unless you happen to be the daughter of Liam Neeson's character and taken it's safe to say most of us will never be whisked away by thugs in a van and held for ransom but just in case you ever decided to take candy from the wrong stranger today we're going to do your mom a favor and tell you how to escape a kidnapper this is epic out - epic how to kidnapping continues to be one of the most common crimes in the United States but there's some good news first of all most domestic kidnappings are cases of a parent taking off with his or her own child second some studies show that as many as 60% of kidnapping victims are eventually released unharmed so if you calm down and play your cards right you having decent chance of making it out alive but let's take you through your kidnapping from start to finish shall we picture this you're taking a shortcut through a nice little deserted alley one night whistling and minding your own business when suddenly you bang the shady character in a ski mask clamps his hand over your mouth and starts pulling you toward his car now what well that depends on several different factors that you need to take into account and quickly first question you need to ask yourself is why am I being kidnapped if you're associated with wealthy people chances are you're being held for ransom in cases like this you're worth more to your captors alive than dead which bodes well for your chances of survival let's say you're taken by a terrorist organization or you're a political figure or a foreign journalist there's a chance you're going to be used as a bartering tool for the release of other prisoners but it's just as likely you're going to be killed simply to send a message in this case you're going to need to take more risks when fighting back against your assailants even if there are several of them where they're brandishing weapons because frankly this might be your only chance to save yourself it's important to note that the most dangerous periods in a kidnapping are the initial capture and the rescue so use your gut instinct to weigh the risks and be strategic about how you choose to respond in any case step one is the same no matter what raise some hell scream at the top of your lungs you want to do everything you possibly can to draw attention to yourself so that someone nearby will notice and alert the authorities otherwise it may be days until you're even reported missing now while your first instinct will probably be to yell help remember that people are more likely to come to your aid if you yell out fire sometimes just drawing attention to yourself is enough to spook your attacker and send him running in the other direction step 2 fight back kick bite scratch punch do everything in your power to get away you're going to be scared but statistics show that it's always better to struggle possible get low to the ground and curl up so that it's harder for your captor to drag you into a vehicle because once you're in that vehicle chances of survival go down you managed to break free and run away be sure to run in the opposite direction your captors car is facing so that he will have to turn around and pursue you but let's say you've given it your all and your kidnapper gets you into a vehicle anyway now we're on to step 3 find a way out of the car if you're thrown into the trunk you have a couple of options first look for an emergency lever or button inside the trunk that will open it from the inside many newer car models have this feature and your kidnapper may not know it if there's no way to open the trunk from the inside your best bet is to look for a panel covering the back of the brake light and pull it back so you can punch through it and signal for help but let's say you're actually inside the vehicle with your kidnapper that's a knife if at all possible try to jam a foreign object into the car's ignition so that your captor can't start the car obviously if your hands are free and you're in a public place with lots of people around open the car door and roll out it's worth the risk of getting hurt to get away but let's say there's no way out of the car that's when you move on to step 4 take mental notes try to discern as much information as possible about your location including landmarks street scenes and natural features of the landscape if you're blindfolded you can listen for sounds that might provide clues as to your location like construction noise for example also pay attention to when your weight shifts to try and keep track of when and in which direction your captor is turning the car count the seconds between each turn and if you know the area you're in try to envision a map in your head of where you might be another thing you should do if you can't escape the car is step 5 play Hansel and Gretel try to leave Clues along the way that might help authorities identify your location like a piece of jewelry or a button from your shirt once your captor is transported you to the location he'll be detaining you in start working on step 6 on the jar it might sound ridiculous but you're gonna need to try to build a rapport with your kidnapper while you're obviously going to be scared and angry don't do anything to provoke or antagonize your captor you want to stay calm and try to engage your captor in non-threatening conversation your goal here is to make him view you as a human being it's gonna be harder for your kidnapper to kill you off if you know his favorite color and his childhood memories but beware of developing Stockholm Syndrome a psychological disorder where and the kidnapped person grows emotionally attached to their kidnapper often to the point of actually assists them in their agenda no matter how desperate you get for human connection remember this person is a criminal not your BFF step 7 keep your wits about you many kidnapping victims are detained alone in small spaces for long periods of time which can drive a person really crazy really quick you need to concentrate on maintaining your sanity this means exercising regularly finding a way to keep track of time developing some sort of daily routine and making up games or tasks to keep you busy and even though this might seem crazy it may be comforting to have imaginary conversations with loved ones out loud or in your head or make up an imaginary friend like Wilson from castaway even a trusty cockroach would do like in wall-e also a good movie above all try to stay positive and never give up hope just think of what a crazy story you're gonna have once this is all over and you've been rescued a book deal anyone but that doesn't mean you should just sit there day dreaming about daytime talk show appearances you should move on to step 8 plan your escape try to learn as much as possible about the habits and schedule of your captors so you can make a run for it if the opportunity presents itself listen for people talking doors opening and closing or cars coming and going but let's say you're in a situation where your only real choice is to stay put and wait it out if you're eventually rescued move on to step 9 get down and stay down remember the two most dangerous points in a kidnapping are the initial capture and the rescue when the authorities bust in they may not know who the actual kidnappers are and initially everyone will be a suspect including you shots may be fired and your kidnapper may try to use you as a human shield so hit the floor put your hands over your head where the cops can see them and wait to be saved
