what we're doing is we are getting ready to polyester Prime this 1969 Corvette now Corvettes do not have a gel coat coverage on the vehicle um straight out of the factory they had a resin coat a very thin resin coat that was applied to the vehicle and then the fiberglass was then blown into the molds or hand laid however they did it and then it was processed down the assembly line to build the car now if you look really really close you can see part of the factory primer and mixed in with this Factory primer is the resin coat that was on top of the fiberglass now one of the reasons we are using a polyester primer and the primer that we're going to use is a primer called Evercoat G2 polyester primer it's a G2 generation two we're going to get to that in a few minutes once we get done with this welcome to DIY oh cool and mini The Body Shop girl it's everything you need to know about cars and more [Music] [Music] hey [Music] so the current question was basically blasted down to Bare fiberglass semi bear fiberglass when I say that we have this Walnut blasted and when we had it Walnut blasted we had them blast it down to the primer Coke which is this brown substance that you're looking at so basically what this video is about it's about priming a fiberglass car it's a little bit different to Prime this vehicle than it is to prime a metal body car or an aluminum body car for instance and that's the steps that I'm going to take you through very simple if you follow the rules and regulations of working with fiberglass you should not have any problems whatsoever so normally the way that you would start out by priming a vehicle whether it's a truck or car this that other is you would wipe it all down with wax and grease remover after you have blown it off and removed all the dust and all the trash and all the dirt from it you would come back and you would use a product called wax and grease remover on a Corvette we're going to say Corvette through this you can be working on a boat you could be working on a kit car you could be working on a whole bunch of different other stuff and that's made out of fiberglass okay and on a fiberglass car you do not want to use wax and grease remover wax and grease remover will not penetrate through the material that this car is made out of to thoroughly clean it properly so the primers and the paints will stick to it now we all know that the most important coat of paint that you will apply to this substance is your primer so this body has got to be thoroughly cleaned and the way we're going to do that we are going to use acetone so what we're looking at here this is basically acetone it's a product that is used for many many things it's a thinning product it's a cleaning solvent it's used with resins epoxies adhesives fiberglass and lacquers do you see what we just said there fiberglass fiberglass fiberglass fiberglass it's very fast drying and there's no residue left behind we need a product that's going to get into the pores of that fiberglass and thoroughly clean it 100 and this is the only product that's going to work another reason we're using this product is because this is the product that we use if we need to thin down the polyester primer this is the product that's used for doing that but it doesn't really matter about the product we're using what we need to do is clean our surf's off when we need to do it right another thing we're going to do is we're going to use some thick rubber gloves we want to protect our skin and we don't want this to penetrate into our cyst our bloodstream I actually know a few guys that actually died from using solvents all their life and never using gloves one of them got brain cancer and I got a tumor in his brain and had cancer and then his son within a year's time followed behind him and he died from cancer as well and they said that it was due to using acetone and mineral spirits without using protection so anytime that you're using something like this with your hands always protect yourself the next thing we're going to use is a product called white ball this is a lint-free tax-free towel specifically designed for paint body use you buy these by the 50 pack and you can see that they're individuals towels and they are only used for paint and body industry well you can use them for whatever you want but this is the product that is the most popular as far as I'm concerned the best on the market so we're going to saturate our Rag and then we're going to start wiping down the Corvette so we can get primer on this thing now one mistake that a lot of people make when they are cleaning off their vehicle for tanks or their products is they use a circular motion when wiping it off like they're cleaning a dish and they're thinking no that's not how you do it the way that you want to do this is you want to go back and forth just like that and you can actually see it drying look how quick that dries okay okay do you see what's going on guys all right so we got to get all this cleaned off and we got to get this tank ready this product that I'm using is the only product that will clean fiberglass 100 I'm going to tell you that right now and it's very important that you get every Speck of your fiberglass because all it takes is you missing one spot and the primer won't stick and then moisture and air Gets behind it and causes air pocket and then the next thing you know your paint and everything is peeling off in big flakes so this is the most important thing that you can do to your Corvette is wipe the thing down with acetone all right now that the car is wiped down we're gonna go ahead and let that dry for about 15-20 minutes I want to make sure that all the impurities are completely gone and once again I want to stress prep job is paint job even when it comes to a primer job the prep job that you give to your vehicle or whatever you're working on is going to be the beginning of the end you might say so if you don't prep it properly prep that surface properly I can tell you right now it will bite you in the end way way down the road so always remember to thoroughly thoroughly clean that fiberglass 100 percent using that product right there let's get down the road and let's uh start talking what we got here we got a feather fill G2 primer generation two this is the next Generation this is the advanced formula premium polyester primer surfacer very high build no shrinkage cross link cure excellent flow and leveling Sands easy fast dry to sand holds down repair and surface imperfections that's what we're looking for we're looking for a high quality primer that is going to give us the satisfaction we need to make this job all come together properly and this is where it starts now you can use a 2K High Build primer like this one you can go ahead and do that but it is not a filler primer you might say this is a 2K primer and I'm trying to explain it when I say failure I'm talking about super thick filler primer this is not a spray-on Bondo do not get these confused this primer here is a different type of primer versus this this is a high belt primer that you would normally use when you paint your vehicle this is a super high Build primer that means that this primer here is in between this primer and let's say spray on Bondo this is the primer that we want to use on fiberglass right here on our initial Prime job once we get the initial Prime job done then we can go back and prime the car with our 2K filler primer and then we can paint on top of this they say