so my wife came to me one day and said what a waste of space underneath this stairway what if we do something here like a mini bar put some cabinetry wine cooler some decorations then i said okay challenge accepted [Music] so first step with most remodeling is to tear things down that's the fun part i started by marking where the two by fours were so i could then cut the drywall i decided to start with a small cut so i could look inside and assess what we had in there give a good look inside didn't see any problems i said okay let's keep rolling i was being very careful trying to remove the trims without damaging them but we ended up not reusing them if i knew that beforehand i would have simply tear them down [Music] you know when we see folks on tv tearing things down doing remodeling it seems they have a lot of fun in doing so and indeed i had to say it was fun to knock things down [Music] here look the remodeling had just began and here comes my wife to the vacuum cleaner she can't help it [Music] okay first major problem staircases are usually viewed with a support at the base and where the stringers end at the vertical post in our case whoever built the staircase did not attach these fingers to that vertical beam the end of the stringer here simply touching the wall there's no bracket nor screws holding it there this finger is actually being supported by the six two by fours instead and as we did not consider this scenario originally we had to change our project to recreate a supporting structure underneath this stairs and also to add a couple more supporting two by fours where the originals work second problem do you see that orange cable back there when i initially made that small cut on a dry drywall i saw it and i thought great i don't have to worry about bringing electrical wires from somewhere else i'm all set but guess what this orange cable is not part of any electrical circuit in the house there's no wires in there it's just a stupid orange cable still wondering what the heck that was for anyhow another project changed to bring electrical wires underneath the stairs the question was from where as we didn't have any outlets nearby luckily there's an outlet on the outside of the house and when i measured the location it ended up being inside this closet so i said let's dig it out i made just a small cut at the right location on the wall looked through the insulation and bingo found the cable now we're back in business note that i had to make a pretty decent sized hole in the drywall as i had to drill towards the bottom because of the ac refrigeration line on the other side of the wall [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] with the electricals now wired up underneath the stairs the next step was to build the new supporting structure and it had to be at the precise depth so you could later accept the drywall and match the depth of the cabinetry and wine killer okay hammer drills are naturally loud but inside this box their sound is really long [Music] so from here on things finally started to work out in our favor [Music] [Music] [Music] of course we had to adapt our garage to come up with a makeshift workshop as there would be a quite amount of wood [Music] cutting [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] now that the new supporting structure was finalized it was time to get rid of the original [Music] oh the last one you know i was a bit concerned that once i cut this last one the stairs would be a bit flimsy i even told my wife don't go upstairs until i replace the corner 2x4 no just joking it was well secured already but i still wanted to add another 2x4 at that very high corner to really make sure that any forces on the outside of the stringer would be evenly distributed among all the supporting beams well what they say trust but verify yeah it was good [Music] [Music] the end of the hardwood floor here was very rough so we had to square it out before placing the new base [Music] [Music] [Music] okay so i almost screw up here i forgot to check if the screws were too long that would punch the drywall on the other side i got a bit of luck on that [Music] one [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] finally with this last 2x4 installed we could go upstairs and go to bed that was a long day [Music] here i was installing the outlet for the wine cooler and the switch for the led on the top drywall would be next it was getting some shape already on here you can actually see the amount of space we had underneath the stairs and we basically still just used about two thirds of it [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] yeah that's dust time that was quite a lot of dust notice that we tried to put a curtain on that corner but didn't help much [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] almost there paint time now that the drywall was secured in all holes and gaps filled and the base leveled sanded and stained then it will be just finish it up with the cabinetry [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] notice that i almost forgot to paint the drywall all the way down yeah that almost slipped away my wife caught me on that one [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay i didn't forget to paint the bottom of this shelf i actually ran out of paint here and i left it like that no one will ever crawl down there to see [Music] it we decided to use heavy duty velcro on this side of the trim instead of staples it would be much easier to take them out in case we needed to move or replace the wine cooler afterwards [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the final touch to seal the top with silicone and that was it folks and now with the final result cheers [Music] thank you for watching folks i hope you enjoyed it and got excited to do something different at your own place cheers
