in this video i'm going to show you how to picture frame a deck and we're going to do it right now [Music] so when i say picture frame what i mean is here's my deck and the traditional way of installing decking is to just go straight past the deck a little bit and leave i usually leave about an inch overhang and that's the traditional way but i'm using composite and this doesn't look great it's going to be like this the whole way if i do it like that and for a picture frame instead of having this you can get these pieces that are fascia pieces and you can put it on the side and have a nice clean edge so this would butt up to here and leave a little gap and it would go from here to 45 here and all the way around that's a picture frame but before i get into it i'm gonna have to do some prep work so on the sides here where i'm attaching this decking it's gonna be probably about right there i'm gonna leave an overhang of an inch and three quarters because i'm gonna be doing some trim down here and then i wanna have my one inch overhang so since it's going to end right here and my piece is going to come in like this i'm going to have nowhere to attach that so what i want to do is do some blocking i'm just going to take a 2x4 and block this in the entire way and do the same thing on the other side the front i don't have to do anything because i'm going to have these joists right here so it's going to be about like that i can attach it right here and then these other pieces i can attach to the joists [Music] if i can sneak this in there i'm gonna attach it with these big ledger locks these things are awesome so [Music] solid now when i put my outside piece here this piece will sit just like that and i'll have a place to screw to now i'm gonna use some flex tape uh and seal up this area for two reasons one that is a large area for water to collect and sit there and pool up and cause issues in the future the other reason is this gap all the way along here and in between i'd rather see black than c pressure treated maybe a little nitpicky but the big reason is to waterproof this so water doesn't collect in here [Music] nice now i can do the same thing on the other side all right all sealed up on both ends and one more thing this copper flashing uh again i'd rather see black if there's a gap there i love using copper for how it can stand up to the elements but i don't like when it shines nice and bright right through the gaps in the decking okay i want to take my three pieces that i'm going to use for my picture frame and i want to cut a notch into one side of them so the front here i obviously want to keep like this that's the point but on the other side they don't make it so that one side has a notch so i'm going to do it myself with a table saw so that way instead of having to put two screws in here on the face of this i can have a notch back here and do the hidden fasteners of course if you're using pressure treated or a different type of material you can just nail it into place or screw it into place as you wish but you can use hidden fasteners with this material so i'm going to take advantage of that the decking that i'm using is called fiber on this is nantucket gray and i got it at home depot all right we're in my basement where we can actually talk in silence and i have my boards laid out the way i want them just a couple things to keep in mind um with my boards here they have writing on one side of them so that's annoying um so make sure you put that on the inside obviously so you don't see it and another thing and this is totally a preference if you're using composite and this wood grain uh goes a certain way so if you want and this is the same with doing the deck boards if you want them to all to go the same way if you want them random or if you want them every other that's up to you i'm gonna make it so so this grain see if you can see it kind of looks like it has an arrow going this way so what i'm going to do is put that arrow and continue it so it goes like this all the way around and that's totally a preference that's up to you but i have these laid out because uh it's just easier for me to tell exactly where i want to make this cut so i want to make a notch all the way down right there on the inside of all these boards i have my table saw set for that notch where it's important is the bottom here because my clip is going to go in just like that and tie the two boards together if you want you can try it on two smaller pieces and make sure it works cool let's rip these down of course they made it so that this is just bigger than a saw blade so i'm gonna have to move that fence over just a little bit and notch out just above here remember the bottom is the important part there we go you can see they're even on the bottom nice okay we can finally start decking and what you want to do is cut this end at a 45 measure the size of the deck and add whatever you want for an overhang add that measurement and mark it down here and cut that at a 45 this way [Music] [Applause] [Applause] oh that's a little dangerous i have my board in place here with the 245s and i have my inch and three quarter piece just to make sure these line up that side's good and that side's good now i can notch out my posts i'm just gonna make a mark right here i have room to play with because i am putting vinyl caps and trim pieces over that make that one and one right here i have my overhang right here if you picture this is the piece of decking and then if i hook on i got about four and seven eighths to the post so i hook on to here and i mark four and seven eighths and i'll mark it again right here and i'll mark that nice with a square do the same on the other side and cut out