looking for ways to extend the range of the Lutron caseta Smart Hub let's check out a couple of options one obvious and the other not so much today hi this is David at tech for Baba welcome to my channel [Music] in today's video I'll go over a couple of ways to extend the range of the Lutron caseta Smart Hub Lutron smart switches are the most reliable smart switches I've used so far thanks to the use of the Smart Hub and its proprietary protocol called clear connect the protocol goes over a 434 megahertz radio frequency this frequency is much lower than the 2.4 and 5 gigahertz commonly used Wi-Fi frequencies so Lutron smart switches have longer range and less interference than other smart switches on the market the range of the Lutron Hub is 30 feet which means all the devices must be located within a 30 feet radius of the Smart Hub if you're blessed to have a bigger house thank God and there are two ways to extend that 30 fee range an obvious option is using this smart repeater the second option not as obvious is with this lamp dimmer let's go over the Smart Hub repeater first it looks just like the Smart Hub they have the same square boxy shape white color and the exact same size in all dimensions in fact the only difference from the outside is on the back of the repeater there is not an ethernet port like the Smart Hub there's still the add button and the Power Jack and the repeater comes with the same power adapter as this diagram from Lutron shows the repeater can be placed up to 60 feet away from the Smart Hub it covers a 30 feet radius radio frequency range just like the Smart Hub or smart Bridge the device can now be placed in this new 30 feet radius range the repeater enables in this particular configuration a smart device can be placed at the furthest Edge away from the Smart Hub in this extended coverage Circle and be up to 90 feet away from the Smart Hub only one repeater can be used in a Lutron cassetta system though now the second way to extend the range less obvious than using a repeater is with this lamb dimmer the Lutron smart dimmer can come in a kit like this one with the Pico remote it comes in a nice familiar Lutron package printed with good information in this case there's even a flap held down by a magnet with a nice display of the dimmer and the pickle remote underneath Inside the Box there's a smart lamp dimmer of course and the Pico remote and a manual that's it the smart lamp dimmer looks kind of like a caseta smart wall switch but thicker it's a bit over three inches long by two and a quarter inch wide and about one and a quarter inch thick there's a two-prong wall plug on the back and two two prong plugs for two lamps one on each side the two plugs are controlled together now individually it's very easy to use just plug the smart lamp dimmer in and plug in one of the lamps the physical controls are on the front there are four buttons on off brighter and darker the lamb dimmer can be added to the Lutron app just like any Lutron smart switches so the lamp can be controlled and programmed wirelessly and by a voice assistant press and hold off button for about 10 seconds until the little LED blinks quickly pick the room the lamp is in say office in this case hit next desk lamp next the app then adds the device turns it off and back on that's it once it finishes setting up the dimmer will be listed under office as a desk lamp it can now be controlled with the app off on with the slider what's special is this land dimmer can also extend the radio frequency range by 30 feet it needs to be placed within 30 feet of the Smart Hub whereas the repeater can be placed 60 feet away while multiple lamp dimmers can be used in a system only the first lamp dimmer added to the system will automatically become a range extender so only one lamp dimmer can act as a range extender in a cassetta system too bad we can use multiple repeaters or multiple lamb dimmers as range extenders if even more range is needed one repeater and one lamb dimmer can be used together in a system like what's shown in this configuration in this configuration a device can be placed up to 120 feet away from the Smart Hub at the furthest edge of the Lem dimmer's coverage area the Smart Hub repeater retails for 74.95 US Dollars and the Lem dimmer retails for 44.95 this land dimmer and pickle remote kit costs only five dollars more at 49.95 the Lutron caseta wireless system is not cheap but it is the most reliable Smart Switch system I've tried if you're starting out getting one of the starter kits offer a better deal like this one here that comes with two smart switches two Pico remotes with stands and a smart hub for 194.95 that's about 70 dollar savings compared to getting each item separately if you're interested in more details on these little twin smart switches and how to install them check out more Lutron related videos I'll link in the description below what do you think about these Lutron smart switches or other smart switches are they over price or even necessary for your home let me know in the comment section below thanks for watching if you find any part of this video helpful please give it a thumbs up and share this video with your friends if you want to see more videos on how technology can enhance our life with kids and family subscribe to the channel and check out this video next I'll see you in the next one until then remember to cherish each moment [Music] thank you [Music]
