dust collection for small woodworking shops can be kind of confusing when you're first starting because you don't know what products to buy and what will actually work for small settings like garages like I'm in here and I hope this video helps you with that we're going to go through some of these products that I wish I hadn't known about when I first started Woodworking and one of them actually comes with a crisp $1 bill and we'll talk about why later but for now we'll hang it right here so we don't forget it the shop back is one of those tools that most Woodworkers buy first but before we get to that I want to talk to you about dust mask I think this is one of the most important things you can buy as a beginner a proper dust mask I like RZ mask you do your research figure out what you like I'll link to my favorite in the description as well as all the other tools you'll see in this video and I'll put them in the pin comments to help you find them easier now this is the RZ mask M2 I've recommended this multiple times on the channel I like it because the filter inside is replaceable and they come in nice colors I like this bright colored one they make red gray black whatever you like this is the M2 version they come out with the M3 version which I was not impressed with it has too many straps it's kind of gangly I just don't like it I like the M2 myself these work extremely well for keeping those fine dust particles out of your lungs but they only work if they're on your face if they're laying on the table saw or laying on the bench beside you and you're cutting it's not doing you any good put the mask on I'm talking to myself too now shop BS are probably the first dust collection thing you buy for woodworking I did maybe you did maybe you're fixing to I'm going to give you some tips on what to look for in a shop back that will work for woodworking because these aren't specifically meant for woodworking most of the the time they're mainly meant for cleaning up on rough construction jobs debris things like that or cleaning up wet spills or water floods whatever so that's what these are meant for but we can use them for woodworking if we do it right first thing you want to look for is the horsepower on these the higher the horsepower typically the higher the suction now this one has a 6 and2 horsepower Peak horsepower which means it's not going to run constantly at 6 and2 horsepower but it does have that ability to jump up there this thing is very sucky as the elf would [Music] say oh it's very sucky suck it pulls in a bunch of air flow and that's what you want especially if you're going to be using this on tools that are creating a bunch of fine dust table saws miter saws Sanders routers any of that kind of thing the problem with using this for woodworking is if you don't get the right accessory it ends up stopping up that filter and when you stop the filter up the air flow stops the motor's just running you're not pulling enough air flow to do you any good you're throwing sawdust in the air and it's just it's kind of useless at that point now if you can find one with a HEPA filter you want to do that because it'll filter out those point3 microns of dust before it gets exhausted into the air this one doesn't have a hea filter but it did come with a dust bag or debris bag but the one it come with isn't meant for fine dust so I picked up this set I got three bags for about $25 and this is meant for fine dust like drywall wood dust things like that that's going to really help help prevent this or the dust from getting back out in the air and it's going to prevent our filter from being stopped up so we're going to be able to have more suction longer with this shot bag these are very easy to install and this is actually a Craftsman brand bag but it says on the package that it will fit most shot vacs from 15 to 22 gallons so if you already have a shop vac with that capacity this may be the way to go but Amazon has a ton of different sizes out there so you can pick what works for you they pretty easy to install you're just going to slip it over the inlet port on the inside of your shop B back and let it snap all the way in place then you're good to go just make sure it's on the outer ring so it's not blocking that filter when you set the top back on there now what that back is going to do is again just going to keep that filter from getting clogged up however if you use this on a table saw a jointer a planer or miter saw that's creating a lot of dust you're going to f those bags up really fast right and you don't want to do that because those bags are $25 for three and you buy three bags a week that's a lot of money we don't want to do that there is another way to prevent you from filling those bags up and let's talk about it now remember the dollar this has to do with that before we get to the rest of this list if you are a woodworker and you like to keep track of your customer orders or your projects themselves we created this from our new tool company called Faith Valley Tools this is the Woodworkers Chronicle and what we've done here is we have a place for you to keep your customer quotes we also have places for you to keep up with your customers orders and that includes the material list the cut list all that stuff so you can reference back to this if you get a second order for the same product for instance if you