[Music] hi guys and welcome back to my channel today i'm going to show you step by step how to paint this big lighthouse in the fall i'm using an 11 by 14 canvas today primed once with acrylic gesso so i'm using taylor and roundy today and here are the colors that we're going to be using we've got light blue violet luminous rose or any pink that you have will do just fine i've also got some yellow ochre luminous neon yellow warm and bird sienna as well as a little bit of black and be sure to look below the video for the full list of colors and brushes i'm using today in this painting tutorial [Music] so the first colors we're going to be using are the light blue violet also be using a little bit of the luminous rose and we will be using some white as well that titanium white but you can use any white that you want so the first thing i want to do with my large brush but a number 50 filbert brush here i want to wet my canvas with a little bit of water first this will just help the canvas take the paint a lot easier makes the canvas a little bit slippery so your paint doesn't dry out as quickly okay so i'm just going to take my blue violet and i'm going to start at the top and this is when you can decide if you want to have clouds in your sky or just keep it a little bit patchy looking without any clouds so some areas are going to be a little bit lighter and darker and then when we come over top with our pink or our rose we're going to get a few different color variations that will look really really pretty the pink overlapped with the blue is going to make a very pretty lilacy violet color [Laughter] so uh now where i want to have my rose overlap with the blue to make it darker i'm just going to come right in here and just kind of create these little soft scoops and this will just kind of give that feeling that there's some clouds and you can apply these anywhere that you want now our trees are going to cover up this area down here but i want to have a bit of a darker base and because we're using um some yellows and a little bit of a soft peach color when i combine this with a bit of white later that's complementary to the blue so it's really nice to have a bit of this blue down here to complement uh the yellow and the peach i just added a little bit of water on my brush to help work out and blend out the last remaining paint in my brush so i'm going to wash this out now dry this off and then we can come in with our rose as a filter or a glaze okay so as you can see it's all dry and now i'm going to take this brush again is clean it's got a little bit of water in it i need that though to help spread the paint around um i'll just show you the difference if i just use straight uh luminous rose and that's this one here by holbein if i use this full strength without any white how vibrant and saturated that's going to be and that is really pretty but if you're wanting something a little bit softer and i do i'm going to add a little bit of white to this before that can dry now this is going to dry darker as it is so it's i would recommend adding the white to it just to soften the tone up and you don't have to add that everywhere you can have it a little bit patchy looking so there's some different tones going on in the sky and look i can play around with it too at this stage you can push and scrub off and expose some of the blue still under there so that's really what i want to do is have a combination of blue a little bit of blue and white a little bit of that pink and overlap it i'm going to add a little bit down here as well and i've got quite a bit of this so i'm going to use this most of this will get covered up but there'll be like a little hint of this showing and we'll have a little ponder lake down here in front of the lighthouse and these colors will reflect down in the water in between the darker shadow colors and the leaves that we're going to add okay so we're going to work on the background trees first and then add our lighthouse and then we'll add the trees that go in front of the lighthouse so we've got to build it up in order it's really hard to add the trees in the front and then paint the lighthouse in behind those trees right it's got to make sense so make it the easiest you can for yourself by working background to foreground so the next stage we're at right now are the bushes and trees that are changing color uh in the background so for that i'll be using a little bit of burnt sienna and then some yellow ochre i'll add some pretty highlights with this glowing luminous yellow i need a darker base than this for now so i'm going to be taking a little bit of this black i'm using mars black but you can use any black that you want when you're choosing your blacks um some of them can be glossy for some reason so um just be careful and read on uh the back or the or the front and make sure that it doesn't say it's a gloss finish uh gloss and regular paints don't really work blend well together and the last thing that you want is to be left with a finished painting that is shiny in some areas and matte in others unless that's what you're going for that's fine but if it's not then kind of just check and check beforehand just to make sure so just squeeze a little bit of that out we don't need a lot of black it's very strong and i think i'm going to use a little bit of burnt sienna nice warm colors in here and i'm going to use um let's see we've got i've got my oval bob brush i really like this one it's a one inch i'm not going to get it wet you don't want to get it wet first because then you'll lose that little shape that poofy shape that you want for creating all the foliage so we're going to start the ground is going to be down here along with the little lake or the pond and this lighthouse is really really makes a statement it's powerful it's our focal point and the angle it is on is very dramatic and it's like we're down here maybe in a boat maybe we're