Woodworkers have a big problem more and more places are restricting or Banning many of the oilbased finishes that we've counted on for generations for their durability and Beauty if they aren't going after the finishes themselves they're going after the solvents and the thinners that are required to use the finishes I used to think this was just a California thing but now my home state of Michigan Ohio pretty much all of Canada and a lot of other places have begun cracking down on even simple things like mineral spirits which is an essential component of polyurethane and other wiping varnishes basically anything with voc's the dangerous organic compounds that are in the fumes have been under attack for some time and it won't be long before it becomes impossible to get good oilbased finishes so I've spent quite a while looking for a quality low or no VOC alternative that's easy to apply that doesn't look and feel like plastic that's easy to maintain p and that's safe to use without a respirator basically I want the Holy Grail of wood finishes and I think I may have found it now I want to start by saying this is an entirely new finish to me it's called clean armor I doubt many of you have ever heard of it much less tried it it was invented by an entrepreneur from Georgia named Matthew Springer and it's sold by a small business in Canada called my wood cutters.com which is someone I've worked with for years as many of you know I always do whatever I can to help small businesses with great ideas like this so I started working with clean armor and I'm so excited about the results because I think this has the potential to be an absolute GameChanger and not in YouTube's everything's a game changer kind of way this is something that absolutely can change how we finish wood now I know that's a big statement so let me just justify it by giving you the highlights really quickly then we'll take a closer look first this finish cures in 2 minutes not just dry to the touch fully cured Rock High protection in 2 minutes per coat that alone blew me away then I learned it also contains zero dangerous voccs and it has virtually no smell at all I can safely put this on in the middle of the house if I wanted to without a mask or a respirator and no one's going to complain about the smell it adheres to itself so if you ever need to fix a scratch or something down the road you don't have to strip it off or scuff it with sandpaper so that things like polyurethane would adhere to it but it's also among the most durable finishes I've ever seen I'll show you some tests that will blow your mind at the end of this video as you'll see it's simple to apply with either a cloth as I'm going to do or with a brush you can even spray it though I'd wear a respirator when I spray anything if those points alone don't convince you that the phrase GameChanger is no exaggeration in this case wait until you see me test it I'm going to wipe it on because it's easy to do you can't mess this up I'm starting with the gloss Sheen but I'll also show you the satin now depending on the type of wood you're finishing it may soak up the first coat a little bit they do make a thinner sealer that you can apply first so you let that soak into the pores until they're saturated then you'll use less of the thicker more expensive finish on your next coats but I'm just doing it all with the full strength finish so I don't have to use two different bottles I put the first coat on a little bit heavy then I wipe off the excess after it has had a couple minutes to soak up all at once this stuff is self-leveling but I still like to be sure I go over it very lightly with the grain to be sure it's evenly distributed that's key because of how fast this stuff cures you want it even and if a thicker coat is more difficult for you to apply evenly just put on a thinner one you can even add 10% alcohol to make it into more of a really thin wiping varnish if that's what you like now you may be wondering how a finish that cures in Just 2 minutes allows me the time to apply it like this that's because it only cures under direct UV light I've got a handheld one here you can buy these in the same place you get the finish I actually have some large full-size UV lights that hang above the table in my finishing room but a handheld light like this is a good way to start out and it's also Al good for small projects or for getting under and inside cabinets or the like now remember I applied the Finish under regular lighting I turn on the UV light when it's time to cure unlike other finishes you won't see any change in appearance as it cures it'll keep its Sheen and continue to look wet but after about 2 minutes you can touch it and you'll see it's fully cured and ready for another coat can you hear my fingernails on the surface you would never do this with just about any any other finish without letting it at least dry overnight and polyurethane takes a month to fully cure but think of the implications of a 2 minute drying time per coat not only does that completely change your finishing process when it comes to the overall time it's going to take you but it also allows almost no time for the dust to settle out of the air onto your wet surface and leave those little nibs in the Finish now in my case I didn't pre- ra the Grain and it it did swell up a little bit so I a light sanding with 400 grid after the first coat but in many cases you shouldn't need to sand between coats that is a big deal when you're finishing large projects now my second coat goes on much thinner this stuff isn't cheap but it's 100% solids everything in the bottle stays on the surface as protective finish there's no evaporation At All by comparison a can of polyurethane can be up to 75% solvents that evaporate away while only 20 25 to 30% of it stays on the project as actual protective finish so a quart of this stuff will cover as much as three times the surface area as a quart of poly keep your UV light at least a foot away like I said I don't usually do this by hand my ceiling mounted lights are about four or 5T above my finishing table two or three coats is usually enough and this is done you shouldn't need to buff it out if it were a piece of furniture I could deliver and install this right now it won't stink up the house it's ready for normal wear and tear it is really amazing stuff on the left of your screen is the gloss Sheen and on the right is the satin they also have a matte version and you can mix two different Sheen together to get a custom look like something between satin and gloss or between matte and satin but what about durability obviously I can take a screwdriver or something and gouge this just like any other finish I'd comp comp its hardness to a good quality polyurethane or even a lacquer but Stefan over at my wood cutters.com did some chemical tests to show you just how durable this stuff is first he tried acetone which is virtually guaranteed to wreck just about any finish out there then he dumps on some lacquer thinner and a little alcohol in case you're a big drinker who spills a lot and finally water in case you're planning to use it for countertops even after several minutes none of the surfaces showed any damage at all and remember this was fresh finish he was testing this piece uh is sprayed here in first half is in matte and then the other half in gloss that's amazing to me especially the acetone I wish I had this stuff when I did my wooden countertops in fact the version I use is called 757 tabletop finish but there are other versions too the 710 sealer is for the initial coat if you want to use it but it's not required the 700 is your standard clear finish the 705 is for outdoor projects and they also have a green filler that can be tinted and used as an undercoat now I realize this won't be for everyone because it's more expensive than other finishes even though you do get three times the coverage but I think the benefits far outweigh the cost how much is your time worth for example how much do you hate sanding between coats do you have limited space for drying do you share your drying space with your regular workshop and so you have to get that stuff out of there so you can continue to work do you need something without harmful fumes and odors this solves so many problems try a sample on a project and let me know what you think in the comments I'll put a link to it below this video see you next time
