have you ever wondered what hair color would look absolutely perfect on you based on your eye color and your skin color to make your features pop well then wheel yourself in we're talking about color theory today wheels like color wheel now look i'm a strong believer that the best color for you is the one that makes you feel the most beautiful but is it true that you really can't wear every color um oh um well absolutely not you can wear any color you want as long as it's the right tone for you or you just do as you please but if you want to find the perfect tones for you then there are some things that you may want to consider and we're going to go over all of these things today in this video because if you don't consider these very important things like our skin tone and our eye color then you may end up looking like this when really you want it to look something like this what's good everybody it's your main girl mel feeling brand new and if you are new welcome to the channel i'm so glad to have you here i am a professional hair stylist a lover of color and my duty with this channel is to help you achieve the hair of your dreams but while also doing it helpfully by the end of this video we are going to determine what is your temperature what are your undertones what is your natural hair color category and what is your hair texture because these are all the things as a professional hair stylist and colorist i consider when i am determining the perfect hair color for someone but we've got to work together so take out your notebook i'm going to be asking you a couple questions like what was your hair color when you were a child which you may think is random but it is a very important question when determining what your best hair color is going to be and i'm going to share all this information with you so you can make sure that you do not make any mistakes at your next color appointment by accidentally maybe getting a color that isn't right for you and your skin tone and it doesn't make you pop and it doesn't work for your hair and it doesn't last because you didn't consider the following so let's avoid that and without further ado let's get to it so the key to looking your best most vibrant beautiful looking self is by wearing colors of your personal palette think bob ross when he's holding his little color palette your color palette is going to be an array of different tones and hues and when you think about your color palette think about the big picture how all of those colors come together that's exactly what we want to focus on when determining your hair color now what's fun about changing your hair color is you can either make it contrasting by incorporating opposite tones such as blue hair on orange skin or rather copper hair on blue eyes you know what i meant or by adding contrast in the value of the color so if you are very very fair and you wear very dark hair or platinum hair on dark skin that is going to give a lot of contrast to your palette and be very eye-catching now on the other hand your hair color palette can be very harmonious a harmonious color can be very monochromatic all the same types of tones on one person for example i think my hair color is very harmonious to me but what am i we need to determine our undertones before we decide if we want to go contrasting or harmonious with your hair color palette we need to determine if your undertones are warm or cool let us begin with skin now there are three undertones that exist on the two extremes we have warm toned and cool toned and the third one would be in between as neutral figuring out your skin tone can be a little bit tricky because of tens our skin color can change based on how much time we spend in the sun usually the sun will give everyone kind of a warm or golden glow but that being said how you tan is a very good indicator of what your undertone is if you sunburn easily you may have cool toned skin some other good indicators of having cool toned skin would be that against a white sheet of paper your skin can look very red pink or even blue now there's another thing that you can do in direct sunlight look at the inner portion of your wrist and the inside of your wrist is the thinnest piece of skin and you can see your veins if you have tattoos this may be an issue for you but when you're taking a look at your veins in direct sunlight if they look blue or purple that is an indicator that your undertone is cool toned now if you're still not sure another cool trick i like to do is actually to use some paint swatches now you don't have to use paint swatches you can use any colored anything to compare your tones now on the other hand if you tan really well that's a good sign that you have a warm undertone to your skin against the white sheet of paper if your skin looks almost yellowish and golden then that would tell you that you are warm actually you're hot and when looking at the inside of your wrist your veins appear to be greenish [Music] color is so much fun now at this point you've probably determined i'm definitely cool i'm definitely warm but if you haven't you're probably neutral and hey me too now i'm not in direct sunlight right now but in direct sunlight when i compare my veins to this kind of olivey green palette compared to this more blue palette and even against the violet palette fun fact this is the color of my bedroom my veins are both a combination of green and blue and i can definitely tan pretty easily but i have to wear sunscreen on the first day otherwise i am burning i am burning and i will be red but when i do tan it's really