got a commission build for a nice nice end table you build it for the first time for this customer keep up with that information in the chronicle you can reference back to that and build it again using the same cut list that way you can build it faster more efficient it just helps your business overall there's also places for sketches in the back as well as a profit and loss statement so you can keep up with your business check it out faith valy tools.com we also offer card scrapers a nice Square various other tools we're adding to the list as we can we're trying to build a business but we're doing it slowly come help us out Faith Val tools.com just for an example I'm going to use the table saw to cut MDF which is notoriously Dusty this stuff is terrible I'm going to cut without a shot bag connected and you can see all of the Dust flying everywhere it's coming out the exhaust Port it's coming off the blade it's making a mess and if you do that very often you're going to have that fine dust in the air and that's not good it's not healthy we want to try to contain that so hooking up the shop vac with that dust bag included I going to make the same cut and you can see that there's significantly less dust there's a little bit that's going to come off the blade on any table saw no matter what kind of dust collection you have hooked up but it's way way less and that's what we're trying to do is reduce the risk and the mess now before we get to the big tools where this will really shine is if you hook it up to a sander a router or other products that are making much less dust especially the sander that's creating a lot of that very very fine dust as you're finishing your product that's where this product kind of shines in my opinion this is the Rockler dust adapter kit it comes with several different adapter so you going to adapt them to multiple different tools no matter if you're using it with a router a sander or even a track saw something like that you can adapt this kit to your tool comes with its own hose 12T hose very nice quality hose actually and then it comes with an adapter that will go right into your shop back from there you can use the other end to adapt to whatever tool you're going to be using it with and this is where a lot of people ask me how do I adapt down to my sander because the shot V hose is way too big this is how you fix that you just turned essentially turned your shot back into something like a dust extractor which is what I use here at the workbench is my fesal dust extractor but those are extremely expensive and we can get away with doing it something like this for way less money and you're still getting really good dust collection a lot of air flow and through a sander if you don't know pulling that air through the sander not only helps collect the dust but it also reduces the heat if you reduce heat in friction then your sandpaper lasts quite a bit longer and your tools last longer because you're keeping those cool with the air flow so it does a lot of different benefits other than just dust collecting update on the Rockler dust collection kit I'm missing this piece as I stated and so I went on where I bought it at Amazon and started talking to Rockler about giving me a new piece or should I return this U they were pretty slow to respond honestly like took them a few hours the first time was pretty quick and then it was you know the next day and then they said they were going to ship me a part and but I didn't know when it was shipping or anything like that overall about 3 days to get the part shipped to me which honestly I should have just returned this and just bought it or had another one shipped so lesson learned next time if a parts missing I'll just return it but I was trying to give them the opportunity to basically just send the one part instead of me having to return it so anyway this part's on the way I wouldn't have any hesitation on um recommending this to adapt to your tools just check the box when you get it and make sure all the parts there if you're in the market for a shop back for dust collecting this one is really nice this thing has more suction power than my FAL dust extractor which is quite impressive this thing is pulling a whole lot of air through there I like that I think that's a good good deal it's 6 and half horsepower the only drawback is this thing is quite loud so it's one of those trade-offs dust extractors aren't as loud they also have Hep filtration and the bags and you can adjust the volume of air that's coming through there this is a one-speed fits-all I like having a dust extractor but if you're on a budget if you're just starting out something like this will work for a long time to come now if you want to collect the dust from something like planers jointers miter sauce table sauce even a CNC machine you have to be able to collect the big stuff before it goes into the shop back something like a cyclone separator you've heard of those before I just discovered this and this is called the mullet that's business in the front party in the back this is kind of a unique product I've had multiple people reach out to me and say hey you got to check out the mullet you got to check out the mullet I was like what that was 1990 what we don't need those anymore right but this is a really cool product that I'll link to in the description and it's a dust separator