I remember just I went out to Amanda Malibu area I live in Southern California I just went out to this beach called Zuma Beach there's a little Starbucks across the street so I went to Starbucks got my little coffee grabbed the little muffin you know and went out to the beach watch the Sun Rise just sitting on my little towel there you know when I came before God because you're supposed to go to the beach to find yourself right and so I get there you know got my little coffee and I just like okay Lord Who am I what am I supposed to do on this earth and it was one of those times where I just believe God spoke to me and and I I took like bill I come from a very conservative background I graduated from the master seminary and John McArthur so don't tell him I said this I I heard God speak I just believe that as uh as I'm sitting there having my coffee eating my muffin just asking God what is my calling I felt like I'd hear God saying that's cute Francis look at you and your little blankie drinking your coffee eating your muffin meanwhile there are millions of people who are just hoping to live through the day every three seconds someone dies of hunger goes another one they will never have the luxury of sitting on a little you know towel and looking out at the ocean drinking a Starbucks eating a muffin and going what is the meaning of my life they're just hoping to live well God was saying what do what do you think I want you to do what do you think my heart is read that book what is that book say from the front to the end I'm a father to the father's I'm a defender of widows you want to show me some true religion care for the widow's the orphans take care of them man and I didn't just that that thought just hit me like what am I saying what is my calling the fact that right now that there are people there moms I was there northern Uganda man watching moms holding their baby just come in would anyone just give me something to eat and I remember just looking in their eyes going this is driving me crazy I will do something I will do something I promise you I will do something man I came back from Africa the first time and and I looked at my wife she what she didn't go with me I go I go honey I'm looking at my house I can't live here anymore this is an extravagant yeah sure this is just right no the road for senior I just can't live here anymore I read through second Corinthians that morning just you know by quote-unquote coincidence what are you going to call it but I'm reading it and and I get to that part where Paul says you know he tells the Corinthians I want you to give to these these these believers in Jerusalem who have nothing because I'm not asking that they become rich and you become poor he goes I'm just asking it there might be equality I thought equality it's look at me lease look at us we're sitting in this room where we're in a 2,000 square foot home and and there are kids overseas they're picking out of the trash I saw them and I fell in love with them I can't live here anymore and have a godly enough wife that she went out with me that day to look at mobile homes look at trailer parks and just say okay anything let's bridge the gap here let's let's just break this gap down see because I always thought okay well well well either I become a missionary and sell everything or I become a pastor in America and if I'm successful I can get more and more more and more and more I read the Word of God and go it doesn't matter how big your churches it doesn't matter how well-known you are God calls for equality God calls for us to care for the poor man I wasn't going to say any of this but Bill Hybels got me fired up about what bothers me what I can't stand I can't stand that the fact that I live so comfortably I mean still even now where we live it's like it's still so nice and what's what's the love of God what is the love of God you know the Bible says in first John chapter 3 verse 16 it says this is how we know what love is geez Christ laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers if anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him how can the love of God be in him he says what's the love of God what is the love of God what is God calling us how do we love people he says we get the example of Christ Christ lay down his life he had equality with God in heaven sitting on his throne millions of angels worshiping him but he didn't consider that equality something to be grasped but he humbles himself he lowers himself he becomes nothing he lays his life down takes the form of a servant he goes that's a love of God is for us now to lay our lives down and say you know what I don't need this let me let me humble myself let me show the love of Christ he says because if you've got material possessions and you see your brother in need he goes how can love God really be in you you can't really love God if you're living like that a lot of of Christ is a love that lays down I don't know why I mean whatever that stirs you do has nothing to do with my message it just after after listening a bill it just got me so fired up because that was the thing that I couldn't stand I can't stand seeing those people suffer I can't see that you know when 53 percent of the world lives on less than $2 a day 50 over half they think this is crazy what's going on in this room we forget that we are such the minority and we are so so rich and because of that richness so often we can become like the church in laodicea you know where the riches give us the sense of security like God's blessing is on upon us or something it feels safe upon that rather than realizing no God's blessed us so that we can bless others and I hope you have a church like that I hope you have a heart like that if we as leaders don't have that and God help our churches sometimes I think that's my whole reason for existing is to remind cuz I live in Simi Valley which is pretty wealthy neighborhood safest large city in America you know and I just go god why in the world am I here why in the world would you put me here this doesn't fit me I belong in the inner city I belong overseas why am I here and I think it's to live differently it's to be a light in a very dark place you know it's just that most people don't think of affluent areas as dark places but the Bible says those are the people man it's gonna be so hard for them to enter the kingdom of God you know it's gonna be easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person in the kingdom of God but I love those people I absolutely love them I love my church