nice and golden if i tan a lot i can be orange that's a different story but overall i'm kind of in this mix match if you're also neutral it's really fun because you have more options with your hair now that doesn't mean that if you have cool toned skin that you have to have cool toned hair but you know that for sure those tones will look really good on you but remember neutrals we can have it all now besides your skin undertones you may also want to consider the shade of your skin if you have very fair very white and pale skin you may want to stick to lighter shades of color more of the blonde ranges because this will look more natural on you and it won't make you look as pale whereas on darker shades of skin you can pull off black hair any shade of brown and even different reds and once again if you are somewhere in the middle with a medium tone skin you can go really light with blonde you can go really dark with black and everything in between you're really a versatile queen now i wanted to talk about your skin color and your undertones first because that's usually the first thing you want to take in consideration when determining your hair color with your eyes however the windows to the soul your eyes will always look best and pop more if you create that visual contrast our eyes are our greatest feature and it's usually what we really want to focus on when we are framing our face with our hair color now you may have already noticed now that my hair is a little bit darker my eyes are popping even brighter that's because i've created some visual contrast between the darkness and the light eyes your eyes will always shine brighter if they are framed with darkness now whether you have light eyes or dark eyes let's figure out your undertone if your eyes tend to have gold and yellow and orange in them then you guessed it you have warm undertones in your eyes cool toned eyes of course would be blue gray light green and even violet eyes if your eyes look very grayish and bluish obviously they are cool toned now once again using myself as an example getting real close here depending on the lighting and depending on what i'm wearing my eyes are a light green and they can even look gray which is more on the cool spectrum but all around my pupils there is this flare of this amber gold color that again would classify my eyes as neutral i can swing both ways it's so fun sorry if you're not it's fine we're gonna we're gonna get to the fun things that you can do now what about the undertones of our hair as a stylist i've literally heard a million times my hair goes very red my hair goes very orange my hair goes very warm and okay everyone has these warm undertones in our hair when we are lightening our hair but some people will pull warmer and have more warm tones in their hair than others making them harder to lighten and as a stylist i can actually determine how your hair is going to lighten and if it is going to pull warm based on how your hair was when you were a child and yes you may think that is very random but i'm taking you down memory lane we're going to pull up the photo albums and we're going to determine what your hair was like in your youth and this is going to tell us what your hair color category is now according to the american board of certified hairdressers there are four hair color categories across the globe now each of these categories have very distinct traits and everyone watching will find themselves in these categories to determine what your undertones are and how your hair is going to take to color this is very important do you still have your notebook jot this down the first of these categories is category b this category accounts for 75 to 80 of the entire world's population so there is a very good chance that you are a category b client now people in the b category are born with very dark hair that stays dark pretty much throughout their entire lives until they go gray now when we take a look at the hair color level system a level one would be the darkest black hair and a level 10 would be the lightest blonde platinum but if you are a person in the category b your hair color is naturally between levels one two and three so very dark brown now the next category is category w the w category stands for warm brown now let me know if this sounds like you when you were a young child you were born with blonde or sandy brown hair and slowly as you got older into your teen years you dark into a brown sorry this one hits different for me yeah you know most people in the w category would consider themselves brunette because that's how they looked in their high school years which are some of the most formative years for me i still look at my childhood and i'm like i'm that little blonde kid i'm not that blond kid anymore however if you are in the w category your hair can lighten in the sun kind of like a blonde but not quite if you are category b this is not going to happen for you your your hair won't really lighten in the sun but category w you definitely can get those natural highlights in the sun even though you are a brunette people in the warm brown category can range from a level four to five to six and the highest being a seven so this is all within the medium brown to the light brown darkest blonde range now i myself right now i'm currently at about a level seven eight you hear that mel you're not a real blonde you're not in the s category the s category stands for soft brown and this is the blonde category your hair might have darkened after childbirth but for the most part you have been blonde your whole life