similar to a cyclone separator has a cyclone on top and the bin on the bottom will collect your dust now when you get out of the pack it does come with that dollar remember we're going to talk about why that is soon now this thing is really cool because it will adapt to any shot back and it attaches to the shot back so you can move them both as one unit that was really cool because before I had the dust right separator it's a big blue bucket and it attached to the shot back with an extension hose and the problem is you have to move them both and when you're moving them around they're getting tangled up it's a pain this solves that pain point and I like that this comes with everything you need to get it set up with your shop vac and your shop hose the two adapters when you get this you will have to cut the main pipe to fit but it comes with a sticker and tells you exactly how to line everything up and then you'll make your Cuts put it all back together and then when you slip this into your shop vac it is now attached from there you can connect your shot back hose and you're ready to roll we can hook this up to the table saw the planer or the jointer and start collecting those big chips one thing worth noting on this mullet this piece down here is is just an empty pipe but this te isn't actually a T it's an actually an elbow or 90° pointing up and the bottom doesn't open up so you're not worried about suction or anything right there it's just a 90 up through the mullet set up an assembly on the mullet was really fast just four wheels on there you screw them in then it comes with a wrench you tighten them up and then pretty much you cut the pipe to fit and you're good to go now on the top it does have a sight window to let you see down in there to see how full it is we can also see it because it's kind of translucent you can see on the outside where your dust stuff is but I do like that they put that window in there and that's also where you can clean it out so you just take the lid off and then you can just dump it this lid does have a Rubber seal so that it's keeping that dust in there where it's supposed to be now what the mullet is doing it's a cyclone separator on top and then the main collection buckets on the bottom you can see this spinning around up here the lighter dust is going up and into the dust vac but the heavier stuff you can see just spinning it can't go up because gravity is holding it down it's too heavy and then when you turn off your shop back everything that's heavy that was up here just falls down into the container and then once this container gets full again you can just empty it get back to work now this is something I wish i' have known that when I first started woodworking because I didn't have a separator a dust separator and I just continued to fill up my shot back over and over and over if you have something like this that will prevent that now there is an elephant in the room here we need to talk about especially if you're using it with something like this dw735x planer that's putting out a bunch of air volume because it has a blower inside or if you're collecting a lot of dust from any tool really because that dust is flowing through that pipe at such a rapid speed it's creating static electricity and this will knock the fire from you if you're not careful it does build up a bunch of static case in point it's very staticky right now I'm not sure if you can hear it popping how do you prevent static well this hose is the one that's basically creating or the friction inside this hose is where the static build buildup is happening you can take a piece of wire and wrap around this and just drop it to the floor a piece of bar wire like electric fence wire or anything like that and that will ground it and that should take care of your static problem or when you touch it you'll know it that's when you took care of the static problem and what happens when you don't have dust collection the hose blew off the back and walnut dust went all over my toolbox back here if you can see that if you already have a shop back and you just need a way to collect the bigger stuff this mullet is a very good option and I bought this and I've just been thoroughly impressed with how it's working how it's a self-contained unit how it attaches to the shop back I like the fact that it rolls with it I think it's just a good option for you if you are looking for something like this now one thing I did was I took my dust collector my big dust collector right back there I opened up my bin and sucked up all of this dust which is mostly MDF dust from making Mallet templates things like that on my CNC I basically emptied the bin using the mullet and now I'm going to see how the shot back faar not including all the other dust we were collecting with the planer and the table saw I expect that this filter is still very clean because we have the bag and we have the separator and I was right this looks like brand spanking new and that's what you want that's why this shot vac still maintains the flow or the suction pow is because your filter is not being stopped up and and hindering the suction it's good it's good it's good and because we we use the separator our bag is still relatively empty like there's very very little in the very bottom and that was from when we were using it with the table saw so if you're looking to preserve