over 30 years ago when i was just about jordan's age i was newly married and a good buddy of mine kevin was a professional house painter he was behind on his work he called me on the land line said hey can you help me out this weekend so i get caught up i said sure thing dude i'll be there you tell me when you tell me where so i show up with my tools the next morning i got my little roller pan got my little roller a little brush and a little painting shield to cut in i'll never forget kevin took one look at all that stuff said dude throw all that in the trash i'm gonna get you set up with what you need to paint here's what he did number one a metal cut in bucket and that's the one i use they make plastic ones but i like this one i can hook my thumb on the bail support the weight of the paint with my whole hand and when i set it down it won't knock over a good brush he was a purdy boy p-u-r-d-y this is a wooster put a nail in the ferrule bend it over hook it on the side of the can you get good enough so you don't even need to look at it anymore just like that it becomes happy throw away the paint pan get yourself a grid from now on paul you're going to be working out of a five gallon bucket and a grid you get yourself a good roller and a three-quarter inch lambswool roller i don't even know if they make those anymore but that's all i used for years and years now sure with technology we've upgraded we have an airless sprayer now and you can't get a finish like this with a brush i still love the way a brushed finish looks on trim right jordan in fact in the two bathrooms on this house we used a brush to paint all the trim and it came out fantastic now there is something to be said about using basic tools to get a quality finish and it makes you appreciate them even more when you upgrade your arsenal just like we did when we got the airless sprayer but jordan and i are going to go old school today on our ceiling i'm gonna cut in with a brush i'm pretty fast and he's gonna use the 18 inch roller behind me but it's kind of dark in this house we don't have our beautiful halo lighting in here yet so what do you say we pull some of this plastic down get some natural sunlight in here and we can start painting that looks awesome right there and you see what we did with the old burglar alarm wire usually you got to paint over them but they were siliconed over here we pulled them off and i'll reattach them with some hot glue and that looks great let's pull off the seal piece nice and with that natural light you can really see this finish it is absolutely smooth jordan gives me a hard time because i go around the house doing this it just feels so nice when you rub your hand over there and all your hard work and those three days of prep pays off on our ceilings we're using bare paint the interior ceiling flat we actually use this already on the project on the bathroom ceilings but it does need a quick stir oh but it does need a quick stir so let stick it in so let's give it a mix [Music] all right gang we're going to strain our paint i've got a 5 gallon strainer on a 5 gallon bucket that's clean and this paint is pretty thin so it should go right through there and that's always a danger but it's okay now i'm straining this paint because i've already opened this paint when we did the bathrooms and there might be something in here you get all this dried paint on the side of the bucket it could end up in your paint on a brand new bucket of paint i'm not going to strain it because there shouldn't be anything in there from the factory a lot of guys strain it anyway it's probably good practice now we've got all our paint strained these big buckets for the 18 inch rollers you can get these bags these things are awesome it makes cleanup a lot easier and at the end of the day if you're not done painting you can store the paint right in there by tying this up like a loaf of bread let's put this in here push the air out all right you ready bud pour most of it in here and i'm going to pour about an inch in my cut in bucket you don't want to put more than an inch because of this when i'm cutting in remember i said earlier i don't even have to look at the bucket i just dip it's going to hit the bottom and that's the perfect amount of paint tap tap and i'm ready to go no wiping on the edges because it's going to get all over the ferrule right here and then i just hook it on there and again i can do that without looking are you ready bud let's do it all right once you finish that patch in the foyer we had to take that light down that i didn't know about so there's a patch there you gotta wet sand it and texture it and then we'll prime it but i'll start cutting it in the bedrooms and you can follow in behind me in a few minutes and i'll be ahead of you all right all right so while dad is in the back of the house cutting in ahead of me so i can get behind him with a roller i'm going to get up here at this patch you can see we've got this patch oh we need to take care of that before we paint the ceilings which is what we're doing today so i've got a sponge here we're going to do something that we call blending which is when you have a drywall patch and you want to blend the new mud into the old texture then we're going to put some spray texture on there it's going to be great and since this is dry walnut it's just going to break down easily with water ah there we go you see that can you see the difference how that looks blended it's like broken up instead of like a super hard line right there that's really what we're after it doesn't take much even though this drywall mode has been here for so long and then we're going to get our spray texture we're just using a whole max wall texture we're just going to hop up