okay what we got here we got a door uh what's this door off of partner uh 63 Mercury Comet this is a 63 Mercury Comet door now we got Justin with us and where did you come from Justin where you at s County Utah Now where's that close to Manti E from okay man Utah I'm going to a car show out there are you going to be there yeah I went to high school in manai okay so we'll talk about manai later but what you did is you tried to lay some Flames down on your doors now you're going for the' 60s look of course and you weren't happy with the flames you just told me uh you just told me on camera here that you went through 10 rolls to get to where you were at you got pictures of that we can look at here Justin yeah let me see him okay so we got Justin how you doing bud Shake hand make a friend There You Go Justin Bond okay so what do you got now you got a 63 well look here's where I started I practiced on some we go look how bad that is yeah I just cut out some now why do you think that's bad look how skinny they are they they wobble there they I don't know okay but then I got to got to there little more practicing that looks all right and then I did uh now is that your car you painted no no that's what I wanted okay that's kind of what you're wanting then I did the the inside of the doors at the top mhm what was wrong with those I didn't like it too skinny on the ends I thought then I got to the doors themselves okay can I go ahead and talk now sure now that actually looks pretty good I'm going to tell you why you're not really looking at it as a finished product you're just looking at it as the work he did yeah the reason I say that you say they look skinny right can I go ahead and talk for a minute yeah the reason they look that way is cuz they're not pinstriped if you put pinstripe on that's going to fatten them up does that make sense yeah so you should always look at Flames unfinished until they're outlined professionally and and done right okay so your flame job on there actually looks pretty good now I would say that this one here's kind of a fish hook look and this one here is kind of scraggly but that one actually came out pretty good so what we're going to do is we're going to try to get your flames down for you you traveled all this way out here from Manti how far is that 3 hours that's a three-hour drive now when you called me on the phone you said you were going to paint them white am I right yeah and I told you did you put some DBC on that and you said DBC 500 you said you didn't even know what that was I didn't now what that is it's a special in coat clear that you mix with reducer only and you spray it on top of the paint that you're going to do the artwork on now do you see me touching this I'm not going to ruin that white paint if you would not how to put that on there then you'd have finger F prints on it you'd have grease and oil you would have you put tape on it you'll have tape marks and all this other crap see I didn't even put that on last time I just put well flames right on you're lucky it didn't peel the paint off when you did it yeah so that's where we got to start you went ahead and did this what we're going to do is we're going to lay some Flames down on this for you it shouldn't take 10 rolls it shouldn't even take a whole roll uh I was in your shoes at one time I want you to remember that I had to learn like you did all right by your mistakes but we're going to go ahead and put some flames on your door and then I'm going to show you how to transfer them from one door to the other where they're exactly the same welcome to DIY Automotive school with my friend Pete and mini The Body Shop girl it's everything you need to know about cars and more [Music] a [Music] [Music] okay so the first thing we're going to do to put our flames on here uh what we just heard from Justin is he went ahead painted it white now is this a pearl white or this his bright white or what Justin Olympic White okay so we got white paint on it and then he put a coat of DBC 500 on it what that is that's an in coat clear house the color makes it you mix it 50/50 with reducer you put two quick coats and you're done we got to prep this up so we can go ahead and Flame it out do you understand what I'm saying all right here we go so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to get our sponge we're going to load it with water we're going to take a flex block do you see that Justin this is a flex you have one of these we're going to wrap it with 1500 do you see what I just did we're going to go ahead and Sam this real quickly okay you didn't put a lot of that DBC on here you must put really thin coats cuz look what I did on accident now are you going to bring the paint to this line or are you actually going right to there or is that where Chrome goes I guess okay so we don't have to sand there so what we're going to do is we're going to lightly scuff this down and what you another thing when you use the DBC 500 over your paint and then you go over it with your, 1500 what that does that's actually a clear coat and it makes when you put the clear on it makes the clear deeper so it's kind of basically uh uh double clear is what you're doing to it and you can see I'm barely sanding it this is all you got to do so you only want to sand with, 1500 bud you don't want to sand with anything else okay all right so this is prepped bud that's all you got to do see okay so we got that scuffed down we know there's no dust specks in it we know there's no trash am I right now did you paint this in your garage at home or where' you paint it yeah homemade paint booth okay well the paint booth really looks like it's working good for you all right so what we got here we got a nice clean surface the next thing we're going to do we wiped it down we dried it off we're going to get our tape out can you give me the tape you got Justin please okay that's I told you to get e inch isn't that blue blue no this is like half inch dude this ain't fine line blue tape okay this is not e inch