hey we got a question for you what do you do with your leftover mashed potatoes mind if we make a suggestion like someone did to us how about potato cakes you want to see how we're doing this on the fit boss sierra griddle stick around while we dig in [Music] hey welcome back i'm adam i'm brett and we are the wall twins if this is your first time here with us though welcome consider subscribing and hit the notification bell so you don't miss anything that we do here in the backyard diner even when we're just doing something with our leftover foods uh yeah and it's simple it's not even a leftover meal it's a leftover item mashed potatoes right which is very surprising for us to have leftover mashed we potatoes those usually but not this time not when we make them specifically for a video to be used we did i did actually prepare these i did prepare these mashed potatoes today for this cooking only because this has been requested so many times and i kind of brushed it over in fact somebody had even emailed us their homemade recipe but i did want to say as i was looking at getting some ideas for this i came across none other than the hungry husky he did these so simply and he made him look so phenomenal i'm like we gotta do them plus it's it's hussy guy knows how to throw down good groceries speaking of groceries right get to the grocery so people know what we're talking which by the way is almost exactly like what matt had because he made him look so good so it's what he does all right well here you can go as you can see leftover mashed potatoes let's get to the cook i'm just kidding we're going to be adding in some cheddar cheese some green onions or chives we're going to be seasoning it with the a little bit of the usual suspects and then we're going to mix in eggs and flour as well right so the funny thing about this is i was looking how to do this i i literally thought the first time you do it you take your leftover potatoes right onto the grill not how it works and i love seeing it i love seeing hussy's take because it was basically turning it into well like you would a pancake batter a little bit of flour some eggs and other things we are going to be using butter to really uh soften these up i know sometimes right and flavor i know sometimes people will throw in a little bit of oil to help soften it or make it a little bit more liquidy these are left over so they are a little bit harder so if we need to we'll add what we need to but that said it should be a relatively quick cook if i'm not mistaken it's like three minutes per side you get a nice gbd golden brown delicious on each side you flip it over and then you're left with some nice soft gooeyness that cheese melting and he did add onions i did have an onion we were ready to cut up and put in here brett and i talk and brett's like you know i'm not feeling onions today and i'm okay with that so the chives are going to do so we'll put some of the chives in it and then also hopefully if we remember on the outside is a garnish sometimes to make it look pretty all the time we forget the garnish let's get to the cookie more often than we'd like to admit all the time all right brett's going to be walking us through this process but you know we do get questioned all the time what's with the gloves why do you guys always wear gloves partly it's to remind us of food safety a lot of times we know specifically when we're touching raw meats and other things we want to uh be careful but honestly brett as often as not what is it for uh just to keep our hands clean and dry all right it makes it super nice so we love it but go ahead and let's go ahead basically we're just gonna make kind of a batter so we're gonna toss the eggs in the two eggs in to the mashed potatoes the mashed potatoes here we go all right we're going to toss the cheese in because why not and hussy was really careful about how much of the flour he put in and then by the end he's like you know i ended up using all of it so we're going to go ahead and probably toss in all of that just sprinkle it in there and kind of mix it up and like i said oh yeah just a handful of those chives because we'll use the rest for afterwards and then go ahead and mix it up and if it's too dry which is i'm guessing it's still going to be pretty dry i'm guessing it's still going to be pretty dry we will go ahead and just we'll add a little bit of oil as needed [Music] and brett that looks just about perfect everything just about evenly mixed i think we're ready to go toss it on the griddle the griddle's out and ready to go let's do this all right one thing i did forget to add is the usual suspect so i'm gonna add just a little bit in there there we go and say when when because the potatoes were already salt and peppered so this will just add to the rest of that mix and kind of give it that does have garlic and uh onion powder so we do get some of that flavor in there as well okay uh those were just a little bit thick so we added about a tablespoon of water after adding the usual suspects yeah let me add a butter add a butter add a little butter and then try right there there you go and these aren't going to be perfectly shaped okay that's good and when we flip them we'll kind of spread them out a little bit we'll kind of flatten them down let's go right there those are there we go that's what i'm talking about okay next i think i might have enough for one more after this you think so yeah gather it gather all the chicks all right so we're gonna let those go now they're not gonna flatten a whole lot just now they're not gonna be perfectly shaped hussies weren't either and guess what his turned out beautifully so we're going to give them about three it's like hussy we're going to give these about three minutes i'm just trying to shape that a little bit more oh those ones in the middle are already browning up i can already see oh my gosh let me take a peek okay oh