in today's video i'm going to show you how proxy files can speed up your workflow in premiere pro [Applause] in fact let me use this very clip as an example to showcase how much faster proxies can be as i move the playhead on the timeline look at how choppy it is in updating the program monitor compare that to when i turn my proxies on and move the playhead i get immediate feedback from the playhead on the timeline so much smoother think of proxies as stand in low resolution files for your high resolution raw media and since these proxies are so small and normally made with a great editing codec it makes the processing of these files so much easier and faster for your computer when you're using them within premiere pro and the great thing is proxies are just for editing when you go to export your video premiere pro is going to refer back to that high resolution raw media so i'm going to break this video into three parts because depending on your situation your proxy workflow may differ the first part of the video i'm gonna show you how to create proxies within premiere pro that being said there is a much faster workflow and that's if you have the capability of recording proxies simultaneously in your camera while you're recording your raw media which a lot of recent cameras are putting this into their hardware so in the second part of this video i'm going to show you how to attach your proxies within premiere pro and then the third part of this video is a little bit more specific and we'll show you how to create proxies for high frame rate footage such as 120 frames per second so if we want to create proxies in premiere pro highlight all of the footage over here in our project bin right click go to proxy create proxies within this create proxies window we're going to switch it from h.264 to quicktime for the preset personally i like using the prores low resolution proxy and this is mainly just because whenever i'm working with another client or within another production studio and they're working with an editing codec they normally ask for prores but for this task seem form low resolution proxy is just as good just from personal experience i'm going to stick with prores low resolution proxy next in line is the destination i'm going to stick with next to original media and hit ok what this does is send all of your video files to adobe media encoder and starts to make proxies out of them while you're still using premiere pro so the great thing about this is you can create proxies while you're editing it will be a little bit more taxing on your computer but you can still use premiere pro while making proxies so my proxies are finished and inside premiere pro in order to start using them we have to toggle them on the easiest way to do this is to add your toggle proxies button right here in the program monitor so we're going to go over here to the button editor click that and this is the icon for toggling proxies bring this down onto the button menu and hit okay here is how scrolling is before toggling proxies on as you can see it doesn't even update my computer there it finally did that was a great uh pause screen and now if i toggle my proxies on watch this what it's so cool how fast you can edit with proxies if you're using something like a laptop like me creating proxies will help your work flow out so much more another suggestion is when you get to the process of color correcting and color grading i wouldn't use proxies to do this because it is a very low resolution file when you get to that process you should probably toggle your proxies off and color correct and color grade to the raw media now that's creating proxies within premiere pro but this process can be so much faster if you have the capability to record proxies simultaneously while you're recording your normal media on your camera for example my sony a7s iii can do this i can record low resolution proxies while i record my 4k footage inside the sd card right here under private m4 root this is the raw media but if you recorded internal proxies simultaneously on the a7 s3 those proxies are right here underneath this sub folder these were the proxies that i created before with media encoder i'm going to delete these and now i'm going to drag these proxies into my little proxies folder from the subfolder so now instead of creating our own proxies inside premiere pro i'm going to highlight all of that footage and go to proxy attach proxies and now let me show you what may happen if you go to attach and we're going to attach this first one the 5 30 i hit attach and it's automatically found the proxies folder because we were already working in this if you don't have that up you'll just have to find it over here within your finder if i click on this very first one the 530 and hit ok it won't automatically attach all of the rest of these because inside the file names it doesn't go underscore proxy it has this s03 in the way that you import proxies like this so it automatically does all of them instead of doing file name what we want to do is by media start so i'm going to click this one and watch what happens let me hit attach i'll click 531 click that and hit ok and automatically it has now attached every single proxy to these files and just to prove that to you let me bring them back down here on the timeline as you can see there's no proxies on but when we do toggle proxies on here's that smooth scrolling and playback another way to tell that your proxies are attached to the file is to go over here and zoom in here you can see with the proxies on there's a lot of pixelation in fact look right there and then when i turn them off you can see that it gets much crisper now this third technique is geared to specific situations when you're dealing with high frame rates so please if you can use the first two