here and do our best i guess i don't want to shoot it towards the crown i think this stuff has a pretty good reach i think i can just stand on the ground i'm liking that i'm gonna leave it let it dry the master will have a final say when it gets to this part of the house don't leave your wall texture lids on the ground okay how's it coming in here almost done man hey you ready yeah i'm ready it didn't take long one day you'll be as fast as me on the cut man how'd the uh ceiling come out in the foyer great no hiccups at all you got it textured one day you'll be like me nice touched all right one more in here it's all yours i'm ready [Music] look at this guy right here big old cobweb i never saw it till he spray painted all right and clean that for me bud [Music] [Music] look how nice good coverage at first i was going like this not really working because the paint is weighing the roller down right so i'm pulling up and then that works a lot better so watch this yep i'm good and we're not going all the way in and these are staying clean so the paint's not running off right right i'm not dipping that stuff all the way under yeah and that's it you do a good job that's you that's not the rover see i think i got like a little little ridge right here actually so you can hit it that's it so you cut in for like 45 minutes and i roll for four minutes and i think we got a pretty good thing set up i think you got the better end of the deal [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right man we are officially out of light which means it's time to go home my neck hurts yeah i'll give you a massage i got oh thanks and i just found out i gotta drive to new orleans so we're out all right well i'll go edit this and we'll be back here what tomorrow yep we'll knock out that ceiling start on walls what's up dude 10 gallons of paint for the walls bear marquee so the cover's in one coat give it a try we're going to give it a try all right and i got some lunch cool man well i just i just hit the the whole kitchen while you were gone cool yeah you want to come check it out absolutely we'll do a little farmer's walk yeah i was about to say yeah you got some paint on your face there bud here we go easy peasy man wow oh i can tell man that looks awesome nice how much pink we have left you know we have a pretty good amount just enough for that last bedroom exactly yep coverage on this was great too right yeah shout out to bear big shout out to bear one coat coverage and of course we're covered in white but we had all kind of stuff going on up there patches the trim color primer the ceilings are all done and they look phenomenal now in our previous video you saw jordan and i breathe new life into this old back door but we really won't get the full effect on how great it looks until we take all these pieces of paper and tape off so i say we start right here with the middle one and let's check this thing out and see how great it's going to look all right that looks great now since we put tape on there and paper we know that any paint that's on the glass was there from the previous painter right so our last step is going to get a razor blade scraper and clean both sides of the glass take off these old labels and look brand new now it's time to put some color on the wall but before we can do that we got to clean our roller setup from the ceiling paint first thing we're going to do we're going to scrape all the excess paint off of the roller with this notched radius cut out on this painters tool it removes a lot of the paint and makes cleaning the roller with the hose much easier turn a little bit take another pass [Music] now we're going to put our ceiling white paint back in the bucket i've got it all cleaned i don't want any dry paint on the edges it's going to end up in the paint later we're going to remove our bag there we go that stayed pretty clean let's cut the end i didn't cut all the way through because i don't want that piece of plastic in my paint now we can just squeeze all this out and save almost all the paint with no waste and my hands stay pretty clean there we go look at that nice all right let's go outside with the hose and clean that roller all right here we are outside and all i do to clean this is i squirt the roller and centrifugal force keeps it clean i just use the tip that comes with the aero sprayer and get a pretty heavy stream use a nozzle if you don't have one of these first thing i'm going to do as best i can like this and we get a lot of comments about paint and the grass i don't know why the grass here grows so fast now the next time this is cut you won't even tell we were here right jordan right you got to remember grass doesn't grow like this everywhere yeah in some places they paint their grass that's right because it doesn't grow it takes a little bit of time to get this clean but you know it's kind of therapeutic right after you do all that hard work painting just go clean your roller take a break and relax man i keep my rollers for a long time but the only times they end up in the trash or when mom uses them and then they don't get cleaned and i got to throw them away it makes me mad take it off of here start using some typical force [Music] there we go ready for wall paint now they make all kind of attachments you can put your roller on and spin it i just use the handle why have one more piece of equipment right and that works great all right bud ready for wall color let's do it all right all right we are ready to put up some wall color and we are back here in the master what we call the blue room because we figure if that bare paint says 100 coverage with one coat we're going to test it out on here because the rest of the house is much lighter and as you can see