this video is a supplement to the residential garage door installation video it covers installation of extension springs use this video if you are installing an extension spring with your garage door working with any springs can be dangerous make sure you follow all safety warnings in the manual and on this video and read the safety information completely before proceeding with the installation of Springs do not attempt to install them yourself unless you have the right tools reasonable mechanical aptitude or experience carefully follow these instructions to avoid personal injury or property damage use the instructions in this video for installing extension springs only if you're missing any spring hardware call the toll-free consumer services number found on the front cover of the manual take a moment to lay out the tools and materials that you will need in this video we will be installing springs for a single door see your manual or supplemental manual for the hardware needs of the door that you will be installing for a single door your hardware should include two extension springs four sheaves two sheave forks for sheave bolts two five sixteenths inch eye bolts one safety spring containment kit 2 3 hole adjustment kits two s hooks two black bushings four five sixteenths inch flange nuts and four three eighths inch flange nuts now that you have everything in one convenient place we are ready to get started the first thing to do is to assemble the springs with sheaves using a three-eighths inch by one and one-quarter inch bolt to attach the sheave next we will attach a sheave in the third hole on the angle approximately four inches from the wall on both sides using a three-eighths inch by one and one-quarter inch bolt and a three-eighths inch washer and nut make sure you place the head of the bolt on the door side then attach the eye bolts with one 5/16 inch nut on each side of the rear hanger about 12 inches above the track to keep the spring assembly from dragging on the track and then tighten the eyebolt nuts if your head room area is small the eye bolts can be as low as 4 inches above the track now carefully raise the door and prop it open about half way since this is the first time the new doors being opened proceed slowly and carefully if the tracks are not correctly aligned or the back hangers are not strong enough for the door the door may fall also the door will be very heavy without the help of the springs so make sure you have two or more people to help you again working slowly and carefully while you lift the door check that the horizontal tracks are parallel with each side of the door with the door open about halfway make sure the rollers do not come out of the top brackets more than about one half inch if adjustment of the rear hangers is necessary lower the door first to remove the weight from the rear hangers next carefully raise the door so that it's fully open and place C clamps on both sides of the track below the bottom rollers to keep the door from moving check again to be sure that the horizontal tracks are parallel with the edges of the door and that the rollers do not come out of the hinges or brackets hook the ends of the springs over the eye bolts at the rear track hangers if not already done attach the loop of a cable over the button on the bottom bracket thread the cable up over the stationary sheave and continue the cable over and around the sheave on the springs then tie the cable to the three hole adjusting clip exactly as you see here hook the cable to the horizontal angle with an s hook and adjust the knot at the three hole adjusting clip so that all spring tension is relieved and the cable holds the springs above the horizontal track the spring should be stretched the same on both sides of the door make sure you attach the warning tag found in the white envelope to the spring assembly if it's not already attached next we will install the safety containment kit remember garage door extension springs can cause serious injury and property damage if they break under tension and are not secured with safety cables so make sure to tie one end of the 1/8 inch containment cable to the rear track hangers tie the cable as shown here thread the cable through the center of the extension spring and through the bushing in the she fork and tie the remaining end to the horizontal angle as shown make sure you do this for each of the springs now we are ready to adjust extension spring tension make sure to use extreme care when readjusting extension springs and make sure that the door is carefully secured by C clamps in the open position before you begin note that when the door is closed the springs and mounting hardware are under extreme tension and are potentially dangerous adjust the tension by moving the S hooks to different holes in the horizontal track angles or by adjusting the cable in the three whole clip both sides must be adjusted equally moving the hooks closer to the door opening increases tension tension can also be adjusted slightly by releasing spring tension and relocating the eye bolts higher on the track hanger when reinstalling the higher the eye bolt the greater the tension make your adjustments so that the weight of the door is about the same going up or going down congratulations this completes the installation procedure for standard extension springs
