HOW TO FIND JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT!

so in the old testament we see god parting the red sea we see the 10 plagues of egypt and we see god doing all sorts of supernatural miracles but where was jesus in the old testament what was he up to what was he doing all those thousands of years so in this video we're gonna talk about how we can see jesus in the old testament that's coming up today on the beat hey my friend welcome back to the the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god and so if we are confused for any reason about who john is referring to in terms of who this word is if we read a little bit further in john chapter 1 verse 14 he makes it very clear that the word of god is indeed jesus christ it says here and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory the glory as of the only begotten of the father full of grace and truth so from this verse and many other verses in the new testament we are able to deduce that jesus was not just some created being we understand that jesus didn't simply come on the scene whenever he was born of a virgin but rather he existed all the way back with the father through eternity past and so the question is how do we see jesus in the old testament what was he doing what was he up to and why is it that we start to really see him in the new testament well i'm gonna break this down into three primary ways that we can see jesus in the old testament and obviously there's some more but uh first we're gonna start with the old testament prophecy now we can see jesus in the old testament because there are statements and prophecies made about jesus christ in the old testament that jesus was the direct fulfillment of in the new testament for instance isaiah chapter 7 verse 14 says that he will be born of a virgin and then of course in the new testament jesus was the fulfillment of that and then micah chapter 5 verse 2 it says that this messiah is going to be born in the city of bethlehem and of course we know that jesus fulfilled that as well and then if you read isaiah 53 you will see that isaiah predicted and prophesied the exact type of death that the messiah would experience hundreds of years before he was even born to this earth and yet we see that jesus fulfilled that as well and then there are other prophecies that describe the character or the nature of this messiah one of which is isaiah chapter 9 verse 6 which says for unto us a child is born unto us a son is given and the government will be upon his shoulder speaking of his ruling and his rulership and his name will be called wonderful counselor mighty god everlasting father prince of peace so prophecy is the first way that we can see a glimpse or a clear picture of jesus christ in the old testament now the second way is an exciting way and that is called a type or typology and basically what this is is these are foreshadowings or glimpses or images of jesus christ that are not clearly spoken and says okay this is jesus but as you look back from the new testament and you can look back into the old testament you can see okay this event or this situation or this person in the old testament was a foreshadowing or a picture or was giving us a glimpse of who jesus actually was going to become now there are so many of them so i'm going to go through several of them that i want you to study on your own the first is adam and just as adam was the representative for all mankind and the bible says that when adam sinned all of humanity was guilty because of what adam did even though we were not in the garden and sinned with him in the same way romans chapter 5 verse 12 says that jesus is the representative of the entire human race and even though we did not fulfill the law perfectly and even though we did not die on the cross for our own sins jesus was the representative for all of those who would believe so adam was also a type if you will of christ another type that we see very early on in the old testament is in genesis chapter 3 verse 21 where when adam and eve sinned and they were banished from the garden god created a covering for them using the skins of an animal well in the same way we were guilty of sinning against god and instead of us being punished for our sins in the same way that adam and eve should have died for their sins god provided a sacrifice in jesus christ so this was also another foreshadowing or a type of jesus that we see early on continuing on in the old testament the whole entire levitical system in terms of offering sacrifices for our sins and there need to be other the necessity for there to be blood in order to be shed so that there would be forgiveness or the remission of sins all of that which i don't have time to go into was merely a picture or a foreshadowing of the work and person of jesus christ as a matter of fact in the book of hebrews it says that the blood of bulls and goats are no longer sufficient in order to cover our sins which is why jesus had to come to be the ultimate sacrifice and the ultimate fulfillment of our sins moving on further there is a guy in the book of genesis his name is melchizedek and his name means king of justice or king of righteousness which is once again who jesus is but not only that this man melchizedek was the king of a town called salem which comes from the hebrew word shalom which is peace so not only was melchizedek the king of justice or righteousness but he was also the king of peace but not only that this guy was also a priest so that means that he was interceding to god on behalf of the people do you see the connection melchizedek was the king of righteousness the king of peace and he was a priest in the same way jesus christ is the king of righteousness he is the king of the prince of peace and he is the high priest that ever lives to make intercession for you and i as he is sitting at the right hand of the father this very minute but it goes on when the people were in the wilderness and they were crying out for something to eat but they didn't quite know what they wanted god rained down manna from heaven so that they could be uh fed in in the midst of their wilderness jesus comes along later on and says hey i'm not the man i am the bread of life that you have been craving for and you didn't even know it water from the rock in the old testament they were thirsting for something and then later on jesus says hey i am this living water he who drinks of me will never thirst again so you see all of these pictures i could go on another one is the old testament tabernacle every single thing in that tabernacle is a foreshadowing or a type of jesus christ the fact that they had to bring animals the fact that there was one way into the tabernacle and once you go through all of these different steps which i'm going to do a series on you could get to the holy of holies where god's presence dwelt in the same way jesus said in the new testament i am the way the truth and the life and no one can get to the father hence the holy of holies except through me there are types of jesus christ sprinkled all throughout the old testament you just have to see them it may not have his name clearly spelled on it it may not say hey this is jesus but these are all foreshadowings of the person and the work of christ and the third way that we see jesus in the old testament are what's called the appearances of christ or some theologians call these as christophanies right so these are appearances where jesus seems to step on the scene in the old testament but his name is not mentioned and scholars are split in terms of whether this really is jesus christ or could it just simply be an angel of god but basically every time you see the phrase the angel of the lord in the old testament if you read through the old testament you will see that phrase again and again and again the angel of the lord many scholars believe these are old testament appearances or christophanies of jesus christ before he was born so this is the pre-incarnate if you will picture of christ so one very quick one would be genesis chapter one where god says let us make man in our image who is he talking to he's obviously talking to the other members of the trinity so we see jesus on the scene in genesis chapter one and then we see the angel of the lord doing several things that normal angels typically don't do first of all in genesis chapter 16 and also in genesis chapter 21 we see that the angel of the lord was comforting a lady named hagar so we see the angel of the lord which is a specific title that is not given to any of the other angels now once again you may say well i thought jesus wasn't an angel remember the word angel simply means messenger right a messenger from god which we know jesus indeed was but not only that in exodus chapter 3 in the picture of the burning bush many theologians believe that this was a old testament appearance of jesus christ providing revelation to moses so we see not only does the angel of the lord and the old testament provide comfort but he also provides revelation as well in numbers chapter 22 we see the angel of the lord again warning balaam of incoming danger and then in judges chapter 6 we see the angel of the lord accepting worship which is something that a normal angel would never do so my friend this is by no means an exhaustive study on the old testament appearances or how to view jesus in the old testament but hopefully it will get you started in terms of studying these things so that you can see that jesus didn't just pop on the scene whenever he was born in the new testament jesus was at work from eternity pass and he will continue to be present at work until eternity future so if you found this video