in a little canoe here or a rowboat and we're looking up at it so i love the perspective of this and to achieve that we're gonna start by adding the uh bushes and trees low down here so i'm gonna take that luminous rose a little bit of burnt sienna a little bit of black and you can see how dark that is just tap tap tap in there and then i'm just gonna right about here start tapping and then i'm going to leave a space because i know that i've got my lighthouse from about here to here so that i don't have to go over that because and then i'll have to cover that up and that'll take a lot longer so it's just a waste of paint and i'm just going to start tapping in here push and tap we can leave a little bit of that rose showing and then we'll just add a little bit on the edge like that reload my brush the paint is starting to flake off that's the only thing i i have negative to say about these princeton brushes the water will make the paint flick off and i don't like that because it lands on my painting so i'm just gonna continue here just a little bit like this and then we'll have a larger one up here but it's gonna be more of the yellow ochre so i'm just gonna push and tap the excess paint out of there and then just do this really lightly because we need a little bit of this darker base first but not much a little bit of a darker base here before we come in with our yellow ochre because the darker base is going to make our brighter and lighter colors and our highlights show up and stand out so you need both in order to work and then down here we've got some darker shadows in the water and we've also got some reflection from the blue and the lilacy color up there as well as we're gonna have some of the yellow ochre yellowy leaves fallen on this pond as well so i'm just gonna have a few streaks down here just by simply pulling just pulling from here to here and leaving the rest that purpley blue color so i'll just pick a few areas here and if we want more depth we can go in and just lightly add a little bit of black don't worry about what the shape looks like above around it or on the side that's going to be hidden when we add our leaves okay so just a little bit here and there just simply like that and then i'll wash this brush out i've got to dry another one here a dry one i always have a few of the same brushes here it is this one's a bit newer as you can see the paint hasn't started flaking off yet so now i can start adding my yellow ocher that'll be our next color and i'm just going to add that right in this clean little dish here okay and then i'll add some of my luminous yellow so i'm gonna start knowing how to load the brush is really important too i hope i show that enough to you guys in my videos depending on what brush you're using when you're using a stipple brush mop brush oval brush like this we're using this for the specific shape that it has that poofiness right so that's what you have to keep in mind when you're loading your brush so tap you want to load your brush how you're going to be using it the specific brush stroke for this part will be tapping and stippling so that's how i'm loading my brush so you can see it's still poufy on the bottom and i did not get it wet if you put it in water first it's going to get all squishy and lose that shape so i'm going to start up here going over this one that's going to be brighter and it doesn't have the dark dark shadows underneath it as much as these ones down here at the base in the bottom okay i'm going to tap in i want to have this a little bit uh thicker in some spots and then sparingly in others so like the paint is thicker there but then i'm going to leave a space here's a little bit more of a space so that i can see those the dark shadows and then reload my brush and we'll come in over here and start applying it and just a light tapping motion like this and then it's going to start to go a little bit round so i'm pushing lifting up and tapping okay and i'm gonna follow along down below for the leaves and they're sort of laying flat so i'm just going to pull and drag and then tap very low and flat like so i'm not doing a push straight up and down tap i'm kind of using this bottom and the tip so they're really low so i'll load my brush up again pull and you could use a filbert brush actually a filbert brush would work really well for this and i don't want to make this solid again remember because we want to see those pretty purples and hints of the sky so try to just add enough of each color that you're still left with a little bit of all of them once you've added them all if that makes sense now this is the first layer we're going to add some highlights so again a little push and tap there i think that looks pretty okay so i'm gonna take a little bit of my white push and tap like this take a little bit of my neon luminous yellow and do the same tapping motion and a little drag and pull here and there see how pretty these peachy yellow soft colors go together with the blue and the purple and we'll come in push and tap make sure i keep that round poofy shape i'll start to add some highlights to these trees in some areas like this now if you want to be a little bit more generous in color it will dry a little bit different in fact it's probably going to dry uh it will dry darker than this and i will be going back with some more highlights later on this is just this stage of the painting okay so i'm going to add a few little lines for some tree trunks and some branches and i'm going to be using a liner brush for this next step so i've got this one it's also princeton and it's a number one and we're going to be kind of just sneaking in here i'd like to turn my handle over like this and pull and wiggle just for a few once we add our lighthouse we're going to be coming in over top with some of the foliage that's in the foreground and in front of the lighthouse there's another little tree that we're