hi i'm wayne drake president of compound miter and author of crown molding and trim install it like a pro over 400 000 copies of the book have been sold since 2003. if you've ever tried to install crown molding and trim you've probably discovered it's no easy task especially for the beginner but don't worry our second edition book covers every detail with easy to use instructions and is the only book you'll find anywhere that covers crown molding on the slope ceiling the book uses a simple three-step method which allows you to make the perfect cut each and every time plus you get unprecedented free tech support just email me or call me and i'll be more than glad to assist you step one measure the corner angle with your true angle tool then read the angle directly on the tool dial step two obtain your miter and bevel setting from the tables in the book the tables contain over 24 000 saw settings and will cover any and all possible compound miter cuts step 3 use the crown molding templates as a visual cue to set your saw using the miter and bevel from step 2. the crown molding templates provide all of the setup requirements needed use the templates and you will never make the wrong type of cut horizontal turns vertical turns and ceiling turns are the only three types of turns that you can make with crown molding joint a is a horizontal turn joints b and c are vertical turns and joints d and e are turns in the plane of the ceiling called ceiling terms all crown molding templates have been used for this example joint a for example was set up using crown molding templates number one and number two joint b was set up using templates five and six and so on notice that the ceiling turns joints d and e also use the horizontal turn templates one through four as well both horizontal and ceiling turn templates are the same shape most professional installers will tell you that the only way to install crown molding on a sloped ceiling is to make corner blocks at each of the joint locations this is simply because they do not have the right tools or information crown molding and trim install it like a pro will provide all of this in an easy to understand language for the beginner and the professional alike i'm going to show you just how easy it is to install crown molding on this complex room with 20 degree slope ceilings and 21 corners always start by identifying the corners that require ceiling turns remember this all outside wall corners in a room with a sloped ceiling must be a ceiling turn i have marked all the outside wall corners as ceiling turns also remember all outside wall corners must be paired with an adjacent inside corner and the inside corner turned in the ceiling plane also this is done to correct the crown molding spring angle for example corner 3 is paired with corner 4 corner 6 is paired with corner 7 and so on we now have all of our ceiling turns identified corners 20 and 21 cannot be ceiling turns because each corner has two different ceiling slopes horizontal and 20 degrees these corners are explained on page 49 which i will show later in this video the remainder of the corners will all be horizontal or vertical turns or a combination of each the plan view is now complete and we're ready to install the crown molding let's look at corners one and two the angled 45 degree wall is very common in today's construction the angle wall is often used for a fireplace or a tv entertainment system corner one is a horizontal and vertical turn combination joint a is 135 degree corner horizontal turn and joint b is 195 degree corner vertical turn the crown molding at joint b turns upward and follows the 15 degree slope ceiling to corner 2. corner 2 has two vertical turns and one horizontal turn corner 3 must be a ceiling turn so i have paired it with corner four corners three and four are ceiling turns corners five is a vertical turn and is where both ceiling slopes meet joint a is an inside vertical turn with a 140 degree corner angle corners 6 and 7 are ceiling turns joint a is an outside corner and joint b is an inside corner corner 8 is a horizontal and vertical turn combination joint a is a vertical turn and joint b is a horizontal turn corners 9 through 12 are all ceiling turns this situation occurs when the crown is going horizontal on the low wall and you come to something that protrudes into the room this could be a bookcase fireplace cabinet or even a short wall all of these turns are ceiling turn corner 13 is the mirror image of corner 8. joint a is a horizontal turn and joint b is a vertical term corners 14 through 17 are ceiling turns this situation occurs when the crown is going up or down the slope and you come to something that protrudes into the room this again could be a bookcase fireplace cabinet or even a short wall all of these turns are sealing terms corner 18 is the same as corner 5. joint a is a vertical turn corner 19 is the same as corner 8 and the mirror image of corner 13. joint a is a vertical turn and joint b is a horizontal turn as i mentioned earlier corners 20 and 21 are not ceiling turns because each turn has two ceiling slopes associated with it corner 20 is a combination of two vertical turns and a horizontal turn then the crown can continue on down the hallway corner 21 is the mirror image of corner 20. if you wish to stop the crown molding at any location you can make a crown return the crown return piece for a sloped ceiling gets an extra cut on the top which will be a vertical turn with a corner angle equal to twice the ceiling slope or 40 degrees in our example a crown return can also be accomplished at corner 21. as you can see from this video crown molding can be installed on any sloped ceiling it's all in having the right information and the tools to do the job so throw away all those jigs and that tedious coping saw the crown molding and trim book allows you to use your compound miter saw the way it was meant to be used a properly mitered and glued joint will never separate and will not require any caulk visit us online or call our toll-free number and purchase the book and tools you need for your crown molding project if you have any corners in your home that were not covered in this video email me a plan view and photos of each corner and i will be glad to tell you how to install it like a pro thank you you