man those are cooking up nice what is that this seems to be my hot zone so i'm checking that one first they're browning up nice brad getting some nice gbd and i can tell right now the back of my griddle is definitely turning uh cooking hotter than the front so let me move some of these around to find some of my hotter zones all right oh it looks like a pancake that's what it's supposed to look like like i said i wanted to flatten it a little bit so when it cooks we might flatten it one more time get it uh go in there really oh and mess that one up so by the way when you're flopping making sure make sure you're uh you're paying attention i wasn't paying attention i didn't have it all the way under and it fell over oh snap but hey it's not going to affect the taste i can promise no and we will flip it one more time get a little bit more gbd on there and we'll call it again do you smell this like seriously i i'm trying to decide if it smells like a fry a fried burger a joint with the fries going or if it's like a uh uh like a restaurant that's selling uh steak and mashed potatoes that's honestly yeah look at that oh dude that was perfect flatten it just a bit because why not can you tell i have a joy for cooking i'm not even doing the cooking i'm like cheering you on the sidelines punching me in the arm like i don't know you did it like the play of the game [Music] all right one more flip on the first one there we go i'm just flipping it one more time getting a little bit crispier we're gonna make the rounds here yeah still needs plenty of time there my messed up one here as my second one see if we can get a little better okay so see i can go a little bit longer on that side so typically you want to flip it one and done but you know what i want a little gbd extra on these all right brett those are just about done uh we're just gonna go ahead and get ready to oh man that's gbd right there brett want to get a flip his flip is better than mine where if i where why was i doing this you wanted to do it listen remember even our pancake cook i dig into early you're the better flipper you have more patience than i do give them a couple more minutes and then we're going to go this one's ready to pull right here okay [Music] [Music] well there it is and the night has gotten darker and darker and we let these sit because i went to go take a like a field test earlier and i about burned off my my finger they were screaming hot it's been less than 10 minutes now they're they're a little bit solid it is cold but we call cold here in florida about mid 50s yeah 50s so we've got we've been warming up by the griddle but these are still hot and hot enough to try yes now very simple we didn't really know exactly how to dress him i know hussy said he loves it with sour cream also with ketchup and other things so i'm just excited to try it by itself it's got that melted cheese in there i wanted gravy there we go he did one great you talked about it but like we say it can look amazing yeah it looks amazing i've enjoyed this whole process and they look like pancakes but they're potato cakes i i do want to say this when i just did that with my plate i almost it almost launched and that's when brett was the only one that got to try it you almost got to taste the potato cakes before i did like we say it can smell amazing can i get a smell yeah smell yeah you can and brett had made the point he can't tell if it tastes like a fast food joint with the french fries or like a restaurant with like the steak and potatoes and it absolutely is a mix of both yes it is potato smell is so good oh yeah but if this doesn't taste amazing then this was all for not oh geez let me go ahead and just pull this out right cheers i'll eat to that my brother pillow we saw okay i was not expecting that i know promise you i was not expecting so it's great because you get the nice a light crisp on the outside so it has a quick of like a fry but then immediately it's mashed potatoes straight mashed potatoes on the inside i don't lie i make some good mashed potatoes adam does make but i honestly was not with it we can taste cheddar cheese oh i haven't tried with cream cheese yet how about sour cream we have sour cream not green cheese i went right along with what he was saying wow oh man notable oh man here we go let's try did you try it yet i did oh my gosh hussy's right with sour cream so good and i bet with cream cheese it'd be good too yeah we can try that oh my stars listen i almost like it better without the sour cream i don't know it's good but those are really good and i am super super impressed i'm not kidding so i know that the mashed potato was good but i thought okay how's it going to be cooking it on the griddle and then they were they were working out okay but as i was having troubles getting under there messing them up i'm like i'm just going to screw these up they're going to get overcooked wow and i will tell you i almost prefer this to just a regular mashed potato like you said with some gravy or something on that would be amazing the one thing i was thinking was like what could what could we do this with because this is so amazing it can't just be this one and done i would like to do kind of like a poo a poutine type thing where it's got the gravy the beef the cheese curds um on the cakes almost so instead like it's like a pancake right where you fill it with like breakfast stuff it would be a potato cake with that type of stuff topped on make a stack of them whatever so we might do we might do 2.0 on this one and i'm really really impressed this is typically a side dish and i could put this with any i was just thinking through my head i mean fried chicken anything you could really put this one yeah absolutely even to serve these up by themselves i mean think about it you have a baked potato right so you could do like a loaded baked potato cake like a load of that okay oh my stars this
