[Music] hi my name is Anita Mecca Don and I'm here today with Joe and Janine to show you how easy it is to install and finish drywall your spell before we begin my friends and I national gypsum wanna remind you to always follow the manufacturer's specifications and the best practices we'll cover here to keep you safe so let's get to it step 1 measure and estimate our wall is constructed with two-by-four wood studs that are spaced 16 inches apart step 1 figuring out how much drywall will actually need for our project measure the height and length of each wall as well as the width and length of your ceiling with your tape measure make sure you account for any waste and allow for 10 to 15 percent extra material in this case we have 192 square feet so we need six sheets of half-inch 4 by 8 drywall for the walls and ceilings for this project we're installing purple mold and moisture resistant drywall now as a rule of thumb you'll also need 1 5 gallon bucket of joint compound for every 500 square feet of drywall which is approximately 15 sheets of 4 by 8 for a complete list of tips and tools be sure to visit ask for purple comm step 2 material storage and handling lay your drywall on the floor like this to keep it flat this is also the safest way to store your material it's a small step but also an important one if it's going to be a few days before you start your project step 3 hanging ceilings now we're ready to hang the board it's important that you start with the ceiling first to prevent sag make sure you hang the board perpendicular to the ceiling framing for this project we're gonna use our screw gun and one and a quarter inch coarse thread drywall screws space your screws twelve inches apart starting at the center of the board and working your way out this ensures that the my wall is flat and firm to the framing step for fasteners when driving your screws avoid tearing the face paper and slightly indent the screw head so that it's barely below the paper surface step 5 hanging walls now that we have the ceiling done let's focus on the walls drywall may be applied vertically or horizontally for this job we'll hang it horizontally hang the top sheet tight to the ceiling board screw in near the top corner and space your fasteners 16 inches apart ensure that all drywall end joints like this are centered on the framing once the top sheets are attached hang the bottom sheets tight to the top sheet to avoid any gaps ideally you want to leave approximately a 3/8 inch gap between the floor and the bottom of the board step six cutting and scoring if you have to cut the board after making your measurements draw a line using a t-square take your utility knife and score along that line deep into the core after that score you need to cleanly snap the drywall away from the cut and run the knife so that you cut the back paper if you don't have a clean edge don't worry you could always use a utility knife or a rasp to smooth those rough edges step 7 electrical boxes most walls will have an electrical outlet so how do we measure and cut for this opening it's easy starting from the floor measure up to the bottom of the box next you have to measure from the adjacent panel to determine the distance to the side of the box once located drawing the box dimensions and then cut it with a keyhole saw step 8 finishing joints and fasteners now that your walls and ceilings have been hung it's time to finish the board be sure to start with the joints and fastener heads for this we're gonna need joint compound drywall paper tape and finishing tools such as a taping knife these are the most critical steps for determining the final appearance of your wall step 9 joint compound using a mixing paddle we've got our XP load us joint compound mixed to the creamy consistency we're looking for this joint compound is mold resistant and lessens the amount of dust in the air you can also use a hand tool to mix your mud use a four-inch taping knife to apply enough mud to cover the entire joint once that's done embed your drywall paper tape do this by running your knife firmly across the joint and pressing the tape into the mud during this time you'll also want to apply mud to all the fastener heads be sure to wipe off any excess once this is done let it dry for 24 hours step 10 finishing inside corners finishing inside corners may seem a little more challenging but that's easy to apply a sufficient amount of joint compound to both sides of the joint using your drywall paper tape fold your tape in half forming an angle apply this tape to the inside corner and again using your taping knife press it firmly into the mud on both sides making sure you have enough mud under the tape is critical to ensure the tape properly adheres then you want to let this dry 24 hours as well step 11 finishing vertical joints if you have a vertical joint you'll treat it just like the other joints but you have to be careful not to use excess mud to get a better appearance you may also want to consider feathering out the joint with a wider taping knife step 12 joint compound second coat now that our first coat is dry we need to apply our second coat of mud over all the joints using an 8-inch taping knife and a smaller taping knife for the fasteners feather this coat about two inches beyond the edges of your first coat again be careful to remove any excess joint compound as you progress with finishing be mindful of the amount of mud that you are applying as it will affect the amount you're sanding again let this dry for 24 hours step 13 sanding second coat now our joints and fasteners are ready to be sanded using a sanding pole with a fine sanding screen lightly sand off any uneven areas and excess mud the goal is to smooth out the surface but you don't want to over sand or you may tear your drywall paper step 14 joint compound third coat now it's time for our final coat of joint compound using a 12-inch taping knife again apply the joint compound over all joints use a smaller taping knife for your fastener heads you want to feather your final coat about two inches beyond the edges of your second coat for this step you want to apply a thin layer of mud to feather out all joints and fasteners with the overall goal of creating a nice smooth surface remove all excess joint compound and let it dry for 24 hours step 15 sanding third coat for the final finishing step lightly sand your walls and ceilings until they're smooth like this when complete remove all the dust with a damp rag or sponge and let it dry this will ensure that your walls and ceilings are ready to be primed and painted top five tips so that's it easy right just make sure to keep the following tips in mind one pick purple drywall for your project to ensure your walls are built to last to be certain you have the right tools before you start three measure twice cut once four you can never be too safe so use the appropriate safety gear and five ask a friend to help for easier installation on behalf of Joe Janene and national gypsum I'm a nature mecca dog thanks for watching and be sure to ask for purple