tape this is there's five of them in there oh there is oh okay I'm sorry I was looking at one H I've never seen this brand before huh yeah it is I'm sorry wow made in China too probably okay there you go all right let's look at your pictures over here and see what we got so this is basically what he's going for right here now is that the kind of flames you want well I don't know I tried different ones okay now how did you how did you come up with this design on the computer Photoshop and I just cut and pasted some so this is kind of simple and easy right here that's what I tried see there's my so that's that's kind of easy and simple uh we're getting a little more exotic going with that one I like that one better um and then of course this one here would be more like your 80s style Flames to see how fat they are and then you only got one or two let's just do this why doesn't my friend Pete lay some Flames out we'll see where we're going with it and go from there we're going to start out now the Flames are going to come from here and go that way am I correct this is the back of the door this is the front of the car this is all going to be red right here it is and then you're going to have the Flames come in like this right yeah then there's trim that goes all the way back and right okay so we're going to start right here and then we're going to come around like this and then I'm going to bring it around like this watch this and then I'm going to go like that and when you do The Flames you got to do one motion dude see when you stop look what happens see that that ain't going to work all right so we're going to throw that away do you see all right so we're going to come over here this is our red paint that's going to go into it we're going to come back down we're going to go like this and you got to make a continuous line you can't okay we're going to stop it right there dude that doesn't look like a flame does it it doesn't look like a flame does it no it doesn't look like okay so we're going to go like this watch I'm going to come over here I'm going to take this flame right here and then I'm going to go like this cuz I have a feeling you want yours kind of big and fat dude okay I don't like that do you like that no so we're going to get another piece of tape we're going to go like this watch we're going to come over here we're going to come out here we're going to try to follow that line and then we're going to go a little bit slower see the problem is is when you stop that's when it messes up starting to look like flame now yeah okay so we're going to come over here then we're going to go like this see how I did that now watch look see how I went a little wider so it looks funky mhm you got to follow this line see see how these ones look normal see what I'm saying yeah now I don't know where your door handle ends up on here that's the problem we're going to have in this area I can't so what we're going to do is watch we're going to start over that's the lock okay well we don't know where the Lock's going to end up we don't want it overriding our flame yeah does that make sense yeah so you got to keep all this in concept so instead of wasting that nice beautiful line that I made watch what I do I'm going to come right here and then I'm going to bring it down just a little farther and it doesn't really matter if you it doesn't really matter Justin if your lines are a little bit scraggly because the pin striper person will be able to fix them you see what I mean uhhuh does that make sense huh yeah when you get the pin stripe on them that's going to straighten it all out and make it look nice okay they put that over the clear coat yeah okay so see that line I'm not watching my tape I'm watching that line so I'm going to start right here and then I'm going to go like this I'm going to bring it out to where the thickness I want and then I'm going to follow that line look and then I'm going to get right to where that curve stops and then I'm going to start going like this and see how I screwed up cuz I moved my thumb butd so we're going to start again now we're just going to see where it goes okay let's just see what happens you tell me what you think so then I'm going to come over here I'm going to follow that line again now watch what I do here bud I'm going come up here I'm going to make a big loop like this now watch this I'm going to go like that that's not making sense is it not really when you made that Loop you turn your tape sideways you come around no I'm just holding it and going like this okay so that ain't making sense is it now watch this bud so we're going to go right here we're going to come down here and another thing you want to pay attention to is how wide they are you want them all to be the same width but see that hump right there watch see we can't get that that hump so I got to come all the way I don't want to ruin that so I'm going to go ahead and we'll just go ahead and do the best we can with it there we go so we're going to make this one go way up here and then we'll come around like that and then we're going to go like this right there dude okay see what I'm doing mhm all right are you liking it or no looks good okay and then we're going to take it like this and that's what's good about using the tape you can always just take it off and start over I like to try to get it with one try so you want to keep it about the same width remember I'm not watching this line I'm looking at this line see what I'm saying see what I'm doing in here and that's probably going to end it for us right there bud so you got one flame here you got this one coming and going under that one and then you got this one here that's going to come back and finish it out watch now is the Chrome going to go right to this line yeah it doesn't override the white it goes right to that line there no it comes above it goes right along this Edge okay all right so that's good cuz uh this is kind of a busy flame job going on so I'm watching that Top Line look what I'm