we've already started putting it on the walls cutting in that's what we call it and we got a pretty good feeling about it it is covering fantastic now a lot of people get intimidated when they start cutting in right this is cutting in when you're putting that paint against the base now you can roll your walls but just like you can make a mistake when you're using a pencil you just flip it over and you use the eraser right well we have a paint eraser for you come down here and check it out let me grab my paint same setup i used before nice metal bucket i got the weight of the can supported by my hand and it won't fall over because i got it hooked with my left thumb maybe that's why my left thumb is trash right now bud yeah it's like sometimes it hurts a lot so miles of doing this and again i got about an inch of paint in there so i can dip till it hits bottom and that's all the paint i need tap tap and i'm ready to go it won't drip off and as you can see i got the nail right there so the way i do it i put some paint on the wall first it acts like power steering for my paint brush it's going to glide easier i got too much on there oh sorry bud i'm going to just get down here i'm going to cut it i'm too worried about getting on the baseboard because that's where that paint eraser trick comes in now what's a paint eraser we've got a nice rag nothing too fuzzy probably some t-shirt material and a putty knife this is damp and clean water just like when we're tiling when we're dry walling when we're painting always a bucket of clean water with you to clean up we're going to put the rag over the paintbrush like that we're going to make a pass look at that beautiful got a little bit right here wipe it off let's show you that one more time but a little closer but that's what a lot of baseboard in america looks like right but with a simple putty knife and a rag and check it out you get a perfect line boom done one pass now a couple of keys for this to work you have to caulk that it's got to be a nice square corner and your paint on your base has to be absolutely dry sweet we'll do that all the way around the room well you don't have to because yeah i'll cut in you've got experience yeah now let's talk about this paint brush which edge do you use right to use this edge or this one i use them both but actually when i'm cutting in i use this one once you grab your ladder butt and let's show them what i do up at the crown now let's talk about the paintbrush i use an angled brush to cut in and most people would probably think you use this side where you have the tip where it's longer right here as your edge to cut in i actually use the other one the shorter one i'm going to show you why i'm cutting in this way i have very little paint right here i'm going to the paint's going to run dry i won't be able to go too far before there's no more paint but if i go this way i got all kind of paint over there let's make a pass going this way with this end and we'll back up we'll make another pass going this way and you're going to see the difference a little too much paint all right now that i put some paint on the wall about half an inch down from my crown i'm going to go back working right to left and i'm going to get those bristles right up there where i want them and i have complete control over the brush see i basically just have three fingers on it four fingers on it and i can flex the brush and put those bristles exactly where i want he ran out of paint at the end pick up a little more and i'm done pretty good edge right there now let's back up buddy and we'll do this section with the long point with that tip and you'll see how i'm going to run out of paint so this is how i think most people are going to cut in and this is what's going to happen to you you're going to start over here where it's wet where you left off and you start working over here to your right i can already tell i'm running out of paint it's not covering as great okay i'm out see i'm out of paint but check out the other end i got enough paint on the other end to finish this so when you're painting overhead what's happening is capillary action is drawing the paint up the bristles against gravity to the end of the brush that's how it works so we're going to use capillary action to our advantage and use this side of the brush and get some cool cutting lines so if you're using this side of the brush why don't you try it with the other side and see what works better for you but i would say an angle brush is much better for cutting in because this little tip right here does a great job for getting in all those corners all right let's pour some paint in here we're going to pour it from the bucket with the lid on now what's going to happen if i pour it like this glug glug glug glug right it's going to get all over the can let's flip it around this way see what happens look at that no glugging it's able to pull air how much you want that's good that's good yeah ease off all right not too bad but you see how well that works and it's a great trick when you're pouring like paint thinner or a solvent out of a can put it at the top so it can draw air it won't glug glugging is bad pattern or coverage yeah yeah and i can see oh i totally i'm like i'm like totally painting the windowsill all right gang this room is done and looks fantastic and we only ran into one little problem on these two walls when jordan was rolling we had a little bit of spatter on top of the baseboard it came up pretty easy with that rag and the putty knife trick we showed you but it was kind of a pain so instead on these two walls behind you we put down a piece of blue tape took me about 60 seconds and a lot of you in the comments have mentioned that you should go ahead and