought that it did once I took my sander to it and got down to the bare wood so I don't like to use stainable wood fill but I went to Sherwin-Williams and they did recommend this one I've tried some others they didn't work well for me in the past and so I'm a little nervous it's my whole idea hinges on staining the top and bottom of this one last wipe down before I can start to paint this Buffet required a lot of prep work but I'm excited for you to see the end result you are not going to recognize it when it's finished now that I've done all the hard work to sand down the top and the bottom I'm going to make sure I do a good job covering this up before I start to paint the body of this Buffet foreign pigmented shellac primer from Sherwin-Williams since this piece is mahogany it will most definitely bleed through any paint that I apply so my primer is going to make sure that that doesn't happen I'll load this into my gravity fed HVLP spray gun and apply two good coats foreign foreign [Music] my latest order from surf prep came in and I'm going to use the medium grit squishy pad on my 3x4 Ray sander to knock down any bits and bumps that my primer Left Behind before I can start painting on today's piece I'm going to be using one of the Lily moons opulent collection in the color Magnolia Garden Magnolia Garden is a Dusty sage green with gray undertones it is a beautiful color and goes well with any Home Furnishings Lily Moon's opulent collection is an all-in-one acrylic based paint that has a built-in stain blocking primer adhesion primer and a built-in top coat it is very much a three in one so as soon as I am done painting this I won't need to apply a top coat to it it already has one be sure to visit the Lily Moon website that I've linked below and use the coupon code lemons to save 10 on all of your orders foreign foreign okay fingers crossed I have no overspray that got onto my wood finish I've got two coats of my Lily Moon paint done and dry on my buffet and now it's time to work on the top and the bottom Here's my thought moving forward on this one um it's cold in Texas which really means it's like 50 degrees because I'm always cold which is part of the reason why I live in the south because I can't do cold weather so um yeah 50 degrees is cold for me anyways my thought process with this one I really love this natural top but I can't keep it like this because I have so many fixes that I had to do with wood fill on the bottom that it looks it's gonna look uneven I can't keep it like this I wish I could so I'm gonna go to my favorite standby Lily moons Gel Stain and we are going to Gel Stain this top and it's my two favorite Lily Moon gel stains together old-fashioned and natural cork and I went heavy on the old-fashioned see if I can show you with a smidge of natural cork in there because I want it more dark than light on this Buffet these Lily Moon gel stains are so easy to work with now that I've got my two colors mixed up in the bowl I'll just apply them let it sit for just a few seconds and then wipe it back it's going to help take out all of this orangey tone in the wood and make it a natural beautiful tone that's going to match this green paint below [Music] foreign that I was so concerned that I wasn't going to take the stain very well look how beautiful this Blended in Lily Moon gel Stains have a built-in top coat but since this is a buffet and it'll have a lot of use on the top I'm going to get an extra layer of protection with some Lily Moon Stellar Shield top coat Stellar Shield is an incredibly tough water resistant top coat that's easy to use it has low VOC and a low luster Sheen which is going to be perfect for the top of this Buffet I like to use my sponge applicator to apply this [Music] foreign the inside of the drawers need a little refreshing so I'm going to use my Lily Moon Furniture balm I have this in the scent Wildflower and my wax brush and we'll freshen up these drawers before it goes to its new home I really enjoyed the patina on the old Hardware once I got it cleaned off it's so pretty and sometimes it's easier when you have these Serpentine drawers to not put new hardware on this because sometimes they can be hard to fit so I like it when I find some Hardware that works the original Hardware still works with the piece on these curved drawers [Music] [Music] whew this project took a lot of time and a lot of prep work but it's totally worth it in the end look at this after [Music] I got my branding iron out that I purchased from Etsy so I can leave my mark I love the look of this new buffet buffet sells so well for me around the holiday season I wasn't surprised when we had multiple offers on this shortly after I listed it and it's already gone and off to its new home thanks so much for tuning in I'm so glad you shared this time with me if you like content like this
