hey guys matt from Orr's so today we went up in the hood on this hey Hyundai as you can see the clear coat has failed and the paint is in very poor condition as always we're gonna be using products you can use at home you won't need any special equipment and won't cost a lot of money okay so let's get started okay so the first step as always is to wash down the area we'd only sand our great getting into the sanding process and it's just good practice as well okay for the next step you're gonna need a sanding block but if you haven't got a sanding block you can use styrofoam in sometimes they don't come with a new TV or a new washing machine what you can do is you can actually just cut it down to size and to Rock just as good as a sanding block hundred grit sandpaper probably later on I move up to 600 but for now we'll be using the 400 fish okay so in other areas where the pant is lifted off I'm just feathering the edge on the pant this will give it a smooth transition so when you paint over that it leaves no dips or hollows in the pant okay so a few of the areas that are really really bad I stepped up to 180 grit sandpaper simply because the 400 is taking too long with the 180 be a lot quicker going through the airport okay so just finishing up the glass that I sound in here now we'll just clean down the hood and move on to the next step okay so after about an hour standing with 400 Chris and 180 crate on the bad areas this is what we left foot it's very feather out there's no hard edges so it's ready for the next step which is primer the first thing I do is going to try and remove this grille and I'm going to mask up the rest so we don't get Panta dining else okay so a good tip is when you're masking off a hood is to open the hood up and slide the paper underneath the hood that way overspray doesn't get on the engine compartment or on the windshield okay so for this step I've put on some gloves because we call me decreasing the panel before we put the primer on this is the most important step really because a lot of people don't clean the paneling properly before the paint I'm gonna be using that panel wipe which will remove any grease or silicones right they might have landed on the panel okay so this is the primer gonna be using the tension primer I'm gonna frame the entire hood because the paint work was so poor on this normally get away or prime in a small area if your hood isn't as bad but this one was so bad I'm gonna pry in the tyre hood so that way we should have no problems there on okay so one last cleaned down with a tack rag okay so the first question sees a very very light court you can sense it imperfections true their primary court but once you put the second coat on a lot of these should be hidden and they shouldn't be visible if they are visible you might need to put our third court but I'm going to put the second quarter on there now okay so I've put two and a half to three core four quarts on at this stage you shouldn't see any their previous clear core damage from underneath you should have a nice smooth even shine the whole way across they heard don't mind little imperfections because you'll be sanding this primer that before we put on the past conduct clear okay so the primer is dry there now what I'm gonna do now is going to spray what's called a guide cord this involves taking any tired color which in my case is matte black and misting it over the panel this will is a little trick that professionals use that will show up any little imperfections or any areas we might miss Schwimmer sound in the primer okay so now we're using 600 grit sandpaper in the block and we'll just sound it in one direction only okay so if we hadn't spread the guide call we wouldn't have seen IEDs imperfections these were invisible to the naked eye but because we've we've put on a light coat of black we can now see all the imperfections okay so again we using some panel wipe just to decrease the hood before we start painting okay so this is the base coat we're gonna be using I've had a mixed up to the cord that's on the vehicle normally confined in the glove compartment or inside one the doors or sometimes it's underneath the engine bay in this case this was the paint code for this Hyundai I'm just gonna start off a light cord first and then gonna build up then to a heavier court okay so that's the first quarter pairs caught on it should look Pat you like this it shouldn't be a heavy court we're just going for a coverage more than finish the second call and the third coat will be looking for a good finish okay so the first call is now dry now it's time for the second quarter Bay escort okay so that's tree and tire quartz I've put on and as you can see we've got really really good coverage it's just dry in there now soon as this dries we'll put on the clear coat and then we'll be finished okay so this is the clear coat we're gonna be using this is a 2k clear cause it's a little bit more expensive than 1k clear court but it's worth it it's a tougher wear and tear core as well and also I think it gives a superior gloss finish as well okay so I'm gonna tack rag the pattern down one last time and then we want to smash on the clear okay so now we're moving on to the second quarter clear code this code we're going to be going a lot heavier okay guys so it's a treat for the courts as you can see we've got a really nice deep shine pretty pretty impressive shine from an aerosol can I'm just gonna remove the mask and I'm gonna be fit to grill I'm gonna bring it outside and we're gonna have a look okay so here it is out in the daylight really nice deep shine art from the aerosol can I would say it's pretty excellent results hope you enjoyed the video guys and that's how you paint a hood and a care thanks for watching

You should cross post this to /r/CarRestorations, it can be a good way for someone to protect their cars metal while they're restoring it.

Just a few cans of spray paint had to cost more then $30.00. What’s the real price?

Not bad. Definitely better than expected. If anyone decides to try this, remember to take the windshield sprayers out before painting the hood. Please use some filtered ventilation and cover any surface areas that would hold dust. And kids, if you’re using rattlecan clear coat, I hope you get familiar with ultra-fine grit wet sanding and buffing; that’s the best way to make it shine.

At one point he sprays a black layer very lightly to reveal the problem areas just before sanding. But then he doesn't seem to do anything about them after sanding / before painting. What's the point of making the problem areas more distinct?
