welcome back to vancouver carpenter the dry wateriest carpenter on the internet today i'm going to show you guys how to coat drywall the wrong way and uh some of you guys might be confused about this because you'd be like ben that's how i coat drywall it's fine you're such a jerk but no here we go i'm gonna coat it wrong and then after i'll tell you why it was wrong okay so quick scrape of the bubbles this is probably going to bubble i'm going to ignore it we're not here to talk about the bubbles so we got a patch right you want to go a little wider than you went on your tape coat feather your edges feather your edges [Applause] and then a few finished passes just to just to smooth it down okay it's looking good we're making good time next batch this is going great more mud hopefully i don't run out of mud at the bottom of my bucket we're going a little wider right it's good to go a little wider than your last pass i'm doing this exactly as i expect people to do it okay finish pass finish finish we're leaving a little bit on the sand so it winds up nice and flat okay oh it didn't make it all the way to the floor okay almost there that's not quite wide enough is it like we're not going to cover that tape if it's that wide okay we're getting closer let's just go a little wider if we don't want to see that we got to go a little wider [Applause] [Music] okay there we go three patches done good floated big should hide right wrong this was all wrong this is not how you coat drywall what you need to think of is like what i've just done is i've created three humps on the wall yeah they're pretty big and broad but guaranteed if i go put a straight edge across this there's going to be a dip in every single one of these so you don't coat drywall this way and this is what most people would do they go a little bit wider than their tape they go a little wider on the next pass and they're like there we go i did drywall finishing but what i've done here again is i've created three humps on the wall so let's get back to the bucket here and start applying this properly in a way that all of this will actually disappear especially when i'm coding on a wall with like three skylights here guaranteed you're gonna see no matter how big and broad these are if we don't fill in these spaces in between you're going to see every single one of these patches and that's the number one thing that people don't understand when it comes to like how wide do i go in my patches well it's not just how far away you are from your tape how far away are you from other patches in this case we have three patches and even one down here i'm gonna tie them all in because that's the only way you're ever gonna see it so don't think of this stuff as tape hider think of this stuff as liquid wall in order to hide that tape i'm going to apply a uniform layer of liquid wall over all of the patches so i've already got some mud on here and i don't have a lot in my bucket so hopefully we can get this done pretty easily so it's kind of splitting the line between like old-school plastering old-school plastering and you know hiding tape so this one i think can go to right about there because i've already floated that one pretty well now when patching when patching like three patches like a bunch of mole hills really shows up let's say you got to install the countertop on this thing all of a sudden you're going to see those three humps in the wall guaranteed oh we're getting low on liquid wall gotta give me a second to get the rest of this out of here i have just enough [Applause] that'll do this could use a little more a little more okay we're getting closer there we go we should be able to make it work with that yep yeah that'll do okay so start with the usual feather your edge better your edge i could use a little more then let's start let's get this down here a little bit more so the reason you want to start with feathering your edges i haven't explained it for a while is just so that you don't get left with some hard build up on the edges where it starts drying out should you not be able to get back to this in time for it to start drying up okay so let's explain this little bit real quick so i started with my first pass feathering the edge like that every pass next is slightly tilted the other way that's how we wind up more with lift-offs instead of tool lines but there might be some we'll clean it up in a minute [Music] so here we go uni patch [Applause] it's much different than eyebrows you guys the eyebrows you try and avoid that bridging the patching you want the uni patch okay we're close here a little feather into that patch it's pretty good honestly i'm at the stage where there's really no need for me to mess with it it's close enough one little thing right here now this is going to get a nice big sanding i mean i kind of don't like that but i mean i'm just fussing wrecked the whole thing by putting a big lift off right in the middle that you could see from these skylights either way that liftoff's gonna sand real easy i'm gonna sand the whole thing and what you're going to notice when this shrinks when this dries and shrinks you're going to see the high spots where the tape was so you'll see the patch right here you're going to see the patch right here you're going to see the patch right there and that's where i'm gonna do most of my sanding is over top of the tape because that way that part winds up flattened out and i don't over sand in the middle spots because otherwise i'm gonna wind up with the same thing i had which is a wavy wall so again i'm gonna focus on those spots where it's a little taller as it shrinks and dries and that is how to coat drywall correctly stop not uni patching you guys i'm tired and this is only the beginning of my day i have to actually go to work now this is my garage honestly i hope you guys are doing really well i hope oh look see there it goes it's starting to shrink as the tape's pulling out the moisture when this is done we're gonna see that whole thing is that registering on camera yep yeah we're gonna see that whole patch as soon as this dries out but now you guys know start applying that liquid wall uni patch style i hope you're doing really well i hope your project's going really well and i hope this video was useful to you thanks for watching vancouver dry watery carpenter until the next video see you guys [Music] thank you so i'm still filming yes