those notches let's see how we did that's perfect okay not going to put anything into place just yet we're going to do the side pieces first so in my case i have to notch out the siding so i'm going to hold my piece right here and mark right there and then i will hold this about where it's going to go and mark this so i can cut it [Music] nice awesome i have this piece exactly where i need it now i'm going to measure for this one one square cut on that end and then down to here 50 and an eighth i can cut that 45. remember which piece goes where [Applause] all right my piece is in it's a little tricky getting it in here but this is a small enough notch where i was able to this 45 looks great once i screw it down tight together i think it's gonna look awesome now i can do the same thing on that side that looks great like i said once you screw it down tighten it up it's going to look awesome [Music] nice and tight over here cool now we can attach it so i'm going to pull these boards out and caulk in back there slide them back in and anywhere i'm going to attach just so they're in the right place right next to the post because i have a trim piece going over and that screw will be covered so i don't have to do anything fancy with that same out here i'll attach close to the post here and here and over there just to get these in place hey see if i can get this out without breaking anything i want to talk about attaching these 45s for a minute with these scrap pieces of wood you can picture this as the outside of my deck and you can tell by the video what i'm going to do is hold this nice and tight this stuff the composite decking will expand and contract uh throughout the the seasons especially if you're in a cold climate that gets hot it gets cold so there is going to be some movement here this particular manufacturer says that if you use screws in locations like this it will minimize the expansion and contraction i'm not sure how much i will leave in the description if this video is older uh and leave me a comment if i haven't done it yet and i'll let you guys know how much this stuff has moved around so when attaching this some people will biscuit joint this where a biscuit joiner is basically it cuts a groove in here and in here and a little biscuit of wood goes in there with glue and attaches it together to make sure it's nice and flush and even some people will also on the back side here use pocket screws which are pre-drilled this way and again attach that so it's nice and even obviously with this particular material it would be very difficult to do that what i'm going to do is right in the corner here i'm going to put one screw i'm going to pre-drill with my countersink bit and i'm going to do that a couple times so that i can get all the junk out of there because if there's any junk in there your nice tight 45 can end up with just a little bit of a gap and i don't want that i want it as nice and tight as i can so i'm going to try and run this in a couple times and then even run the screw in and out a couple times and clean out all that stuff that gets in there so that this 45 will be nice and tight and then i can attach my other fasteners [Music] this decking i actually could not find caps so i made them myself so the short explanation of how to make your own caps is you take a piece of decking same piece of decking it you're using rip it down and you find a countersink that matches this plug cutter this one's nice because you don't need a drill press like a lot of them and you basically from the back side here drill this out grab with your pliers we have a nice plug that matches your decking grain and everything and you just try and match up the grain to whatever grain you have that you're filling and then if you're doing the sides like i just did you can rip a piece from the side of the decking and do the same thing it's pretty simple but really effective if you can't find your own plugs that looks great so now you can attach it with whatever you're using i'm using these hidden fasteners like i showed you this goes in the groove if you are using the same things you can rip off the legs like this for situations like that and for your end joints right here before i attach this picture frame completely i'm gonna fill in the rest of the deck boards [Music] there we go all set i think it looks great all these are nice and even you can see the black and not the pt underneath pressure treated i did my screws here um they're they are color matched but they're going to be covered so it just depends on what you're using maybe you're going to use um color matched screws or maybe you're going to use plugs and it worked out where i didn't even have to rip this piece my three quarters is gonna cover over that gap i think it came out awesome so this is my version of a picture frame for this deck i guess a true picture frame would be if i 445 that and then 45 that side it's the same process for the ones out here um i didn't think it would make much of a difference though this does look like a different color it's actually not it's just the way the light's hitting off of it but some people do different colors like a darker color around the edge and on the inside and sometimes that looks really great but this is my version of a picture frame like i said if you have a this is a really small deck but if you have a bigger one it's the same process you just do your 45s all along the outside edge and then fill in the middle with your pieces now i'm going to wrap it up by putting screws and plugs all along the outside edge of the decking [Music] so that's how i picture framed my deck i hope you enjoyed the video and if you want to see more videos like it you can click
