[Music] hi everyone this is rene romeo of rene romeo calm you're here today to learn how to paint an entry door without brush marks now i know a lot of you want a beautiful flawless finish on your entry door because you only have one chance to make a great first impression now you do need some proper tools and you need proper preparation in order to get the beautiful flawless finish that you're searching for so the first thing you need to do is assess any damage that's occurred in between paintings of your front door and in my case you can see here that this is really sun fated the sun hits this door most of the day so with the discoloration that's going on i can run my hand over the top of it and i can feel some flaking too so prep is really important and the paint is really important the paint that I'll be using needs to resist UV rays and I'll share that with you in just a moment but if you run your hand over the top of this I can feel paint flaking off so what that means to me is that this door needs to be sanded I would recommend that every single time you can use regular sandpaper for this you can use a block sandpaper for this I'll show you what I've purchased and then we'll get going and we'll get this all sanded down to a nice beautiful smooth finish so I'm using sanding sponges for this project I have one that's just a traditional block and I have another one that has an edge detail on it now the plain version can actually just go right along any surface that's nice and flat and then the edge detail can fit in any one of these little crevices here and really get this nice and sanded down so it's going to create a beautiful smooth finish across the entire door I have a ten foot a-frame web and I'm using 80 grit sandpaper 80 grit sandpaper is really great for this because it'll take the finish down just enough rough it up just enough so that the new paint can adhere properly I finished that middle portion I haven't taken off very much paint at all it's not going down to the bare wood that's not what you want all you're really doing is just roughing up the surface a little bit in order to get that paint to adhere so basically I'm done with that one section you saw how quick it was that's what you're going to do with your door too no matter what finish was on your door previously whether it's satin semi-gloss or flat you're going to be doing the same process and this is a side-by-side comparison of the area that's sanded and the area that's not sanded so use the flash punch for any area and then use that angled sponge to gets into every single crevice well the entire surface of the door is sanded I discovered a couple of issues which I'll address tomorrow but in the meantime I'm going to go ahead and wash this using a pressure washer I'm going to get all the dust off the entire surface now if you don't have a pressure washer you could use a car brush and a regular garden hose on the highest setting making sure that you get the entire surface nice and clean because we need a nice clean base for our paint tomorrow [Music] well it's painting day and I'm going to share with you my secrets on how to paint a front door without brush marks now you do need a few little tools here so you need a paint cup like this it's really easy to handle you can put it in one hand and paint with the other speaking of paint brushes I have a 2 inch sash brush this is the type that has the angle on the top I also have a 3 inch version in case I come across an area that's a little larger I can use a larger brush for this I also have a tube of now my happens to be exterior and it's in a dark brown try to make it match your paint color as best you can and the most important part of the entire project is your paint now I have Behr marquee paint it's an exterior semi-gloss now the reason why I'm going with a semi-gloss versus a flat or a satin is a because it's easier to clean and B this is automatically going to make your paint project super smooth that's what semi-gloss paint does for this project so if you're using a satin or you're using a flat you really should use a roller for this I'm using paint brushes but the great thing about semi-gloss paint is that it's automatically going to smooth out as it dries so that's really the key secret here and I'm going to share with you a couple of other tips as I get going so that you get the flawless finish on your front door that you want so the first question is where do you stop and start on a project this big so that you don't get obvious marks in your paint so the answer is I've already started this upper edge here this curve is completely finished and I'm starting on the other side now what I've done is I've stopped at the intersection of the wood right at the top Center and I'm going to stop at this piece of wood here because that's where the construction stops so there's an obvious line there it's a perfect place to stop and then I can go back and I can do this inner curve right at this this intersection so this intersection means that anytime that you have two pieces of wood or two pieces of metal intersecting like that go ahead and stop there use your wet cloth to make a beautiful nice crisp finish so that way when you come back in with your next coat of paint in the opposite direction it's going to blend seamlessly I don't have a terribly loaded brush here and putting a little bit of paint on there and I'm just brushing it on and then I'm moving backward over the project to make sure that I'm blending it back into that wet part so that's really another key to keeping this project nice and smooth is to keep back blending that was just kind of what I'm calling it so this idea of back blending taking the paint that you just painted on and going back over the existing paint so that it's actually going to be smoothed out really well that's also going to lead to a beautiful smooth finish so see what I did there I'm ending right where the wood is cut that's a perfect place to stop and then I can just go ahead and back brush this back into the wet paint and this will dry nice and smooth perfect it's also important to note