do that anyway when you're painting right jordan yeah and check this out not only does it help keep the baseboard clean from spatters it made my cutting job a lot easier look at that we're going to pull it off while the paint is still wet all right the ceiling looks great all the trim looks great and the walls look great and jordan even went ahead and painted over the outlets so now we don't have to buy new ones and install them that's always a pain these look as good as new all right this room looks fantastic now remember jordan and i don't get paid to paint we're general contractors we are not painters but we enjoy painting and we enjoy painting our own work so that it looks nice and you'd be surprised at what a lot of people settle for when it comes to painting if you don't believe me follow me to my house and we're going to show you what drives me crazy every day and what we try to avoid here we are in the foyer at my house come on down here and check it out we got a nice pretty tall base but look there is paint all over the top of it on the front and i don't even know what that is come over here it's the same thing let's go up the stairs right here the skirt board all over the top of that i'm going to run up there jordan now i just noticed this the back of this spindle it's got the wall paint all over it and check out the baseboard on this landing look over here there's drips all over it this was never caught and i don't know if it's showing up on the camera but this paint does not even match the wall paint one more thing i want to show you by the front door you're going to love this i guess the bottom of the front door was rotten so they cut it off and they patched it with some 2x4 see that and the paint doesn't even match got shoe laying flat we got everything here but this is just making me mad let's go back to the other project where everything's beautiful we're back at the job site it is thursday morning and we have one goal today and it's not to paint on friday we got the whole gang here today yesterday jordan i did one bedroom just to get our system down now that we know what we've got to do we're going to paint the whole rest of the house let's rock and roll [Music] [Music] uh [Music] so [Music] all right gang our goal today was to not paint on friday and we did it we got the whole house painted and right over here in the corner you see a little bit of everything our nice ceiling white our trim swiss coffee and our wall color and it looks great a few little spots we're gonna have to touch up tomorrow but i'll get in here early but uh you got that thing tomorrow right you got to sign something or what's going on we can't talk about that just yet all right what do you want to tell them i think two weeks two weeks all right big news in two weeks but for right now why don't we show them some before and afters let's do it all right while that's rolling you could get this huge spot that you missed right here i always miss one spot and there it is [Music] so [Music] man is that the last section this is it man whole house and what day and it's not even dark yet it's not dark and we also started late yep we did awesome yeah i can cut in pretty fast and you're faster than me with that thing i think so yeah after uh when you do a whole house when you're rolling like this you want to start in a spot that you don't care about then once you get that system like all the little nuances because there are definitely a lot of nuances how to hold this how to angle it how to get your pain how to roll it how to not get drips how to knock it build up on your corners and once you get the control and the nuances it's it's pretty easy and i think a lot of people would be surprised how good it would actually look and also this 18 inch roller is an absolute beast and just like that done nice now you've painted a bunch with a nine-inch roller so oh yeah besides from the fact that that's twice as fast is it is it easier it's a lot easier we've touched on this in the past but this roller right here is obviously supported from both sides so a nine inch roller um i think that if we were doing a nine inch roller like um maybe somebody who's diying it they would want to go to the store get a nine inch roller not only would we not be out of the hallway but since it's on a giant spring and it's not supportive on both ends a lot of the times you're fighting that paint build up on each seam and that can honestly like ruin your paint job i think yep and uh tell them how we store that thing at night well we can show them because we're why would you show them right now all right yeah i was gonna clean it but if i don't have to clean it that's okay with me so if you know you're gonna be painting for two or three days just cover this with some plastic i just took some of the plastic film that we used to cover the walls and stuff put a strip about a foot wide i'm just going to spiral wound it right i won't even get any paint on my hands and we'll take this end off careful all right boom put that back there we go stick that in the fridge it won't dry out and it's ready to go tomorrow all right guys the inside walls all done and it looks fantastic yeah a little bit of up but that's okay and this bear marquee paint right here fantastic job when i bought it it said one coat hide guaranteed and it made a believer out of me 240 dollars for five gallons 500 for the whole house but it was only one coat like i said typically i'm a two coat guy but this paint is unbelievable and it covered great on the blue and the yellow and the white everywhere so one coat that like button and smash it for me and jordan we really appreciate that ask a question drop a comment please subscribe and we will see you on our next video [Music]
