How to Play The Trumpet Lick from "Dizzy Atmosphere"

[Music] hey folks welcome to trumpet tips and tricks with me Charlie Porter you can also visit me on the web Charley Porter music.com and if you like what you see on this video click the subscribe button and you'll be notified of any new videos that I post on my channel here today to talk about a really cool lick that Dizzy Gillespie does if you have not heard that recording you need to check it out because dizzy has a really awesome lick that he does actually it does a bunch of stuff that's really cool on that recording but there's one lick that he does that a lot of people don't do correctly they try to imitate it but they're they're not doing the little tricks that you need to do to really pull it off so I'm going to do it for you in slow motion really slow then I'll speed it up a little bit for you and then I'll do it fast and I've also taken the liberty of just writing this out for you um on the computer so as I'm playing it you can take a look at what I've written out the way to approach this at the very beginning is to just make sure that you get all the articulations right do the slurs and the tonguing where they're supposed to be and you'll notice that the slurring is in groups of three notes the first note of each one of those three notes should be heavily accented that is going to be the pickup into the next downbeat so that's one of the really cool things about this lick when it's done fast you're hearing the accents not on the downbeats but on the upbeats in fact on the triple let triple let triple let on the let of each triplet and that's one thing that gives it it's really cool rhythmic kind of dazzling effect as well as that alternate finger you got to make sure that you do that one and two to open alternate fingering okay so really slow the first time one two three so once you start to get it down at that tempo then we take a little bit faster 1 2 1 2 3 right and then once we get it at that tempo take a little bit faster 1 2 1 2 3 and if you're really brave you try it at the dizzy gillespie tempo 1 2 mm so there you go folks if you like this video please subscribe I got a lot more videos on YouTube where this came from and just remember where you heard how to do this lick trumpet tips and tricks with Charlie Porter thanks [Music]