going to add right here so what you want to do is get your liner brush wet and i'm going to take some of my burnt sienna and i'm just going to start wiggling so you can approach it this way with the handle pointing towards you or start from lower down with a handle pointing out whatever feel feels comfortable there's no right or wrong and as you can see there's a very indistinct we're just adding a suggestion that they're there it's farther away and we really don't want to overpower this setting with too many big branches and tree trunks because what's going to happen is that's going to compete with uh the light hose here so we just want to have a little a little bit here and there and that will be all we need sometimes less is more and it's a good idea to choose just one area of your painting to have that focal point now i'm going to take a little bit more of my burnt sienna maybe a little bit of black in here they're so close together i can kind of just wiggle them so i decide to load my brush and i'm going to add a little bit more depth in the water i love to have this really nice contrast and areas where we've got this uh dark blackish kind of water i guess you could say you could also use like a deep dark purple or royal blue dioxazine purple that would look nice okay so i'm gonna wash the brush out and now i'm gonna begin working on the lighthouse for the lighthouse uh i'm gonna be using a filber brush and alternating with a flat brush because the um lighthouse is is round right it's circular but the edges i want to be straight so i'll explain that as we go along but initially i'm going to start this the basic shape of it with my flat brush and i'm going to paint it in white first now my white is tinted a little bit with that yellow ochre but that's not a big deal all i'm all for right now is just getting my lines down and my shape so obviously the lighthouse is going to be much larger here in the foreground from here you have a little base that starts to go up like that and this one's going to be kind of it'll be kind of hidden the bottom of the lighthouse will be kind of hidden and tucked away with some trees and foliage and then it's going to get narrower you don't want to end up with like a pizza slice triangle right so it gets narrower but not into a point and then there's towards the top here paint a little rectangle on the top leave oh about half an inch in between and then we'll do a smaller little rectangle like this and we're going to make this look round by adding the shadows and the lines with our filbert and possibly a liner brush but before i do that i'm just going to continue filling this in with white now you notice as i'm doing this i'm creating a bit of a curve now doing that from one edge to the other and you can even go back and forth and alternate turning your brush over because there's paint on both sides so that will give it that circular look that's not really necessary you could just paint the whole thing in white and we'll add shadows and highlights later that will also help to create that look and i'm just gonna start to change this up a little bit in here because we're gonna have some shadows that are gonna be this color on the lighthouse so and it's from the the trees and the bushes so i'm gonna just start wiggling in and then maybe if i do this it'll start to look like those shadows are there and i don't have to go over in the same colors if i were to paint it white first but regardless i'm going to be coming back in with some more shadow colors to add a little bit of the shadows from leaves and shapes that kind of go up here towards one of the windows and it's going to take a few layers to get this nice and bright so that we really feel the sun on it this is the first layer like i said and now i'm going to just let that let that sit there actually i'm just going to scumble over this area a little bit here so i can cover up some of those trees and bushes gonna wash this brush out and i'm going to start coming in with my filter brush this is a number nine i'm just going to go right into my burnt sienna and right here i'm going to just start pushing up and then letting off so you're making a little arch like that and then kind of wrapping it around and there's a bit of a shadow here on the side a little bit of a shadow the line right there and right on the top of this one we'll do the same thing but it's going to be a little bit narrower and then i'm going to add the window panes that are in there's shadow inside because it's during the day and we're not going to see that big bright light are we i'm just going to push and tap a little bit in here with my yellow ochre a little bit of burnt sienna just to start adding some of that foliage why not we may as well we can do that right now a little bit down there a little bit of yellow ochre and the other yellow and start tapping in here this is going to remember just set and nestle that big old lighthouse in place and make it look like it's been standing there a long time add a little bit of white a little bit of white and a little bit of a tap and we're just going to stumble up the side here and take a little bit of that yellow and white again and then right in here i'm going to just add a little bit as well as on this side it almost looks like a skinny triangle coming down right here i've got another yellow that i want to use this one's a cool luminous yellow neon and i'm going to take a little bit of this for the brightest highlights just a little bit there for the brightest highlights on the lighthouse so it's just really pretty soft lemon meringue color and you want to make sure you have enough white with it so that once it dries it's not gonna make a funny color like turn a little bit uh green i don't want it to be green now a way to cut that from happening or correct that from happening is to add balance it out with a little bit of the warm so just warming it up will help