[Music] hello everyone i'm nina and in this video i'll show you probably the best methods of drawing the head from any angle and it's called loomis method andrew loomis who wrote this book it's called drawing the head and hands is one of mine and my husband's favorite art teachers and in this video i'll show you what i've learned after reading this book so let's start [Music] andrew loomis wrote this book in the last century but it's still a must-have for artists drawing portraits most of the artists use the 2d grid methods to nail the shape but when practicing the loomis method you will literally be able to turn people's heads we need to start with a basic shape that can look as close as possible like a skull so when we see a cranium we can easily say that it looks like a bowl but this ball is flattened at the sides therefore you have to cut off the sides of the basic shape i will use some clay that shaped as a ball to demonstrate to you now i just chopped off a fairly thin slice of this ball from both sides as you can see it now translates from 2d to 3d from any angle when i'm holding the ball with the cut sides next to the head angles you can see how it works now we are going to draw three heads from three different angles front view three-fourth and side view let's start from the three-fourth view just because it's a lot easier to understand and explain with this example as i said the cranium is more like a ball than anything else so no matter what angle you are going to draw you always start with drawing a circle the next step is to chop off thin slices from both sides one of the advice mr loomis gives us in this book is be able to draw the unseen parts and i must say that keeping this advice in mind helps a lot when drawing [Music] the next step is called the all important cross why is it called like this because this cross shows us what direction the head is looking at also all the measurements spring from this point so i'm going to continue those lines taking into account that i'm actually drawing on a ball so my lines are curved this all-important cross becomes the brow line and the bridge of the nose the top point of the oval defines where the hairline is dropping down an equal distance below the cross we get the point where the nose will be dropping the same distance down we get the bottom of the chin thanks to the all-important cross we know where the center of the face is so it's time to define it too like this and i'll finish with the ear and the neck the vertical line will help us to draw the jawline the width of this oval depends on the direction the head is looking at i must say it's unexpectedly easy to define this width so don't be afraid of the perspective and i'm sure in a few sketches you'll feel how it's supposed to be the ear is located on the bottom right part of the oval [Music] and that's it i've just drawn the head i know where the nose is i know where the eyebrows are therefore i know where the eyes are and now i'm going to give my head some simple features i have a lot of tutorials about different parts of the face so i'm not going to comment anything here if you want to refresh something or learn something new you know where to go and what to search for [Music] [Music] [Music] let's move to the front view i'm starting to draw a circle chopping off two fairly thin slices because you still can see them from the front drawing the all-important cross and establishing the direction the head is looking at then i'm defining the hairline dropping down an equal distance and defining the nose location dropping the same distance again and finding out where the chin is i'm also going to give it some simple features like in the previous sketch and let's move to the side view [Music] and while you're watching me join i want to remind you about two things number one i have an insta profile and i'm really hoping to see you there at least check it out and number two i have the coolest really the coolest facebook group where people give each other feedback it's a private group and you're very welcome to join if you are 13 years old at least if you speak english and if you behave yourself side view is my favorite view because it's always the simplest one i'm starting with drawing a cranium ball again yeah nothing new here guys a cranium ball when we slice off the side plane it looks like one more circle and it's logical because it's the side view i took a picture where i'm on purpose looking a tiny bit up just for some variation the all-important cross tells us the direction i'm looking thank you the all-important cross you're doing so good thank you the top and bottom of the slice part tells us where the hairline and the nose are dropping down the same distance will help us to define the chin notice that i'm drawing everything at the same angle now adding the jawline and the facial plane [Music] and as usual i'm finishing the sketch with giving myself some facial features [Music] [Music] next up let's practice more and draw the head again using the same methods but from different angles this is where you get your first 3d challenge instead of translating a 2d picture using the creep method you can now start to observe the 3d shape of the human's head using anatomically correct guidelines isn't that awesome i created this template in advance and i'm recommending you to do the same now using all the information i told you a few minutes before i'm going to practice drawing heads from all the possible angles and i might even call it a live hack repeat drawing this a million times and in a very short period of time you'll be able to do it fast and correct [Music] this is the end of my tutorial on the loomis head method of course i didn't replace the book but i did tell you all the basics and if you're interested in continuing learning this methods you know what to do please leave a like and comment this video if you enjoyed watching it it really helps my channel and thank you for watching see you soon guys [Music] bye you