techniques that i showed you those are much simpler than what i'm about to show you with this third way so to explain the problem here i have 120 frames per second footage that's 4k with technique number one that i showed you that would be exporting proxies inside premiere pro using either apple prores or scene form well the issue with that is if i go to apple prores you'll notice over here inside the frame rate that it will only allow you to go up to 60 frames per second the same thing goes for if i were to switch this over to gopro scene form i go to frame rate and it has a max of 60 frames per second if i were to try and use technique number two of internally recording proxies well currently on the sony a7s3 you can't record proxies while you're doing 120 frames per second what we need to do is find a codec that will allow us to export it from premiere or adobe media encoder at 120 frames per second and it turns out that kodak is h.265 so if i go up here to h.265 and then i scroll to frame rate we can actually go up to a max of 300 frames per second now this is if i were exporting a any kind of video what we need to do is create encoding and ingesting settings so when you go over here to your project bin and highlight them all i'll go to file proxy create proxies and under format i'm going to show you how to get an h.265 option and just a quick note if you want to download the ingest setting that i'm going to show you how to do uh i'll put it in the description below all you would need to do is download it and then hit add ingest preset and then find wherever you downloaded it um click it and then that will bring it up right here so you will have that available to you but let me show you how to do it we're going to go to media encoder and right here on the plus sign we're going to create a encoding preset i'm going to name my preset and underneath format i'm going to go to h.265 the one that starts with hevc the main thing that i want to change is right here underneath basic video settings and it will be the height of the video so we still want to make a small video size and whatever you have here for the height i'm just going to type in 720 make sure that these are linked so the aspect ratio stays 16 by 9. if you were creating this for vertical video all you would need to do is flip-flop these so it'd be 720 over 1280 but we're gonna stick with horizontal for now so 1280 by 720 i'm gonna scroll down and i'm gonna change the target bit rate from something like seven to four because i want the overall file size of these proxies to be even smaller now this will come at the price of having a lower visual quality proxy but again these are proxies and i'm not worried about the visual quality i just want low file sizes that can play back fast within premiere pro so with all of that set i'm going to hit ok now that we've created our encode preset we need to go back up to this plus sign and create our ingest preset so i'm going to click create ingest and i will name this preset and then go down to transcode files to destination we do need to pick a destination doesn't matter where because when we're in premiere pro that's where you'll set the destination then we'll go to format and h.265 automatically it has chosen the encode 720p h.265 horizontal preset that we just created i want to make sure that i click that and hit ok at this point this preset is somewhere on your computer but in order to make it a lot easier for you to find where this preset is so you can import it into premiere let's export it from midi encoder so i'm going to right click go to export preset and i'll just save it right here on my computer so back inside premiere pro let me get all of my high frame rate footage right click go to proxy create proxies and now in this window we're going to hit add ingest preset find wherever you put that preset on your computer open it and voila there is my h.265 ingest preset that i just created i hit ok it will send this over to media encoder and as you can see it's 720p 120 frames per second after those are exported here's my timeline of 120 frames per second footage as you can see if i move around my playhead it takes forever for it to update in fact there that's how long it took and when i turned on the proxies now we have much quicker scroll and playback the big question here though is if i were to slow this down since it's mainly meant for slow-mo what will that look like so let me right-click go to speed duration slow this down to 20 and if i click through you can see that each frame is represented just like if i were to go through here and click through when i have my proxies off you can see that each frame changes if i turn my proxies back on i hit play we do have that slow motion playback at 20 now again this is another advanced thing for those of you that do interpreting workflow for slow motion so if i interpret this footage to 24 frames per second bring it on to the timeline it won't work um it'll only play back up until this little section right here and it will be frozen for the rest of the clip so you don't want to interpret the footage what you do want to do is just right click your footage go to speed and duration and then just slow it down to for me it'll be 20 and boop now you have that same kind of workflow where the footage is already in slow motion on your timeline and it will still work as you can see here with my proxies on if this video was helpful don't forget to leave me a thumbs up and if you need to know how to sync audio within premiere pro i put together all the tips that i've learned over my career that videos right here until next time my name is javier mercedes and i hope you are out there living a life of abundance bye how proxies can speed up your workflow in premiere pro premiere pro in premiere pro let's get right into it