prevent that from happening but seeing here we have all these little shadows from the leaves and the trees you can cut in around that little skinny triangle pick up more more white a little bit of that yellow and really come back in here and fill this i'm going to do a little line or make a little square right here and then just a little line on the edge because we're going to have that window in here right and then i'll just pull pull around and i'm going to bring that down a little bit bring that down a little bit it kind of looks like a big tall snowman right now more of that yellow start adding it in around and a little bit down here tap just a little bit in here for some highlights and then i'm going to wash my brush off and with my damp washed out mop brush i can use this for a soft little scumble it'll give this kind of a hazy look in these areas where i've got a touch of that a light marine kind of a yellow uh happening it will just look a little bit softer and hazier okay so now we're going to come in and start adding the finer details on this lighthouse i'm going to use my round brush this one's a number two and again use whatever brush that you feel comfortable with for painting uh fine lines and smaller details and i'm gonna use a little bit of black with a little bit more of the burnt sienna i'm gonna start over here pull over we want to create that around like make it seem that it's there's that railing that goes around and then we get a little bit there oh excuse me you get a little bit there like that you can just take it off or go over it after with some white and well i'm going to take just a little bit more of my burnt sienna for this and remember you want it to look like it's going around so we're going to add this just on the outside gently go up slightly and then back down we'll add a little line on either side of that one a little dab for a window and one right there now it just looks like eyes doesn't it and we'll make these meet this up a little bit higher so that arch up round down and then straight down so we can add our a little railing so let's go ahead and do that now we can just little lines i find that if i do them quickly without hesitation then i they tend to look straighter so just a little something like that i'm going to take a little bit of yellow ochre with my burnt sienna now to make a lighter color and i'm going to apply this just slightly on top and above so see how i went above over top and left the underneath black and i accidentally went over a little bit too much so i'm just going to correct that and put that black back there so what that is going to do it makes it look 3d so we've got a shadow there so i'm going to wash that black out and i'm just going to let that dry a little bit and add one of the windows right here so i'm just going to take this burnt sienna with a little bit of that yellow ochre and it goes kind of on an angle it's kind of a funny funny shape so a little diagonal line and it goes just off the lighthouse just off the edge like that and then down and then kind of round like that see it kind of goes up slightly and then on an angle like that i'm going to do just a faint indication of some lines there then i'm going to take my lemon meringue mixture the cool neon yellow with my white and i'm gonna go just slightly above there a little bit down on the edge and then push gently and bring it back in and then up on that little archway there so i'm going to come in and clean these edges up i need a little bit more of my blue i'm just going to put it right there so i'm going to add a little shadow in here i'll take a little bit of white a little bit of my light blue violet and just add a bit of a shadow down on this side here and then see right right behind that window casing and right underneath i'll bring it up a little bit higher i'm going to come in on this side here add a bit of that blue there as well and i'm gonna also just pushing gently and dragging flat to make it look patchy and this will be the windows up top just so it looks like they're shimmery and i'm going to carefully come in here inside the window and clean these edges up now i need to go in here though and make this a little bit narrower so i'm going to go over right over part of the window and just take that white making it narrower and that's something i might have to go back and adjust a little bit later and i can start working on this window here you could use a square brush for this i'm just going to keep going with carefully with my round brush so right about here we'll just add a little square [Music] slightly on a slant actually more of a rectangle there we go just like that then i'm going to go into my yellow ochre i'm just going to pull gently inside take a little bit of white and let that mix in slightly to the other colors okay and then we've got we know that's a little bit darker up here and it's a square so i'm just gonna eyeball it and add a little square right here just a little square window i'm going to come inside to define the dark contrasting shadows and with a little bit of that burnt sienna and black left on my brush just add a little shadow here okay i'm going to take with a clean brush white and blue and i'm going to start to stumble in here some shadows there we've got those subtle pretty shadows from the trees just little taps and dabs not thinking too much about it i like the pretty violet color we have in here so i don't want to ruin that and go over too too much a little bit remaining yellow and white both yellows and just add a little bit of that i'm just going to reload my warm and neon yellow take a bit of white with that oops i got a little bit of blue in there don't want that blue i can accent some of these highlights in here by going over and adding little dabs of that and right down this edge i'm going to clean up the sides here just add a little frame kind of on that side going to add a highlight