doing I want to make sure that they're uniform I'm going to come up like this one time and then I'm going to go like this Bud there you go what are you thinking yeah bad ass do you like it or not yeah I like those okay so we got our Flames down look how much tape I used and that stuff works good yeah 18 bucks for five now when those get pinstriped they're really going to look nice okay you got to understand when you first lace Flames they look fat you know why because you're looking at the outside of the line dude you're not looking on the inside so when you set your flames down you want to make them fatter than what you really think they should be because when you pull the tape off they're going to get skinnier you got an e/ inch here and an E8 inch there how much is that that's a/ quarter inch that's why you should always use the e/ inch and not the thicker stuff because you're going to look at the you're not going to look at the inside you're going to be looking at the outside you're going to think oh that's how fat the Flame's going to be yeah am I right or wrong you're right you understand what I'm saying now okay so you want to make sure that those are down now remember we put DBC on here I just want to remind everybody now now we got two choices we can have this one go over this or you and this underneath or this can be on top and that underneath which one do you want that one on top you want this one on the top yeah okay if you want that on top what do we got to do we got to cut these two out yeah and then that'll look like goes under yeah okay okay what do you think it's up to you yeah this one on top you want the little one on the top so what you do is you take your xacto knife and then what you're going to do is you're going to cut it right on that line bud and you're not even going to cut you're just going to push hard enough to get the tape off because you don't want to cut the paint [Music] [Music] [Music] see you see what I'm saying mhm so if you want this one on top you got to take care everything out of it that's on top of it that's inside it then you take your xacto knife and you go like this if we can get that off okay how's that looking see how I'm doing that so you get that off and my opinion about this tape dude it sticks very strong now how's that look good does that look like a nice hot rod flame mhm so you got this one going underneath this one's on top and you got these two this one right here that looks good the only thing I don't like is I don't like this right here now the reason I say this is cuz this is like okay it doesn't have that curve to it maybe so what I was going to do is we're going to take instead of taking this one off which would be very hard to let's do this let's take this off of here right so we're going to go ahead and do this and then we're going to start over and then see I [ __ ] up see it's starting to look like a banana there see how they look almost the same now there we go and then what we're going to do is we're going to bring this way up here like this see there yeah and then bring it down actually you know what we're going to do we're going to go like this watch this Justin we're really going to get nice with this we're going to do this right here and then go like that one more time how's that sound to you that's been cool you like that yeah I think that'll look even better yeah you got one coming this way you got one that way and then we'll end it off see okay so I mean it's just a matter of using your mind and doing the job the way you're supposed to okay so now remember you always got to keep in mind the thicknesses you don't want one too skinny see this one here so we're going to kind of make it that wide and it's just going to go like this and then we'll come like that then go like that bam now that's a nice swame job dude now let's say that we were going to Flame this whole door right we would have took these Flames moved them up here we would have then we would have flipped the door around and then we would have took another line down here like that one and did a s line where they all curved in and then it would look like full Flames okay but since we're just filling in this wide area that's all you need so since we got this one going over see how that's going over let's put this one under all right you want to go ahead and do that so we got to take this here this exact when I cuz the one that you want to show you got to take the other one out yeah you got to take okay so if you want this one to if you want this one to show then everything on top of it's got to come out I see so I'm going to let you do that so you got to make four cuts and you got to make sure they're right on this line here where they don't hang overhang you sure yes so we got Justin learning how to do Flames um he traveled 3 hours to come on over here and um I kind of felt sorry for him when he talked to me on the phone and you can push a little hard you know just push enough just to cut through there you go that should be enough it doesn't take much to cut that let me see it bud you got to use the exact the blade at an angle kind of and then pick it up like that all right go ahead and get that and pull hold on did you cut this end I think so okay pull it slow make sure you pull it all the way up there you go and now did you cut these two no okay so we're going to cut this one right here we're going to come over and cut this one right here now when you get them pinstriped the lady will know where to pinstripe when you take your tape off all right there's going to be let me show you what's going to happen Okay there so that there's pretty nice Flames I really like the way that we did this I'm glad that we redid this line we made this one flow to make it look like these two this one here see and then we made this one come back around so you got one on top one on the bottom what we want to do now is we want to copy these flames and transfer them to the other door am I right yeah I'm going to show you how to do that [Music] oh