that you should choose a beautiful day to paint now today is an 82 degree day it's perfect temperature to paint yesterday was a little bit warm and actually yesterday would not have been a good day to paint ninety degrees and high humidity is a bad choice for painting your front door today the weather is beautiful and what it's going to do is it's going to allow all this paint to dry properly not too fast and not too slow so make sure that you're choosing the proper day and just be patient and wait for the proper day during the summer to paint your front door that's going to get you a flawless finish as well and you can also see that the sunlight isn't hitting the door directly this time of day you need to wait until you don't have sun shining on it and it really should be a little bit cooler so in the afternoon is perfect in my location so just be aware that you're not painting in direct sunlight and that your door surface is nice and cool as well so I talked about some issues with the door that I found when I was cleaning it and here's a little dot in the middle of your screen that's actually a spot where a carpenter bee is starting to burrow into the trim around the door so I'm going to plug this up with some caulk it's gonna take care of the problem and the bee won't come back and I'll paint over it and you never know it was there I'm using a wet finger just to press it into that hole making sure that the bee doesn't come back [Music] and then I'm coming up to my second issue now you may have sidelights then you may have areas like this that have come apart so I need to fill this in with caulk and what I'm doing here I'm just taking my cop gun that I've cut at a 45 degree angle I poked the inside and then I'm just going to be pressing this in to this crevice so it really needs to be filled in you don't want to leave any of these areas exposed because that's what causes rocks and speaking of rot if you'd like to see a video of me repairing rot on a door let me know in the comments below this video and I'll produce one of those for you as well so I'm going to cut in here and I'm just using my angled brush I don't have any tape of any sort I'm just going along and the way that I'm doing this nice and even is I'm keeping my eye ahead of the brush if you keep your eye ahead of the brush if your hand is going to follow so if you just keep going you're just gonna follow that line all the way with your eye and then your hand will follow and I have a beautiful wonderful nice straight line and then I can come back up we'll end everything in and then if you have very porous wood like I do here you need to press the paint in so I'm going to be going back and forth over this surface until it actually adheres to all of it it's going to get into all the nooks and crannies from this point what I need to do once everything is kind of settled in I'm just going to go ahead grab the brush and just blend it back up and that's going to be a perfect finish so two things I finished painting all the trim and I'm getting ready to paint the doors and really they need to stay open for a period of four hours in order to let that marquee paint to dry so what I've decided to do is go ahead and lay out some paper I have craft paper here and I'm just going to be taping it on one side to the glass and then on the other side to the glass so the paper is going to be serving two purposes it's going to allow me to keep the doors open for a period of four hours and it's going to prevent any bugs insects or little critters from getting inside the house while the doors are open it might not be pretty but it's going to keep the bugs out the lock sets have been removed and you either need a screwdriver or some allen head wrenches like this to get your lock set off depending on what make you have once they're off go ahead and grab your sandpaper again and just knock this area down because there might be bugs or other debris underneath that lock set so today it's all about being nice and neat whenever you're approaching the door like this you're going to be isolating each and every one of these little rectangles or squares and treating them individually that's the only way you're going to get a beautiful smooth finish out of this paint so I'm taking my two inch brush and you can see how much paint I have on here you know I'm wiping it off and I'm just going to go ahead and treat any little inner piece along the edge first and then fill in all around it now I don't have a whole lot of paint on here you really need to be careful about putting too much paint on because what it's going to tend to do is it's going to drip down so as we go along we're also going to be checking for drips so let me just go ahead and fill this in quickly and then I'll go ahead and show you how I finish off each and every rectangle or square and then here is my secret weapon so I have a nice damp rag and what I'm going to do is just go around the entire perimeter here and wipe off any excess paint that happened to get on to these pieces along the side and then I'll move on to the next rectangle [Music] all the inner panels on the door are painted so I'm going to be starting on the raised areas all the way around these rectangles and squares now the way I'm going to be doing this is from the top of the door down so I'm going to keep a wet edge as I go and kind of creep my way down the door this is going to create the best nicest smoothest look out of this whole raised area so I'm just going to go from top to bottom [Music] [Applause] well already there's a beautiful sheen on this door I'm going to let this dry for hours and then install the lock sets and then after that I'll give you a close-up on this beautiful finish and show you that I've painted my front door with no brush marks so now you know how to paint a front door without brush marks this is the way to go semi-gloss paint is your best friend here and it's going to make a great first impression it looks beautiful it looks completely brand new and if you know somebody that can use this information please share the video with them because you'll help them
