in this video i'm going to show you how to fix this and i'm going to show you how to fix it fast and we're going to do it right now [Music] so over on this wall i used to have my tv mounted here as you can see and when i took the mount off the wall it took some of the drywall paper and paint off completely and this is typical of if you have a cabinet against the wall and a lot of times when it's cocked in it'll rip the the paper right off um even if you have a picture that's been hanging on the wall for some time the humidity will get to it and that paint will kind of stick to the picture and you pull it off and this will happen so i'm going to show you how to fix this the fastest way i know how now before i get started if you wanted to you could just prime and paint right over this and you would just have a spot here that's scuffed up a little bit but it would be painted if you can live with that that's cool with me if it's cool with you but i'm going to show you how to fix this in a way where you won't even be able to tell that it was ever there so what i want to do in order to make this smooth is i want to take some joint compound and fill this in and sand it down but if i just did that what i've seen in a lot of cases is where this paper is that joint compound does not stick to this very well and it starts bubbling and blistering up and it does not look good so in order to prevent that from happening i'm going to use this bin shellac base primer now you can use a couple different things uh zinser this company actually makes something called guards which works well for this there's an upside and a downside to using this stuff this stuff because it is a shellac based primer it dries really quickly it dries to the touch within 15 minutes and then you can mud over it in about 45 minutes with the other stuff the guard stuff it takes pretty much a day before you can put anything over it paint or mud but the downside to this stuff is it does smell kinda bad so make sure you are in a well ventilated area if you don't want it to stink and you're willing to let this take a little bit longer you can use that guards the latex based stuff it does not smell like this so step one i want to get rid of all of the loose drywall paper i'm just going to take a six inch tape and knife and get whatever i can here like this that's pretty good while i'm here i am gonna fix these little imperfections so this was a bolt that got pulled out so i just want to flatten that so the paper isn't poking through i want to go to mud this is that one good now another thing you can do if that knife doesn't get this completely you can see this fuzzies right here you want to take a utility knife and take a brand new blade and just score this along the top or wherever those quote unquote fuzzies are something like that you don't want to go too deep and then you can just peel that off that stuff off and if you wanted to you could go all the way around and do that same thing just to make a nice edge again you don't want to go too deep with that okay now if you have anything like i do like this you want to push that in a little bit so everything's nice and flat looks good now while you're doing this if you know that you don't have paint to match this while you're cutting that out it's a good idea to save a piece of that paint any good paint store will have this kind of paint gun that they can shoot at this and the computer will tell them exactly what color this is so you can match the paint up when you're ready to paint then you want to shape this stuff up really good that's another uh reason that i like using this stuff is because the ease of use it comes in a spray can mix it up really good i got some doors and windows open and i just want to cover any of the drywall paper that came off any of these brown spots and i might as well spray this stuff too now you're going to notice that this stuff is a little runny so i have a roller handy just to even this stuff out that's a dry roller i just want to even this out make sure it gets in all those little crevices there we go that's good now we'll let that dry okay it's been about 40 minutes and that is nice and dry and actually it doesn't smell as bad as i remember it smelling uh i just had the doors open for 15 minutes and the smell was pretty much gone so now we're ready to mud and what i usually like to use is this stuff right here usg dust control joint compound it's already pre-mixed that's why i like it but you need to let this dry for a day before you can re-coat or paint so what i'm gonna use is this stuff same brand usg easy sand five what the five stands for is that you have five minutes working time with this so after you mix it up or while you're mixing it up even you have five minutes to get it on the wall and to get it the way you like it to look and then it's gonna start curing uh they make different times so they have easy sand 20 easy sand 45 90. it depends on how much of a patch you have i have a very small one so that's why i'm gonna go with the five because the smaller this number the quicker it will cure and if you have a bigger patch i would suggest something like 20 because five minutes is not a lot especially if you have more than just this going on so let's mix that up so since i'm using such a small amount here i'm going to use a paint tray liner and be careful because this stuff does tend to get everywhere so remember this needs to be mixed quickly and it needs to be put on the wall quickly so we're gonna do it as fast as we can just mix it with water a bucket and a mixing wand would probably be a lot easier but again i'm only mixing up a small amount just want to get that nice and mixed up now you just take your mud fill that in just going to fill in everything else while i'm here you can see there are some crusties in here i probably could have mixed it up a little more or if i had 20 minutes i could spend a little more time mixing it's okay just make it as smooth as possible that all looks pretty good and if you are not the best at mudding the good thing about this stuff is it sets between 10 and 14 minutes so if you want to run another tight coat right over that before you sand you can do that if you can get it in one coat great so i ended up doing a second coat and i mixed it up nice and thin this time and the good thing is that was only 30 minutes for two coats and now this is dry and i can sand it out i got my tape with some paper to catch some of the dust so i'm just gonna use my sanding sponge and smooth this all out okay before i paint this let's talk about flashing uh flashing in terms of paint is when you have this wall completely painted you know i did this a year and a half ago or something like that and when you go and even take the same exact paint by the way i like to keep mine and label them um you can take the same exact paint and touch up a small spot like this but what's gonna happen is you're going to see that patch and the reason you see that patch is because of the difference in shine no matter what as time goes on the the sheen or shine of the paint changes and they put a brand new patch on an old wall like this you're gonna you're gonna notice that you might even notice it when you paint a wall and you might use the roller a certain way and the paint is more dry going that way you might see that that paint roll uh so it's a hard thing to do it's a hard thing to patch something like this the way to avoid that would be paint this entire wall and i don't want to do that and i don't think you want to do that so we're just going to uh do what we can with a roller and touch up this area and try and feather out the edges a little bit and i think that's going to be good enough so i'm going to mix up this paint and get to rolling now this is a paint and primer in one and i know some people don't like that so if you just want to prime it first and then paint it you can take that extra step right now i'm just going to use this i think for a small spot like this it's going to be just fine now i'm going to take a whizzy roller or a hot dog roller whatever you want to call it one of these mini ones and i'm just going to dip it in the paint because it's a patch i'm not worried about dumping the paint out i don't want to waste too much paint and then i'm going to take my paint tray liner and just kind of get this to a point where it's not too there's not too much paint on here but there's enough for that patch something like that let's paint it okay paint away now it's good to use the same kind of roller or paint brush or whatever you use to originally paint the wall match the texture of the paint that's already on there the roller's starting to dry up which i actually want this nice and even all the way and then i'm going to try and just now that the roller's a little dry i'm gonna feather in the edges just a little bit and i've seen people use a paper towel and just kind of dabbed around like this to stretch this out but i think this works just as well use less pressure as you go out and you're probably still going to notice it but i think it'll be a lot less noticeable doing it this way okay so that paint is fairly dry i think this spot is a little wet you can see it but this is where that patch was with the drywall the ripped drywall and it's perfectly smooth and you can see what i mean by the sheen if you look down this way you can see it but that's gonna happen and if you look at it like this it blends in really nice so there you go in a nutshell the process is scrape the wall clean it up prime it mud it mud it again if you have to sand it paint it done and that was all in less than two hours i'm sure there's different ways of doing this if you have a different way that works well for you let me know in the comments i hope this helped you out i hope you learned some stuff and uh yeah if you