you can paint on top of this primer I don't paint on top of it this is only a base primer that I use to fill in all the imperfections that we're going to come across out of fiberglass car which might include some waves in the fiberglass possibly we might come across some crosshairs of fiberglass where we sanded through maybe or possibly the first time this car was restored they sanded through so we might come uh in contact with that and I'll show you that and I'm sure we will it always happens and we will probably come across a lot of pinholes now we're going to apply three full wet coats of this but I'm going to tell you right now the pot life once you mix the hardener and the hardener that is required is fiberglass resin hardener uh one tube per quart mix once you mix that up you only have a pot life of approximately 20 minutes you cannot mix up more than one quarter at a time because you have to clean your spray gun in between mixing the primer the reason I say that is because if you mix a cord up we're going to mix one chord at a time if you mix that cords up and then you use the cord but you leave the primer in the gun then you mix another cord up and you put it in there that's not going to mix right the first mix that you made is already starting to activate and Harden and what happens is you're going to end up throwing your spray gun in the trash once again we're going to put three full wet coats of our polyester primer on our car and then we'll let that dry now one thing about this primer they claim that this is sand ready in 78 minutes you can actually sand this in 78 minutes now I'm sure that's in normal uh weather okay we're not talking about like right now in the middle of the winter and it's 25 30 degrees outside and it's 55.60 in our booth but I always wait two to three days I don't sand it immediately I make sure that it's 199 dry and all the shrinkage and cure bleach is done to the primer before I touch it let's go ahead I want to show you this primer and it's very heavy this is a very very heavy High solids primer uh here's some information on the back uh maximum ratio 100 parts to two parts that would be what I'm going to show you uh flash time is five to ten minutes now once again this is all normal weather okay and then it says uh dry to sand time is air dries 75 to 90 minutes at 72 degrees and then it shows you Sandy here and it says on the label right here it says that they can you can sand it with 220 Grit now we're not going to use 220 grit on this I go what I do with this primer is I use it uh to one 80 grit to break the glaze off and then I do 180. once I block sand the whole car or item that I'm painting then I come back and I apply two to three coats of high build 2K primer urethane primer and then that will be my finished primer this is only used for a filler and a high-tech sealer that's it let's go ahead and get it ready so we can use it all right we went ahead and shook it up a little bit um but still this is a very hard primer to mix up thoroughly I suggest when you buy this stuff to have your Paint Body Shop store put it on a Shaker for about 20 minutes so I'm reaching down in there and you can see right there we need to really get this mixed up because that's all the solids down there that need to be mixed I'll put the lid back on it and then I'll shake it up again and then that probably should get us to where we're trying to get very very important using the G2 is that it has to be mixed up thoroughly I still got some at the bottom just gonna go ahead and mix it up still got some down there that's pretty thick now look at that all right we're ready to start mixing this stuff up I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and shake it one more time I think I'm gonna go ahead and shake it one more good time there we go [Music] so the first thing I want to do is I want to put my hardener in My Cup now the way that this primer mixes up it's one bottle of hardener for one quart of primer so now we'll go ahead and pour that in there and then we'll get that mixed up thoroughly so you got to be really careful with this little spout opening to make sure that you get all your primer inside not on the side of the gun so if you look down inside there you can see look at all that trash microscopic stuff okay very important to make sure that you strain every time I like to keep my spray equipment as clean as I can especially this particular gun it's got this screw on the lid and one other thing about this gun right here I'm going to go ahead and let you know and it's not just this one it's this brand it kind of tends to leak out of here so what I do is I take a rag and then I'll wrap it around here like that and then I tape it on there let's get out to the paint boom let's get this primer on before this stuff hardens up in the cup all right I got my [Applause] we're not going to show you the whole Prime job on this I'm just going to kind of give you an angle of how it sprays on the first coat that you put on it's going to be a transparent coat gonna cover the cover with percent you don't want to put it on super thick on your first coat that's where you start getting your runs and your imperfections and also you can get fisheye very bad if it goes on when you're spraying it and it looks transparent that's just how it goes on don't be alarmed it's a very good primer it's going to work awesome let's go ahead and get our first coat started on it and apply and then we'll come back when I'm completely done with it after three full wet coats [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you we didn't put three coats on there we went ahead and put four coats all right but you can see this is a very very heavy heavy filler primer this is not a spray-on Bondo by any means it's a filler primer it's a polyester filler primer and it seals and contains itself but the real trick is is making sure that the surface is properly cleaned so what you just saw is basically how to prime a fiberglass car um now you could use 2K primer if you want to but on this particular car because it doesn't have a gel coat I went ahead and used the polyester filler primer versus the 2K primer this is Pete my friend Pete your friend Pete priming cars trying to get them out of my shop and uh not having a good time I can tell you that not having a good time and the reason I'm not having a good time is because I was in the middle of making a live video actually on this car here how to block sand um Bondo on fiberglass uh prepping it up for primer and I actually went back to sit on my chair and there was a box on my chair and I lost my balance of course trying to sit down and I flipped backwards and I fell on my tailbone and then of course I bounced my head off of the concrete which it still hurts now well I guess they had kind of does right here this is where I bounced it off I believe right there but uh that was actually a week ago today was it today or yesterday yeah a week ago yesterday so my tailboat is killing me and you do not want to have tailbone damage tailboat damage is serious situation it's gonna take six to 12 weeks for that thing to heal up I don't know if it's bruised or cracked but I can tell you it's excruciating pain even aspirin doesn't do anything for it this is Pete my friend Pete your friend Pete um out here working with damage to my tailbone and getting her done the right way not the wrong way thanks for watching DIY Automotive School classes don't stop till you know everything haha