and you probably want to stay blonde you may do anything to stay blonde you are probably the one in and out of the salon the most because you are not having any of the roots about nine percent of the world's population is a part of the s category which accounts for people in the levels 7 8 9 and 10 range so this is the lightest of the four categories now the last category is the rarest of the rare it is category r for the redheads only one percent of the population is considered a natural redhead and this is how you know if you are in the r category if you were a redhead and you still are a redhead or at least you were throughout your high school and most of your life if you've now gone gray you're still considered in the r category but for anyone that may have had reddish blonde colors when they were younger that soon darkened to brown you are not considered a redhead you would be in the warm brown category with me come along it's okay hair color in the r category can range from a strawberry blonde to a copper to a bright auburn red and this category usually ranges from a level four five and six are you b for dark brown are you w like me or are you s blonde like i want to be or are you the rarest of the rare are comment below which hair color category you are and remember it because your hair color category is so important when you want to change your hair color now the main thing that determines the differences between the four categories is the amount of melanin and the placement of types of melanin in other words if you have very dark hair you're in the lower levels you're going to have a lot of melanin in your hair and if you're in the higher levels you may not have as much melanin in your hair but you will have a type of melanin that is very warm called pheomelanin pheomelanin is the type of melanin that controls the warmth in your hair so if you can literally see warmth in your hair as the sun is shining through you can determine that there is a lot of fail melanin in your hair and it's going to be harder for you to get those lighter platinum ashier tones as a hair stylist i wanted to bring this up because everyone has these melanins in their hair that causes this warmth on the bright side most people look good with this warmth especially if you are neutral to warm warm tones look great in your hair because they're very harmonious to your palette but even if you are more cool toned having warm tones in your hair may be that contrast that makes your other features pop however if you are not into warm tones i do not recommend you go lighter with your hair color because going lighter is always going to expose warmth and it's always going to fade warm you're always going to have that warmth so you either do it or you know you do it or you know next year don't forget about the texture if you're going to be coloring your hair you need to consider what your hair texture is because not all hair types will be able to take certain colors for example category b again i'm using category b as an example because most of the population is category b people in the b category usually have more of a coarse texture because it is so dark it does have more melanin in the hair strand which means their hair strands individually are thicker and when you have such a thick hair strand with so much melanin in it it's going to be hard to lift to a light level but luckily coarse strands tend to be stronger than fine strands if you have fine little baby thin strands strickles little baby hairs your hairs likely won't have as much melanin pigments so it will be easier to lighten and lift but you don't want to go overboard you have to be very careful going lighter because fine hair is fragile so when you are determining a hair color for yourself keep in mind your hair type and texture and finally that's everything you want to keep in mind now it's time to decide the hair color for you and i'll use myself as an example to explain how i got this end color my natural hair color category is w the hair color that grows from my scalp right now is a natural level five and my natural dark hair can appear very cool until the sun hits it which can cause my hair to lighten a little bit and reveal some warmth therefore my hair has both warm and cool tones and the undertones in my skin and my eyes are also neutral i wanted to keep my hair color neutral so i could have versatility with my outfits i can play up both the warm tones and the cool tones and overall the tones in my color palette are harmonious but now that my hair color is a little bit darker i was able to create that visual contrast to bring out the lightness in my eyes now this hair color is also going to grow out beautifully because it is such a close match to my natural my ends are about two to three shades lighter than my natural which already has such a nice gradient grow out it appears very natural on me and that's what i like in my hair i like my hair to look very natural i obviously want my features to pop and i want to be able to have versatility to swing both ways so that's how i created this medium dark blonde with neutral undertones and i love it it's not too light for me and it's definitely not too dark for me oh my god note to self never never color your hair blackmail that is scary so now that we've completely analyzed me and decided that this was my perfect hair color let's take a look at some of the options for you and what you may want to consider now my sister and i have created some flow charts for you to follow so without further ado you can go ahead and screenshot if you are a
