the ceramic tile backsplash we said in part one is ready to be grouted coming up next on the at home channel at build a PD accom well morning Cory looks like tiles all set in place now we're ready to do some grouting okay what do we need for the job then well these are some of the basic tools we got a grout float okay help move the grout around get it into the joints real good write a grant scrubber just whatever access grout that we got on the tile when you use that and kind of buff it off okay yeah that'll take it right off the shiny tile right and a sponge and some water when the grout gets on stuff you don't want it and you want to wipe it away real quick you don't want it to set up all right okay then we've got caulk for the joint right against the countertop there just because it's flexible the grout will dry and crack oh I see so we don't don't put grout along any of those lines we were gonna use the caulk yes but you can also get I understand color matched caulk yes whatever whatever color the grout is you want to get the same kind of caulking it just looks better well next move I guess is to mix the granite right yeah let's go do that all right so Cory what's the secret to mixing grout you just want to use water you want to mix it slow try to keep the mess down dump the powder in there the grout mix it just a little bit maybe add a little bit more water as we go we don't want it too wet we want it kind of like peanut butter it's probably a good idea when it's ready Cory shows me his technique for installing the grout first he grabs a little bit of grout with this float and then smears the grout into the void spaces he works in all directions which makes sure that the grout completely fills all of the gaps and cracks now it's important to note that cleaning the excess grout off the tile is maybe the most important step in the process if the grout dries on to the tile surface it's almost impossible to completely remove and it can result in having to remove and install new tile if you're working by yourself work in small sections go back to beginning cleaning off the excess grout every 10 or 15 minutes now after giving the grout a few minutes to set up we work our way down the tile with a damp sponge in clean water you want to make sure not to remove the grout from the joints just clean the excess off the surface of the tile okay park gets a little tedious you'll need to change the water often since the dirty water will leave behind a grout haze on the tile and make sure the sponge isn't too wet if water is leaking out of the sponge as you work it's too wet after the grout is set up about an hour we come back through with a clean grout scrubber to wipe away any remaining haze [Music] well Sakura that scrubber really took the haze off the tile and it's beautiful looks good what's left to do I would just need to put the kaki in between the tile and the countertop just to kind of finish it off okay what about sealing the grout um it's not a big deal it's a personal preference if you want to see what it's not gonna hurt it okay these are pretty small grout lines so maybe not necessary right yeah let's get those joint sealed then [Music] all right well Cory this this looks great we appreciate your hard work and also all the great tips you gave us Thanks no problem okay we'll have you back next time when we have another tile project okay right see you then so installing a tile backsplash there's no problem and these basic tile skills will work for bigger projects too i'm jeff wilson thanks for joining me and come back often for more do it yourself projects on the at home channel and build the pd accom [Music]