over top just over top of the top of that and i'll do the same thing i want to take a little bit of burnt sienna this time make this sort of a tan color i've got some little trees some leaves in here i can just use the tip of this brush to stumble that around but if you want to use your stipple mop brush or oval brush that's fine too so again a little burnt sienna a little bit of the neon yellow warm a little bit of white in there if you want and i'm just going to start to dab here pick up a little bit more of that burnt sienna there might be a little bit of black in here too and i'm just going to come in the side here and add some shadows sparingly in between and i can alternate right i can add i can always go back and add some more leaves as well wherever i want to so these little dabs of brown burnt sienna that i'm adding here and there will help create some some more shadow down in this area okay so now i'm gonna just go carefully underneath here with a little bit of burnt sienna and black and add a shadow there so that'll stand out a little bit better now whoops and i'm going to take just a little bit of this light color here and add this very carefully right above without washing my brush i'm going to go into my burnt sienna kind of yellow ochre mixture here and i'm going to add some lines we'll add five so close together one two three four and five i'm going to go inside those and outline i'm going to kind of scoop and scallop slightly when i do that on the top of them now we're still left with a little bit of that light blue and we can always go back and add more if we want as well just for those window panes and i probably will be so now we're going to work on the top and i'm just going to do a diagonal line there one that goes across and one like that so diagonal you can even bring it up into a little point like this and then like that i'll add a little highlight inside of here with a light yellow and then we'll add the top and it's just a little triangle i'm going to add a little bit of black and burnt sienna to outline it and then just a tiny little line on the top like that i'm going to clean those window panes up a little bit add a little bit of my blue and white just a light little mixture like that maybe a little something inside of that one looks like it's missing something how about we add a little bit of a grid a little hair on the end of my brush a little something in there go back with my burnt sienna now okay and then just do another up over and down just one more little railing up there you can barely see it a couple lines just with this light kind of looks like it's yellow ochre now doesn't it and back to this window here bright yellow and white now i used the lemon yellow before now you can use either either or they both look nice and then just go ahead and check and see if you want to add any other highlights then i'm just going to finish here with my shadows in the water so i'm going to come and push up here and just make add a little bit more black just add some more contrast in here oh and then there'd be a there'd be more of a shadow on this side so let's just take a little bit of black with our burnt sienna and just carefully go down the edge like that and where else would we need it a little bit up this side here a little bit more on there i just want to make sure that these areas stand out as much as they should just bring that up a little bit more in warmth by adding some burnt sienna to it a little line right here for the window latch so all these little details like this these are finishing touches they really make a difference in your paintings okay for the next tree i'm going to be using a little fan brush i'm going to paint my tree trunk first skinny little tree trunk back to my liner brush a little bit of that burnt sienna i don't want this very dark at all and i'll make another one a little tree right about here even that's a little bit too dark i'm going to just soften that with a little bit of yellow ochre got just a little yellow maple tree here i think maybe some little branches along here as well i'll just scumble a little bit of that color in there i'm just gonna while i've got this on here go back inside this one don't add a bit of yellow ochre okay so now i can use my little fan brush and start with yellow ochre i'm going to use a little bit of burnt sienna as well just a little bit like that see how it looks like a rake that will give you those little spaces that you want sometimes i come in and i just use the corner at the edge like this and just tap little taps it's little trees like this right that give you those shadows casting around the lighthouse i'll add my highlight just a little bit here with some of that neon yellow warm yellow ochre and a little bit of white now to finish this painting i'm going to take another filbert brush a small one and i'm just going to clean up these areas here so that's my light yellows oh i'm going to need a little bit more so it kind of looks like this is raised and then the waters below it i'll add my last bright bit of highlights here before i call this one done if you wanted to add a little bit of light which i think i want to add just a little bit in here just a little bit of that blue and white can really create a neat perspective by creating these sweeping scoops in a circular motion with your brush and i don't have a lot of paint on my brush make it look like it's sweeping over and kind of up like that it's just a little hint like that and i'm going to call this one done this was a lot of fun to paint uh i don't have a whole lot of lighthouses on my channel i think i've got this maybe the third one or fourth so i hope that you guys really enjoy this one fall is just around the corner i can feel it in the air and i love this time of year it's full of comforts it's cozy and all the beautiful fall colors depending on where you live fall can look much different but
