we're losing our sanity and betraying our companions that's right it's betrayal legacy from Avalon Hill this updated version of the popular haunted house Hunt pits three to five players as generational family members exploring a haunted estate over the course of 300 is similar to the core game players investigate the house gaining power and encountering all-men's until the hot occurs where one player potentially betrays the rest of the group and friendships may be ended in this new legacy format gameplay is streamlined and new abilities items and story elements can now carry over from game to game look I love it set up for betrayal legacy requires each player to choose a family card which includes the starting statistics of the character they will play they then choose a figurine and place it into their matching color base write a first name and age in the topmost field and introduce your character to the rest of the table after a card has been selected the owner attaches a plastic clip to the starting value for each of the four attributes sanity and knowledge the mental traits and might and speed the physical traits guess which ones I've got I might take the for starting tiles and place them on the table with some distance between them then unwrap and set aside the legacy deck without shuffling it open the starting deck and sort the item and event cards into their respective decks then set aside the monster and trader cards for now as well as the tile planks and purgatory decks don't look it up yet finally read the tap card of the legacy deck and follow the instructions throughout your consecutive games known as a campaign the legacy deck will provide you with directions for progressing your story and revealing components of the game I won't spoil the details of the legacy deck but your characters will start to explore the various levels of the house and possibly its exterior the game has four regions ground floor basement upper floor and outside as tiles are revealed and played they are connected via doorways and considered adjacent for the purposes of movements after the legacy deck provides instructions for your game setup gameplay is divided into turns during which a player moves through the house and explores new rooms or interacts with established objects or creatures in the game during their turn a player first refreshes any used items to unused and then gains moves equal to their speed during their turn a player may move through the house spending a move for every room they leave when moving through a doorway to an empty space pull a tile from the stack if its region on the back matches the current region the player is exploring connect it by aligning doorways if the back does not match bury it in the stack and repeat the process until you find a tile matching that region placing and entering a room for the first time is called discovering when discovering a room resolve any symbols on the lower right corner of the tile from left to right by drawing a card from the appropriate deck after which a player may take actions decks include event cards omen cards and item cards event and item cards may be drawn from the deck and resolved if they match the region the players in if not bury it and draw until the right one is found read the events and resolve it before taking actions events may change the components of the game or stay in play for different durations some items in betrayal legacy have spaces for sanding stickers once per game when drawing an item card with an heirloom space the player must choose to heirloom it immediately or the moment is lost omen cards and item cards are acquired and placed in front of a player unused straight up when using rotate the card 90 degrees players can reset these cards at the beginning of their turn when drawing an Almond card after resolving its text the active player will make a hot roll roll dice equal to the number of discovered omen cards in front of all players depending on the displayed legacy card the roll results determine if the haunt begins more on that in a second as players explore the house various ancient tomes haunted halls and special events may raise or lower a character's traits players can take damage decreasing their value or gain in power increasing their value before the haunt occurs the lowest any value can be is critical which is the space just above the skull after the hunt begins values can hit the skull it's any single trade of a player hits the skull they died it was the breaks kids additionally some cars require a trait check which allow the player to roll a number of dice equal to that trait value the cards text determines the outcome based on their role after a player has drawn from the omen event or item decks their movement ends for the turn depending on their location and the status of the game players can also take actions either printed on the tile or available to their character actions are listed in all caps on cards and generally include options like search to discover a secret drop to put an item down take to pick up a dropped item and more the action with some nuance attack can only occur after the hunt begins players may make an unarmed attack using their might or an armed attack using a weapon when making an unarmed attack both the attacker and the victim roll their might value in number of dice whomever's result is lower takes damage equal to the difference weapon attacks can use other traits and provide bonuses to their attacks as well some ranged weapons require line-of-sight meaning the attacker requires a straight line of open doorways to make a distance attack at their victim additionally failing such an attack means the attacker doesn't take any damage from the roll now the hunt once the hot begins the game usually splits the players into two teams the heroes and the trader follow the instructions in either the secrets of survival or the traitors tome for details of the story and gameplay both books contain public information which all players know regarding the story and some of the conditions of the haunt however there's also information available only to each team and must be read in separate rooms generally the trader learns their secrets and objectives alone but that's what it's like to be the villain it's lonely you know Dan depending on the outcome of the hunt each book will have a special text to read and provides instructions for your next game as games progress characters will pass along items new rules can be added