your dust bags and your filters and maintain suction power check out that mullet so why the dollar well mullet says you should use this to buy yourself a cold pot and reward yourself for registering their product I think that's a really cool marketing strategy and it's a real dollar too y'all I mean who don't take free money so actually the most a dollar cheaper than you thought it was I'm not sponsored by them it may sound like that I bought this because I had so many people recommending me try it and I know why they're recommending it now it's really a really a cool product so how loud is this thing versus a dust extractor well I've got my handy dandy decibel meter on my phone I'm going to stand about 3 ft away we're going to measure each shot back first ambient Ambient sound is 43 DB [Music] it's about 82 83 DB on the shot vac now the dust extractor at about 3 ft away so about 77 DB on the dust extractor not a ton really I thought it would be more than that but it still is quite a bit quieter so why would you choose use a dust extractor over a shot back one uh size this thing is massively big around it's going to take up a lot of space and that depends on what size dust extractor or shot back you get but I do like that the fesal dust extractors especially are kind of narrow and they do roll quite a bit better although this one does roll all right the festal is has bigger Wheels it just rolls better not that that matters for most people main thing is you can do things like this it has a Bluetooth button on there uh that I can use to turn the vacuum on and off it sounds simple but but I use it all the time especially if I'm using it with different track saws routers things like that you don't have to have it connected directly to the VAC or power it on separately and the fact that you can adjust the volume of air that you're pulling through there and it does have a plug switch where you can plug your tool directly into it so that it powers on automatically when you power on your dust extractor but more importantly it has a HEPA filter built in and it has that dust collection bag and I think they probably collect a little bit better dust collection although that's a tossup in a lot of people's book so I don't think that you could go wrong if you just want to get a shop vac with the filter and a bag especially the fine dust bag you'll be perfectly happy with that starting out there's really no need to spend hundreds of dollars on a dust extractor when you can get a setup like this for less than $200 for a really good shopvac with the bags probably less than 150 it's a really good option for you if you're just starting out if you do like dust extractors or the idea of one I recommend the festival probably the ct36 for most people I've got that under my miter saw it works well collects dust well pulls a lot of air I've just been very pleased with them and I've had them for several years in the shop there's a couple of things I will suggest about dust collection in a small shop if you can budget or if you start thinking about planning ahead you want to budget something for the future and first and foremost is an air filtration unit this is a lagona clean air I actually would probably recommend looking at either wind DeWalt makes one jet makes them you can get any of those Brands they basically all do the same thing and that is filter out those fine fine dust particles down to the3 Micron and this one is a three-speed I'll link to this one as well as a couple more I recommend so you can check out which one's in your budget but it has two filters in it one on the outside in the back and one on the inside and that really does keep the really really fine dust out when I'm sanding using the table saw the CNC that one's running it's circulating the air and it really has reduced the amount of fine dust I see in the shop if you're looking for a fullsize dust collector I have this P flux one from lagona what I would do if I was doing things differently now is I would probably look really heavily at a I've done my research I've read up a bunch of them and I watched a bunch of reviews and I've talked to Woodworkers who have onid systems and I really think that's the option I would go with if I was going doing it again not to say that this one isn't bad or it doesn't work it does what it's supposed to I just think I would prefer the Onida over this one for a few reasons one I think the suction power could be better on this one I think the Onida has better suction with their supercell technology they've got going on just some really cool stuff they've got that I think beats this one out but that's just my person personal opinion another dust collection secet that most people don't talk about is just the old Leaf blow it seems dumb but I get a lot of questions like how do you keep your shot so clean the leaf flower after the projects done I'll raise the garage door and I'll put on my RZ mask and I will use the leaf blower to blow out the loose dust not a perfect system but it works do you use Leaf blow if you like this video on Dust collection I have another one that goes through the bigger stuff like that big dust collector all the pipes pieces you would need if you were starting a dust collection system uh with a big dust collector so click that box click in the Box get you the big old veral fist bump I got a mess to clean up
